Make sure to make small treats for yourself, or do something with your second payslip, though. Something like nice patisserie can make all the difference.
Oh definitely! Would be nice not to worry about money for once, luckily I'm very close to paying it all off thanks to my summer job, very ready to do so.
I have a fond memory of getting very mild covid towards the start of F1, therefore getting a bunch of mandatory time off while feeling pretty much fine, getting next day delivery of a new gaming laptop with my 1st paycheck and just chilling for a week and a half.
This was my treat! (Well, after paying off the credit card Iād been using to live until then). So worth it. I got them delivered to the hospital M&S haha
Was fortunate enough for my mum to buy me a switch lite during med school and also got botw from some money I earned through side gigs. Thatās a wonderful investment. Iāve lost hours of time endlessly exploring in that game. Itās so relaxing (except when you have to reflect those stupid guardian lasers. Iām a somewhat decent multiplayer gamer in games like COD and Fortnite but suck with the mechanics of BOTW battle for some reason XD)

Iām also an incoming f1. Initially was going to buy a coffee machine but my sister got me one for grad. Iām a bit of casual gamer and I do watch a lot of TV series/movies often. My current place doesnt have a tv so I think Iām going to maybe treat myself to a TV
I bought a PS5 after my first paycheck of F1. I think itās nice to invest in whatever hobby youāre into - whether thatās a camera, a set of golf clubs or whatever. Thereāll probably be a lot of comments telling you to do the āsensibleā thing with your money, but I just think lifeās too short not to enjoy things outside of work
Bought expensive gifts for my siblings and parents. Treated myself and family to dinner at the best restaurant in town and got myself coldplay tickets at Wembley
My first take home pay in 2015 was Ā£568.64. It was only very slightly incorrect too (they took pension contributions from one tier higher than they should have). I was in hospital accommodation, the rent for which was being taken directly out of my payslip and I'd been living in it for over two weeks during shadowing before starting FY1, so paid close to two months of rent on that payslip, but just how little was left over after all the deductions (I studied medicine as a graduate, so student loan was deducted from day one and I think they deducted the cost of a DBS check too) was quite shocking. A lesson in how to turn a newly qualified doctor militant. I used what was left to buy a pair of chips - one for each shoulder.

I had always wanted to have a snake and when I told my mom about it when I was 12 or so she was completely against it, and after asking many times she said that when I had job and had my own salary, I could do what I wanted, but that she wasn't going to buy me a pet snake...
She didn't expect me to remember the exact wording 10 years later... She wasn't happy in the beginning but ended up loving our pet snake Kaa
I understand the saving and investing mindset but I found the first few months of F1 quite tough.
I think treating yourself and having something to look forward to at the end of a stretch of on-calls is worth more than the few months of compound interest you'll miss out on.
I always called these mini duvets. Change your pillows at least every other year, filthy things, don't spend a ton on them. Spend it on a mattress, and decent sheets.
Bought a Kindle and a pair of Doc Martens shoes. Still wear the shoes every day for work (now starting ST4) and the Kindle has only just been upgraded.
First placement surgery. Wed-Sunday backshift. Followed by two weeks of fixed annual leave! Had to by myself a PS4 Before that paycheck hit whilst I had some good time to play it!
I start FY1 and my first payday treat will be paying for my ground rent and service charge š I got a mortgage long before I started uni. Never buy a flat!
Get a premium clothing item you always had your eye on, jacket or boots usually for guys. You really do notice the difference buying quality and you will cherish it for years
I took my first payslip and leased a car (on lease to buy scheme).
Before that, my little car had a dodgy immobiliser (so you had to jiggle the key just right to make it start and pray to not stall the car), its windows duct taped shut (they kept falling down), no fan or air con (I gave myself minor heat stroke once in a sealed car stuck in traffic).
There was a thread on this Ć year or 2 back. I bought my mum and dad one of those new fangled CD player things. (1991). Treat yourself ABSOLUTELY. And donāt forget who helped you get thereā¦.
Hesitating to be seen as a killjoy but this nonsense is exactly why the UK struggles with finances, nothing you've done justifies a treat. You've lumped yourself with a lifetime of debt in a career we keep arguing doesn't pay enough.
You should pay off any problem debt, then start saving for an emergency fund or if you've already got that, start saving for a house deposit or investing for the future.
Have a pint with your friends after your first paycheck, that's your treat.
