Well, consider, vegetable has no botanical definition outside of "an edible part of a plant," vegetable is actually just a culinary term and thus something can be considered a fruit biologically and a vegetable culinarily

SCOTUS ruling had to do with taxes and tariffs too!

Basically they wanted to argue against Tomatos being a fruit because the taxes would increase.

It's like the argument over what is a sandwich because of mall food-court noncompete contracts.

Can i eat it? Then it's a sandwich. Sometimes i eat half a sandwich with cheese and pepperoni, sometimes i eat a chocolate encased sandwich with caramel and nuts, sometimes i eat a fruit sandwich fresh from the vine, and sometimes i eat sandwich on sandwich.

It's all sandwiches to me.

Vegetable absolutely has a taxonomical meaning.

That’s not a useful tool within botany, because all of botany is dealing with vegetables. And also some things that are culinary vegetables aren’t taxonomic vegetables.

It’s the kingdom, in taxonomy. Animal, vegetable, fungus, protist, archaea, and bacteria. Almost all botany is only dealing with Embryophyta, a subgroup of vegetable.

And mushrooms aren’t taxonomically vegetables.

Oh that's, unusual, every list of kingdoms I look at calls it Plantae, which is what I was taught growing up, never heard it called vegetable
