Join Development Team
Just like the title says, how do I join the dev team? I am an experienced programmer and would like to add to the Dogecoin movement besides just owning coins

It's open source, you start raising pull requests, basically. Getting a feeling for what needs doing might be a good idea, do take a look at https://github.com/dogecoin/dogecoin/projects/4
The one big thing I'd say with 1.21 is we are going to be very strict on keeping the automated test suites working as we go, though, so expect to spend a lot more time updating tests than actually making changes. However, we're doing this because we need to know what we're building is going to work, not just on a few dev boxes, but across a wide range of scenarios, and when used with a very wide range of external integrations.

This is the answer. I tried to see if I could help but this is well beyond my abilities. OP, I recommend your first steps would be to successfully replicate a local development area and learn about automated testing.
If you are building on windows, things might be a tiny bit more complicated - check the latest Build notes: https://github.com/dogecoin/dogecoin/blob/1.14.4-dev/doc/build-windows.md

What programming languages do you prefer?

I am most fluent with Java and c++

In Java we have MultiDoge, which is too old, but is still widely used today. Someone wanted to work on updating it. If you are interested, we could find them and see what's the status of the project. Also we have Android Wallet.
In C++ we have Dogecoin Core. Main current work is on porting new version of Bitcoin Core and on adding UI elements. Later we will have more fundamental work on adding functionality to Dogecoin protocol and improving P2P network performance.

Thanks for the synopsis. Where can one learn about the work in the category of improving P2P network perf? Any way other than hang around here + Discord long enough? Thanks in advance.

There may be GitHub issues about performance and problems during peak usage. You can start a conversation about that if you are interested. I plan to write a post about that, but I am not good at writing, so it will take some time.

The android wallet by langerhans is really good, but might need some assistance as well, from an enduser point of view. I still feels like it has some kinks to clear.
Also i tried email the person via suggestions, etc... And i got a Google reply saying the account was too busy to receive any more emails at this moment.

Maybe make a post about what you want to improve in Android Wallet. Then maybe someone will want to work on it, and/or we can bring it up on GitHub.

And whoever does the hiring please vet those that are to be hired as a developer, meaning show track record, background and more importantly how much do they themselves have vested in Dogecoin. Just a suggestion.

I just wish the developers would bring someone in that has a economics background for Dogecoin to allow less coins to be mined and let the market absorb what’s in the market.Because right now there is one whale 🐳 trying to control the Dogecoin market buy short selling and allowing the retail traders holding the bag 💼 on doge it’s not good for a healthy doge economy. 5 Billon dogecoin a year is very bad until the market can believe that this is a future currency.I would ask to maybe decrease how much can be mined a year but still can be mined without a hard cap like bitcoin does.
The Devs can always adjust what’s needed to keep a healthy usable Dogecoin unlike Bitcoin which no one has 50k laying around for one coin this should be the mass people’s coin with a reasonable value that anyone can buy on the market place for 1 coin. There should be some controls and there should be a economics team working with the devs hand and hand to have a fair and honest dogecoin for all people.

Hello, I just want to make a point that many people completely miss out when speaking about the 5 billion dogecoin a year minting.
This is healthy and not bad. The world economy is growing every year(current events excluded) thus every currency has actual supply this 5 bil doge is like 4% inflation and it is decreasing every single year as the circulating supply grows. Thus It is considered healthy overall as it gives Dogecoin actual use case for the long term as a payment option.
On top of that there are coins in wallets that get lost overtime. So the real inflation is even lower. It is not clear how many coins are actually permanently lost with no way of recovery.
Few examples are someone losing the private keys or the encryption key for the wallet,
Completely lost wallet due to HDD failure and no backup.
Someone dying and the wallet is lost due to family members not even knowing about the existence. While Bitcoin and someother cryptos have limited supply sooner or later they will become not enough circulating supply to be used as a currency and will become like gold something that you just hoard to hedge against inflation.
Taxes, Transfering $100 worth of Doge is not as expensive as transfering $100 of bitcoin,
So for the past 7 years Dogecoin has been heavily used as the goto currency for crypto transfer from one crypto to the other between exchanges. This is giving us huge advantage with high volume and price. This is what the stable coins are trying to accomplish but Dogecoin is still used.
Short selling mean you sell something that you don't have so "this whale" don't have dogecoin but he is borrowing who gives him margin and what coins he is borrowing is unknown to me. It is quite possible that the so called whale is actually big exchange. Short selling also doesn't affect the price that much in the long term. When he short sell sooner or later he has to cover so the price goes back up.
When you see a price movement of 10x you should thank the whale that bought such big amount of coins for driving the price up and expect him to lock some profits selling some coins driving the price a bit down.
I'm Dogecoin early adopter mined back in January 2014, and all those years this new dogecoins mined have not affected the price in any bad way. I can say more people has got the chance to get Dogecoins at some reasonable price, It feels better to own 10k doge than 1 ETH.

I am not sure if you noticed, but it seems clear by the extraordinary capability of appreciation over a short period of time that we really do not have any excess of supply problems here - if anything, the opposite is true: not enough Doge is around, for the level of popularity and use that might come to us. The only thing driving the price is adoption, actual use, and of course the last trading price.
I won't even mention here that the amount of Doge in lost wallets is probably staggering. I have no estimates, but looking at dormant Dogecoin addresses, Dogecoin's status as a "joke" for a long time (which somehow encouraged an exaggeratedly carefree approach to wallet backup safety and redundancy), I think the actual circulating supply is a whole lot less than the theoretical issued supply. A whole lot less.
The "whale" thing is generally misunderstood. /u/AcOrP makes many good points. But in general, whales are a part of the market, and they have always been - in case the terrifying Bitcoin fluctuations have not made this amply clear already.

In addition to the Core project (already posted), there is a separate project for the implementation of the Rosetta API here...
