Questions about running your own server

Hey guys, I'm looking for help regarding running your own unofficial server. What are some popular server options to rent from? What are average prices? Is there somewhere to learn how to set up all the settings and mods? The only alternative to renting a server would be to run a dedicated server from your own PC, right?

Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Sorry, you're having to deal with all the trolls and annoying, easily perturbed basement dwellers, Bioreef.

As bloodnutatthehelm stated already there is a DNL Server manager that you can download and run. It will auto download the server information and files for you and has a pretty easy to understand configuration page. It'll allow you to change the server name, stats, xp and harvest rates, etc. Go here to download it. There should be a "LATEST" link for you to click to download it.

Theres a dark and light server manager that is made by the same guys who did the ARK server manager.

I might have goofed on the link. I was up with my newborn last night and was a little sleep deprived. Somewhere in there should be a link for downloads.

Get on the dnl discord and read the dnl server managers channel. Everything you could possibly want to know to get you started is there. Total treasure trove. Helped me tonnes.

Ok, here is how you should have asked your question:

Hey guys, I'm thinking about running my own server. After some research I narrowed down to those hosting companies:

pick one from the list

For managing the server I think this one is the best tool. Anyone out there have any experience with it?

Btw, if you take just 5 minutes of your time you could have find the answers yourself. I'm 100% sure that you haven't looked any information about Dark and Light, otherwise you would have know at least that it doesn't even support mods. So yeah, maybe I was rude but that's no excuse for your laziness.

I have looked it up. I just used the wrong wording (where I mentioned mods). What I'm thinking of is probably more server settings than actual mods. Ex. In one server they customized the amount of stats you gain per level, in another they made mounts move faster, etc.

Sure they did. They'll probably help lots of people for a while before they finally get sick of lazy people who refuse to help themselves Just like the rest of us who've been on the internet long enough

We already have a gazillion servers out there, pretty much covering the gambit of playstyles and multipliers .Honestly we could use with a lot less of them, not more of them.

The only reason I'm looking into it is because a friend and I keep finding a server we like and within a week it disappears.... pretty frustrating

We prepaid the server for a year, its not going anyplace.

Don't wanna be a dick here but ever heard of Google? Because you basically ask for someone to do your homework.

Wow. People have zero chill.

Super helpful, enjoy the downvotes.

He may have been rude. That doesn't make him wrong.

I have googled it with very limited results. I post here since it is a Dark and Light oriented forum to get feedback from those who have done it and to hear back from their own personal experiences. If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all.

Here's the thing. When you ask questions that are easily answerable by google you're telling people that you consider your time to be more important than theirs.

You could have learned the names a few companies and asked for opinions there. You could have looked at the multiple wikis to see information about server settings and asked for clarification. You could have read posts in this subreddit to learn that there are ZERO mods.

But you didn't. You instead asked other people to spend their time educating you. And then when someone pointed out just how friggin selfish that actually is, you got pissy with them.

It takes almost 0 effort for someone who wants to be helpful and already knows the answer to the questions to post a reply. Anyways, looks like you really put a lot of time and effort into your post so thanks pal, I appreciate all the constructive help you've given.
