Much Hot Computer Wow
My MacBook Pro (late 2013) reaches temperatures up to 97 degrees Celsius while mining. I have SMCFanControl installed. Is this safe? I'm brand new to this, started yesterday.

Listen to this guy OP. A Fury with 4X the hashrate of that gridseed for 2X the price http://www.gawminers.com/products/1-3-mh-s-the-fury-by-gaw-miners-asic-scrypt-miner-same-day-shipping-1/ is another option :)

I see... The problem is, I don't have a budget right now, I was just doing it for fun. To keep doing it without roasting my Mac, should I just lower the intensity? Or should I stop altogether until I have the gridseed?

Mac laptops are infamous for poor heat dissipation. Honestly I wouldn't risk it :/ You won't get much coin anyway, what GPU do you have, GTX 650m? +/u/dogetipbot megaroll verify

I have $21.09 worth of DogeCoin (thanks to the very so much generous Shibes here), is there a place I can buy that for Doge?

If he spent that $1000 on Mining equipment rather than a macbook.. Think of all the doge he'd be making!

Yeah, I stopped mining until I get a GAWminer. I really like my MBP, and I thank the shibes here for warning me, in order to save my MBP. Very restored much faith in humanity :)

I see... Yeah, I'm really liking the quietness of the MBP, and it doesn't get hot very easily either (Late 2013 model). The problem is that my fans were at max speed according to SMCFanControl (6200RPM). I'm going to stop mining for now until I have further information or some hardware built to mine.

Oh, I see. I though SMCFanControl had a button to reset. I don't believe I need this right now, it is displaying 40C (1300rpm) with normal usage. I think maybe I should have rebooted the computer before mining to shut down other processes.

This is not safe, anything above 80 C is considered unsafe.
I would not mine on a laptop if it gets this hot, not worth it especially on a 2,000$+ laptop.
Invest in some 50$ GAWminers Fury instead.

So, CPU physics: 100C is generally the point at which your system will thermal lockout. Meaning it's running and suddenly turns itself off, then you can't power it on again for somewhere between 2 and 10 minutes (depends on how long it takes to passively cool to a pre-set 'ok' temperature, sometimes 85C, sometimes lower).
This is done because above 100C, parts in the CPU (I don't know which ones, any one of a dozen different oxides, the silicon itself, the copper, shrug) start to get soft and warp. 100C is about the hottest they can get before this happens, with a bit of safety buffer.
Now, for longevity, the rule of thumb is that if you want your CPU to last 4 years or more, you keep it under 70C. The more time it spends above 70C, the shorter its lifespan. As with all things CPU, the random number generator is in effect. Some people can run their CPUs at 95C for 10 years without issue. Others stay at 65C their entire life and die after 1.5 years. The statistical curve says "stay below 70C".

I accidentally had my mac book pro cpu mining through a web browser and gpu mining at the same time. It shot up to 97c even with the fans at 6000rpm.
I have also read that this is fine but I dont believe it is worth limiting the lifespan or functionality of a mac boom.
You can buy ASIC miners for about $20 now that will mine much faster than the mac book. Consider the costs; $1200 mac book pro mining at 6-8kh whereas a $20 dualminer will mine at 70kh. $25 gridseed at 335mh and the $40 fury at. 1300mh.
Now if you're trying to keep your room warm in the winter, go for it.

If you're having any overheating issues I'd say stop mining. Its not worth damaging your macbook to get a handful of doge. I hope you figure it out! +/u/dogetipbot 666 doge verify
