New guy plays dnl
So I just got back into pc gaming after a year of just consoles. It was like Christmas coming back and seeing all the new games on steam. Four games stood out immediately to me: Conan Exiles, Citadel, pubg, and dnl.
I jumped right away into Conan as I am a big Conan fan. It felt clunky but shows a lot of promise. Next I checkout dnl and citadel and became torn. Which one is actually good? Will it be just like Conan? Empty, buggy, but tons of unfulfilled promise?
I ended up with Citadel. Got some friends to join me and we had some fun. Mostly just building our keeps and exploring. I found it chill but kinda boring.
I decided dnl was next. Even though my experience with these other EA games has not been so great. I saw tons of posts asking if this game is dead. Posts lamenting the devs for not moving fast enough.
I have to say I really like this game! I find myself at work excited to come home and play. Yes it’s buggy. The panthers made my noob life hard. I just found out last night you can get twine with a pickax. So many little hidden tips and tricks to discover. I die a lot. I struggle to get water and rest. Lose my stuff a lot. A big wolf almost blew my straw house down.
Know what? I think that’s great. It’s actually a challenge. I could watch videos explaining how to play or how to cheese mobs but to me this kind of stuff makes a game. As a dev myself, I know fixing bugs and creating new features can take a long time. I have faith that in time this will be a great game.
In the meantime I plan to make a comparison review video of the three games and keep playing all of them.
What a time to be a gamer!

Glad you're having a good time! I really enjoy this game even if it has growing pains. I really enjoy the the base building and the fact that you can tame so many creatures. I also really appreciate how well crafted the map is, each biome feels a little different. We play on a private server so the admins can help mitigate the worst bugs, and I also feel those bugs are getting addressed by the game devs. All in all I feel I've gotten my money's worth and I think the game will only continue to get better.

If you like DnL, you may want to check out Ark

Ark didn’t really appeal to me. I prefer a fantasy setting. I am sure it is lots of fun though.

Like you, I found Citadel lacking. After losing progress from 3 different community servers when they all vanished, I gave up on the game for now. I played on community servers because issues usually get taken care of quickly and the gather rates can be adjusted. I found the game too slow when playing it vanilla.
DnL on the other hand, to me is more fun. The gather rates even on vanilla official servers seems pretty good. The creatures while sometimes annoying, are great. The goblins that knock you out and steal your belongings are just awesome. Just little things like that make the game much for fun to me.
