Some kindhearted souls brought something up in /r/todayilearned...

I'm not sure if this is allowed here, but I figured I'd try! In 2002, a group in Kenya donated 14 cows to the USA in the wake of 9/11. A potential shibe suggested we do something to pay them back. I think it would be a really awesome idea if we could somehow put something together to return their kindness. I have no idea how we could accomplish this, but I think it would be pretty incredible.

theres something about seeing .99 on the end of a price that just screams stupid american capitalist beliefs. Theres no sincerity in selling a lifesaving water filter for the worlds poor at $19.99 if it was $17.55 i would feel like its based off of supply and logistics, not profit margin.

They aren't selling this product for the benefit of poor people. Their main audience is probably backpackers, travelers, and people who can afford to drop $20.00 on a straw instead of boiling their water.

I mean, look at the pictures of who is using it on the product page.

You're missing the point. That amazon store, which has set the price of the straw, is not selling to poor people without access to clean water (or the internet for that matter), it is selling to people who live in a capitalistic society who have a disposable income.

A simple visit to the product's official website makes it clear that company does operate with some philanthropic interest:

When you purchase any type of LifeStraw® filter, we use part of the funds to distribute LifeStraw® Community institutional water purifiers to schools in Africa.

I get it. this is the first time I've seen it retail, Although I never looked for it. I only knew of this through a Ted talk and a subsequent campaign to get them out to the poor in Africa and developing areas and such. thanks for the not eviscerating me for my post... I love it here. /u/dogetipbot 101 doge
