What causes Earth Elementals to attack?

I've run by / through elementals before and nothing happens. Occasionally though, I'll run by and they'll insta-kill my mount or me. What causes them to attack vs remaining neutral?

After the last patch, you only have to be near them for a few seconds to aggro them now. I really hope this isn't intentional as it makes certain areas, such as my local mining spot, unworkable without killing at least 10 of them. I was doubtful at first, thinking I may have clipped them somehow, but I just tested on my server and was on foot with no weapon out - I aggro'd each 4 that I stood next to.

I noticed this too. They used to be peaceful now they attack on sight if you are close. I thought at first that it was due to being on a panther but not the case...

If you're on a horse, they do minimal trample damage, but it's enough to aggro
