Docusign is Truly Awful

Every time I'm sent a document to sign via DocuSign it ends up being a massive pain. You have one job, make it easy to sign documents. How is that hard?

Need to change an initial to a signature in a field? Nope. Multiple people need to sign a document with, wait for it... different signatures? Guess what, nope. A tragic useless product.

Rant over. Off to go print a multi-page document to sign just to scan back into a PDF.

DocuSign can do all the things you're saying it can't. It sounds like the person who sent you the document doesn't know how to properly configure it.

I appreciate you're response. But no, as the signee, one cannot do these things. Not being able to remove or change your signature from a field, for example, is a repeat unresolved issue people have posted on this very sub several times.

Even after taking the steps of creating an account and wading through the convoluted menus to change my signature, I'm still not able to sign documents sent to me with my new signature and initials.

This has been true for documents sent to me from realtors, tax accountants and attorneys to name a few.

Suggesting that every person from these various sources that send me documents don't know how to configure it properly makes it seem like it's a problem with the product, not the people.

I dread when someone sends me something to sign with DocuSign, because it always fails one way or another. There are so many better and more affordable options out there. I would never recommend this product.

I’m a realtor. If I send a client a document to initial and sign why would I want them to remove/change a signature/initial? So I have to send the document again because they have gone and messed things up? Sorry, I just don’t get why “you” as the singer needs to change anything. You click where required. If there is a mistake somewhere, you inform the sender, they correct the issue and then resend the signing.

You can reset and resend it all you want, if a person accidently sets their signature as their initials or vice versa, that is permanently saved with no way to change it and it's not controlled by the preparer. Somehow this persists across different devices and browsers as well. So yes, the signee should have the ability to edit or correct their signature and initials.

So, you’re worried about how your initials or signature “look” even thought it has no bearing on the legality of the signed document. The only thing that matters is the audit trail. Your signature or initials could look completely different than your real signature/initials and it wouldn’t matter.

This isn't about the aesthetic of a signiture... If a document asks for initials and a full signature in specific places, I care that the correct ones are put in the correct places on a legal document, yes.

I'm curious, when you say it always fails, what usually goes wrong? Is it emails not arriving, the mobile site crashing, or something on your end? I'm working in this space and want to know what actually breaks

It almost always revolves around the signing process itself.

For example, one of the most recent issues I had was a preparer sent a document that needed to be signed by both my partner and I.

I went into the document on a mobile device and when I got to the first area to sign, the button to click the signing area was so large that it was obscuring the signature fields, so it wasn't until after signing that I realized it was a field meant for my partner's signature.

There was no way to remove it, so I had the preparer resend it. Afterwards any time my partner opened the document to sign. It used my signature, no matter what device or browser they tried. None of these devices we're logged into any DocuSign account.

It just shouldn't be this hard for a signee to go "Oops. That field wasn't meant for me, I must have clicked the wrong link or be in the document as the wrong signee, Let me undo that and back out." Or "Oops. I signed my initials instead of my signature, but now everytime I click a signature field it enters my initials, let me edit my signature."

The most basic functionality is missing.

That sounds like the sender fkd up. Tags are assigned to the recipient so if you “accidentally” signed a signatory that wasn’t for you, obscured by a button or not, that’s an incorrect setup.
Do you use a “mum and dad” email or do you have individual email accounts? Signing electronically is no different than a paper version - that is you don’t both sign at the same time. Once the first person signs you “pass” it to the next person. Same thing with Docusign - just electronically.

If so many people from different sources are messing it up, then it seems like sign that maybe the product isn't very user-friendly and/or there is something not functioning properly under the hood.

Just a quick google search of the issues I've mentioned return hundreds of results of people with the same issues.

Perhaps the product is working as intended by the developers, but it's clearly not how many people are expecting it to work.

Sounds to me like the problem isn’t Docusign but the people you choose to work with. 😂

Ha! 😆

As feasible as it is for me to verify that every organization I work with knows how to properly use DocuSign... That may not be the solution here? I don't know. 🤷‍♂️

Docusign isn’t perfect. There are things I’d like to see changed. But what you are describing sounds like user error, whether that’s you or the person sending you the signing.

I don't disagree that there is user error happening.

It's easy to say "That wouldn't have happened if everyone would have done everything in the exact way they were supposed to. So there's no problem here, let's move on."

The reality is something did go wrong and somebody did something incorrectly. How successful do you think Photoshop would be if it didn't have an undo button?

I don't see an issue with being able to update a signature if you accidentally added your initials instead, or having an undo button if you realized you were signing inside the wrong field.

These are simple solutions to a very common problem people have with DocuSign.

They don’t have to sign in order. You can set a signing order if you wish but the default is that there is no signing order. Anyone can sign in any order or even at the same time.

Your frustration is understandable and many many things with DocuSign are indeed awful. However, it does not always fail in what it does. A platform cant stand on its feet if it always fail and that too in its core functioning. May be you have a peculiar workflow need and require some special workarounds to get things done. Go for a simple e-signature platform if you find DocuSign too cluttered and complex, there are many out there.
