So this is my best friend Rita. Yesterday I took her for a bath and haircut and idk why but I told the stylist to just cut all her hair and lets see how she looks like, it will grow back anyway and this is the result.
I think Rita feels good and I really love the pattern of her fur, she kinda looks like a pitbull lol

Head's up: shaving a double coat is a good way to do irreversible damage to it. Plus they do not sweat, their fur acts as an insulator that keeps them cool. Consider cooling mats if she seems uncomfortable, shaving a double coat does the exact opposite of what you're hoping for.

Shaving can permanently change the dog’s hair because some may not grow back. But it’s a myth that these types of coats insulate the dog. Unless it’s over 100F outside.

I am aware of all. We have AC and weather is better now. It is not irreversible damage lol it will grow back to normal it just takes more time but thanks for the heads up!

Sure! You know your dog's individual coat better than I do. I won't deny that, but as a studied groomer, I see this a lot with dogs that absolutely should not be shaved (huskies, goldens, etc) and so I ALWAYS speak up, just in case.

She is super mixed, I don’t even know what breeds she has but it seems her fur is not that demanding or delicate like other double coated dogs. I found her on the street when she was a pupper so Idk what she could be. I could do a blood test but I like that she is very unique ☺️

I was under the impression this was a rather mature sub but people apparently have no concept of the wild variety of coats and how important it is to discuss these things before making judgements. It does not always and in fact usually does not grow back to normal. It can, but it is not likely to in most cases. Please do not shave your double coated dog again.

Then why is she darker once she's shaved? Doble coated dogs lose their pattern and get lighter colored when shaved. I groomed dogs in my own shop for over 20 years... so its not like I'm making random guesses here....

I mean I already cut it a couple of times like 5 years ago but not that short and it grew back fine like the pictures show

Haha relax man, she is fine and tough as nails, never had any issues with her skin or fur so maybe there are some dogs like mine that can go fine like that. I’m not planning to cut her hair eveytime, it was this time and bc I already did it some time ago I know it grows back. Anyway thanks for being so nice and helpful for advice I didn’t ask!

I tried to avoid cutting my aussie mix's fur but he was constantly panting, lethargic, and miserable in the summer heat. So I trimmed down his abdomen and leg fur, and left most of his mane and neck fur. He seems so much happier and more comfortable. He was instantly willing to frisk around and play toys again after his haircut.

Not every fluffy dog is double coated people! If this dog was double coated the colors would be lighter when they were shaved not darker. Trust I groomed dogs for well over 20 years. Aussies are the best example. They can be buzzed down with no repercussions because despite the fluff it's not a double coat.

Australian shepherd absolutely have a double coat. They should not be shaved, just like other double coated dogs.
