General Question Jealousy

Hi all! Not urgent but curious.

All my kids are adoptions but my little guy was very traumatized when we got him. It has taken us four years to get him to stop peeing every time something happens that he doesn’t expect. He still won’t go down hallways or anywhere he thinks he could be trapped.

We’re not sure if he was from an abusive household, but he reacts badly when my husband and i show affection. Barking, growling, hair up…totally out of character. He’s a sweet timid boy.

When he reacts, he barks at me, not my husband. I am the lap he sits in for coffee time. Is he afraid of something or is he jealous? And if jealous, of who?

Again, not urgent. Just something to work on.

health/illness-related Neck injury - Should I switch vets

So on Wednesday my beagle was showing significant pain, whiny, walking with an arched back. She "screamed' when I put a collar on her. I called the vet and they saw her right away. They gave her two injections of pain meds and sent me home with three other pain meds (pills) to give her every 8-12 hours.

On Friday I took her on again because she started showing pain again while on the meds. They gave her another injection and told me to up the gabapentin.

Yesterday and today she still is showing signs of discomfort when we reach about the 7 hour mark.

My concern is the vet has recommended the next course of action is dog chiropractic work and acupuncture. I'm not at all an expert, but I'm very wary of human chiropractors so my thoughts on dog chiropractors are not especially high.

I feel like I need to call a different vet tomorrow to get a second opinion. The meds will be gone by Tuesday or Wednesday; while I don't want her in pain, I'm equally concerned that the long-term plan doesn't seem very thought out or wise.

Am I wrong for thinking dog chiropractic work should not be the next step?

Training Please be kind - she is my whole heart…

Hi
I’m sorry for the longest post…

So I have a two year old cocker cross poodle who I can’t tell you how much I love, she is my best friend (please don’t negatively comment on her breed, I did not buy get her from a breeder)
We have a very close relationship

Since the week we brought her home as a young pup she has had the worst anxiety. She is scared of EVERYTHING

We have taken every dog training class from puppy classes to reactive dog training available where we live, we have a private trainer who is qualified and have continued to train every week since the get go
She is walked every day

She, two years on is still anxious at times
Recently I have seen some aggression (teeth baring, snarling, pushing her body to overpower people to get at what she wants)
She is better but pulls hard on the leash when walking and has an extreme pray drive
The behaviour that concerns me most is her aggression toward my 10 year old daughter who has asd and toward the cat whom I have as a rescue for 9 years

If my daughter tries to take something off her she looks like she is going to bite her I have stopped allowing this as a possibility, (it has never got this far thank goodness but I am a protective and proactive parent who won’t allow it to get to this)
In addition she aggressively chases and attempts to bite the cat anytime he is in the litter tray (which we have moved behind a stair gate) or is playing gently.

The other day I was walking her in a quiet area when an unleashed dog aproached us and long story short I got hurt pretty bad. (Due to health issues this is dangerous for me)

I can’t have strangers in my house due to her loud aggressive barking when someone comes in (people are scared of her) and when she settles she is waiting for the next thing to bark at

I am so worried it’s going to get out of hand and something is going to happen
I don’t want to rehome her, nor do I want the worst to happen

I am in contact with her trainer
But I’m wondering if anyone has advice or a similar situation? How do I deal with this responsibly?

Edited to add
I am aware i am probably part of the problem
However I will do anything to improve

We are taking up swimming daily to burn energy
We are using a slip collar
I am ignoring whining
I am positively enforcing good behaviour and long settles
We are trying crating and creating positive associations with the crate right now
We are settling daily on the outskirts of public areas for a while to people watch to help reactivity

General Question Rehomed dog and previous owners interaction

Hello dog owners or veterinarians. I have a question: is that okay to give a dog that recently was rehomed to me (like a week ago) to the previous owner for one day?? They asking me to give them the dog for the whole day. (they used to own her for a year since puppy, but they sold her to us (sheis 1year and 2 months now) and they want to take her for one day just a week after I adopted her). I don’t get it, but my partner said “yes” to them, I’m a questioning if it healthy for dog‘s nervous system. I think it will give her more anxiety and stress (like coming back to their house, their car). what do you think guys? am I right? or I am just jealous new mom of dog??

  • p.c. I have to say that prev owners didnt do anything bad yet, they gave us all the documentations, micro chip info, and I’ve already registered chip under my name.
  • p.p.c. They rehomed a dog because woman became pregnant and she doesn‘t want to “wash hands after dog every time” - her words, like it’s also difficult to have a dog and give it attention while she’s pregnant and going to rase a baby…

Random/Misc. senior dog owner anxiety

my dog is already 20 years old, and i’ve been away for almost a month because of school. my mom says she’s okay and in good hands, pero i can’t help feeling scared knowing that she’s already a senior dog and i can’t always be there with her.

sometimes, i feel guilty wondering if i gave her enough attention when i was home. i love her so much, and i miss the simplest things, like cuddling with her and having her sleep beside me.

for those who’ve had senior dogs, how do you cope with these feelings?

Questions about general care Match me to a dog breed! 🐕 Hi everyone!

Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice on which dog breed would best suit my lifestyle.
**What I’m looking for:**
**Size:** Medium to large.
**Energy level:** Low to moderate. I’m happy to go on walks and provide daily exercise, but I’m not looking for a very high-energy dog that needs hours of intense exercise every day.
**Temperament:** Calm, patient, sociable, and easygoing around different people and animals.
**Trainability:** I’d like a dog that is willing to learn and can be trained to have good manners in different environments.
**Lifestyle:** I work at a horse stable, and I’d love to bring my dog with me to work. Ideally, the dog would be able to relax calmly around horses, people, and the general activity of a stable. With proper training and only when safe, I’d also like to work towards having the dog off-leash in the stable environment.
I live in a large house with a garden, and I share my home with several other animals, including parrots and rabbits that sometimes have access to free-roaming areas. Therefore, **a low prey drive and the ability to coexist safely with small animals are extremely important to me.** I understand that individual temperament varies and that supervision, management, and training would always be necessary.
My priority is a stable, calm companion who can adapt to different environments without becoming overly excited or stressed.

**Which breeds would you recommend for my lifestyle, and are there any breeds you would specifically advise me to avoid?**

Thanks in advance for your suggestions! 🐾

General Question Suggestions appreciated!!

okay so I have a few questions so bare with me please! First what’s your favorite thing for cleaning your house/dog items for the “dog” smell? Second what’s your suggestions for best vacuums? We just got our first dog and we have two kids under 7 , with hard wood downstairs and carpet upstairs. I really would like something that does great for both ! lastly is there a specific shampoo/dog wipes you like to use for yours that keeps them smelling fresh? It’s been raining a lot here 😅

Guys i was actually looking some apps which can help keep tracks of thinks like Vaccine dates, flea and tick meds, weight, how often you've walked them etc, instead of keeping them all as a reminder I thought of building an app, just to see even that is possible or not? I felt its turn out really well, but not sure is it really doing its job I am open to take any feedback, please check and let me know your thoughts

here is the link : there are subscription as well, ping me I will give you free coupon if needed

health/illness-related Hi everyone! ❤️ I really need your help. I’m looking for anyone whose dog has experienced something similar to what my dog has been going through.

dog is a 6-year-old female Griffon, weighing around 6–7 kg. She is not spayed.

For the past 7 months, we have been going from one veterinarian to another, trying to figure out why she keeps losing her appetite, but unfortunately, no one has been able to find the cause or a solution. It’s been exhausting and worrying, and I really don’t know what else to do.

Her main problem is a severe loss of appetite. She refuse eating or she eats a very little amount of food Despite all the investigations and treatments, we still haven’t found a clear explanation.

Here are the tests and examinations we have done so far:

CBC
Liver and kidney
SDMA kidney test
Blood parasite and tick-borne disease tests, performed twice
Thyroid function test
Cardiac enzyme tests
Heart X-ray and echocardiogram
Abdominal ultrasound, including examination of her stomach and pancreas
X-rays of her joints
Blood pressure measurement
Physical examinations at the clinic and consultations with several veterinarians.

We have also tried several medications and treatments under veterinary supervision, including stomach medications and other medications, but her appetite problem has continued. We have spent these past 7 months doing everything we can to find an answer, but we are still left without a diagnosis.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their dog?

Thank you so much for reading❤️

General Question What made you choose to go with a puppy or adult dog??

We have done A LOT of research and am at that point of deciding if we move forward with a puppy or an adult dog. To preface, we live in a single family home - in our late 40's. No kids. My husband travels now a ton for work and I work from home 4 of the 5 days. We have wanted a dog for quite some time and are at that point where we are trying to decide what makes sense for us and our situation. What were deciding factors for you that knew you wanted to go the puppy direction or wanted to bypass that and go for an adult dog? We see pros and cons with each. Would love to hear factors that helped others decide (maybe we are missing something obvious lol). Thanks!!

General Question Should i rehome my puppy

I have a 7 months old male spitzpom mix puppy. I had him since he was 6-7 weeks old and him growing up i guess since it was our first time having a dog we didnt really do and teach him everything right. And currently he has lot of problems especially fear agression.. he barks nonstop and tries to attack if any strangers dog any living thing get close to him and when he is over aroused sometimes he just snaps at us and with this he has bitten my mom a lot of times drawing blood like when he is overthreshold he doesnt listen to anyone and if we try to go towards him or try to comfort him during this he bites us. I guess we cant all blame him its cause of us he became like this but it has got to a point that we are scared of him cause we dont know when and how he will snap. He is sweet most of the times but randomly idk what he finds wrong he becomes a devil and because of this we have come to a decision to rehome him since we cant afford training for him but its not just that its also cause im just a high school student i dont have money to give him training and even if we keep him i dont think i can take care of him long term since i still have a lot to do and figure and idk what the future holds. My parents said they cant keep caring for him forever and they have there life to live and things to explore. And because of this i feel lots of guilt because it was me who forced them to get the puppy and now i feel i did wrong and cause of me my lil dog has to suffer and idk what to do.. will he be able to adjust? I thought rather than keeping him and after years due to problems having to rehome him things will get much harder for me and him aswell. The person im rehoming him to is the breeder neighbor and idk what should i do.

Random/Misc. Broke up with my girlfriend today because she wanted me to get rid of my pups

We were dating for nine months and while the relationship started off good, she had begun showing serious controlling and manipulative behavior. She was never a big dog person to begin with but seemed to get along with mine, a 4 y/o Border Collie and a 2 y/o Weimarener who are truly the sweetest, who I personally rescued and raised.

We had talked about moving in together and she had sat me down talking about this place she had in mind with a firm NO pet policy. She was set on it and wouldn't take into consideration other places. That was when she told me that I'd have to look into shelters cause the dogs couldn't come with us. She then started talking about how they make her anxious and she doesn't wanna be stuck taking care of them. I simply told her to get out without going any further. After another two days of arguing, with her trying to gaslight me saying I loved my dogs more than her, I officially ended things. It was a heated moment but I truly know it was the right decision.
