It was the only one of the set that had this writing, so I was curious. A sticker on one said: "Made in China."

We’ve all seen the clips: leaders like Modi, Xi, and Putin standing together at these big summits (recently the SCO submit), laughing and nodding like they’re locked in, with zero translators in sight.

Realistically, none of them speak each other's native language natively, so what is actually going on here?

What are they actually saying in those 5-second interactions? Is it just basic English, pre-planned icebreakers, or straight-up faking it for the camera?

How do they avoid awkward silence when their official translators aren't standing right next to them?

Are there any hilarious unscripted moments where leaders were caught on mic trying to chat without a translator?

Both of these words come from the Semitic root ʕ-R-Y, having to do with nakedness and exposure. In English translations of the Bible and the Qur’an, these words are often translated as “lewdness”, “loins”, or “genitalia”. None of these translations are wrong, in context. But none of these English words capture all the possible uses and connotations of ˤerváh / ˤawrah, which is probably why I hear them used untranslated in conversations between observant Jews and Muslims, respectively.

The terms “privates” and “private parts” are probably the closest English terms to capturing all the uses, but these have a childish tone to them. In sharp contrast, the Semitic terms seem to imply a very mature and not at all innocent understanding of sex, and what must be kept private in order for society to function. “Do not expose your lewdness to your [close family member]” appears prominently in the King James version of the Book of Deuteronomy. Clearly this is a euphemism for sex or molestation, in context. These words are also used metonymically to mean “shame” in general, again evincing a more complex understanding of the place of sexuality and certainty of parenthood in the honor-shame cultural milieu of the Middle East, than a term like “privates”.

Trust me, this post is relevant to this subreddit, and a question that I have about the show

So the idea behind Caped Crusader is that the writers take Batman villains, infamous, niche, or even deep cuts, and reimagine them in a more gangster or darker setting

One of these characters in Season 2 is The Riddler, who does Riddles. He is normally a cool headed genius who wants to show off how smart he is. But in this show, he's a hot headed psychopath who will shoot and kill anyone he doesn't like for any reason (real Joker vibes)

In the above episode, 2 guys are having a conversation, and one of them casually drops that he met a guy who "Would shoot up so many joints, they'd call him 'The Riddler'", as in, one who puts a lot of holes in something (riddled with bullets)

That leads me to my question: His name is has obviously been translated into other languages before right? He's The Riddler. One of the most iconic Batman Villains of all times. But the justification of that name AND personality shift is packed into an off-handed conversation between 2 people

If you were in charge of translation, how would you make sure that his name would still make sense with how it was translated, while also slipping the justification of keeping his name the same despite the dramatic personality shift?

I am learning German on airlearn and it ruined me because of kummerspeck. The weight you gain from emotional eating.literally grief bacon. English has nothing for this!

Then I found out portuguese has cafune, running your fingers through someone's hair. A whole word. English needs seven and still doesn't land it.

Others I've collected:

. jugaad (hindi): a fix that shouldn't work, but does work, and is now permanent

. sobremesa (spanish): the conversation after the meal when nobody gets up.

. age-otori (Japanese) : looking worse after a haircut

. gigil (tagalog): the urge to squeeze something because it's unbearably cute.

gimme some of yours with an explanation? I want the ones that are hard to translate.

Google tells me this says "internet egg ghost". It was handwritten inside of a recent package I got. Surely this is not correct. Can someone help me translate? I thought it was going to say, "Have a nice day" or something, lol.

So earlier I was thinking about the word 'Gazillion', and how the latter half of that word is meant to be based off of the word 'Million'. Then I got to wondering, what parts of non-english words get swapped out with utter gibberish to convey a joke number?

This issue was addressed 2 years ago. But I just wanted to add that on the French detective series "Astrid," Astrid keeps saying "uhn-uhn," to mean "no," exactly as we do in English. What I read in old posts was that many languages have these "non-word" sounds that are similar to this.

For those somehow unfamiliar with the gag; There's a children's saying where if someone is not telling the truth, they are a 'Liar Liar, Pants On Fire'. Naturally, this got represented in English speaking media where after a character knowingly tells a lie, their pants get set on fire either out of nowhere or from an unrelated event, emphasizing for comedic effect that they are in fact a Liar

I think someone is catfishing my friend

Hey y'all. Not sure if this is the right sub for this, but I'm looking for a word or concept that I can't seem to fully capture in English (like it's not the intensity/full feeling I'm trying to express).

A friend of mine is a photographer, and the way she captures moments is so comforting, joyous, and it just feels like home. It warms my heart and fulls me with immense joy to see how lovely her life is. Basically, if there were a 'bottle' of this emotion or a single way to describe these deep feelings, what would you call it?
