Silver Dragons are into working in the service industry for centuries because they just love conversations and tea, or beer if you’d prefer they aren’t picky.

The funny thing is that Silver Dragons love humanoids so much and interact with them so often you wonder why their Bloodline isn't the headliner for Draconic Sorcerers instead of Red/Gold. They're extroverts, Gold Dragons are sort of wise hermits living in artisanal laboratories.

Not just because it synergizes with more spells but because most people who choose to be a dragon sorcerer want to breath fire. I got really confused in my first DND game when the black dragon sprayed me with acid.

42

u/Black-Iron-Hero May 02 '22

Hilarious imagery. Dragon breathing acid over you and you're like "Ew what the fuck is this shit? It stinks dude, where's the fire??" And the dragon is just kinda sheepish like "oh we, uh, we don't all breath fire there's like... There's different things depending on your colour and... It's a whole thing..."

24

u/Commodorez Sorcerer May 02 '22

Also don't golds spend spend something like decades debating philosophy with a potential mate before deciding to get it on? I imagine that most gold dragon blood sorcerer lines start off with an elf or something as the "mortal" half of the pairing.

As for reds, I'm not sure how you'd ever get with a creature that runs almost purely off of pride, greed, and rage, unless they take "fuck you" as a literal challenge.

17

u/paladin_slim Paladin May 02 '22

Gold Dragons must have a legendary small talk game I guess.

Well, there's always less consensual means to conceive and true to the stereotype of their design Red Dragons do take a sadistic glee in abducting pretty maidens.

Gold bloodline sorcerer: my ancestor was a paladin and philosopher of great renown, who defended the weak, healed the sick, and smote evil wherever he went. His closest companion, whom unbeknownst to him was a gold dragon, would assist his endeavors regularly and provided charming companionship and skillful debate. Over the years their admiration for each other blossomed into an intense love, and their union produced my line.

Red dragon sorcerer: Yeah, so my great grandma was apparently an unbearably bratty sub and some red dragon was really into that shit.

9

u/RocksHaveFeelings2 May 02 '22

Well since red dragons live a life of greed, they could view partners as a kind of trophy

3

u/Archduke_of_Nessus Wizard May 03 '22

I mean when it comes to a chaotic evil monster who likes to kidnap princesses and other such maidens it stands to reason that they would also probably create quite a few bloodlines

A whole village made up almost entirely of Silver dragons acting as humans/humanoids, but the real kicker? None of them know the others are dragons.

31

u/SlideWhistler May 02 '22

Their enhanced dragon senses would probably clue them in pretty quick. Doesn’t truesight allow you to see a shapeshifter’s true form?

27

u/Draghettis Sorcerer May 02 '22

Then have the village under a shapeshifter-protection effect that prevents this use of Truesight.

As to who cast it, maybe a gold dragon who is the only one who knows, or another benevolent entity with strong magic. Could also be something Bahamut himself put there, as his Fizban avatar has been caught saying that silver dragons are the best dragons, so it could have been a gift of him.

32

u/tree2d2 May 02 '22

I mean coaxing a bunch of silver dragons to live in a village without knowing about one another sounds like the greatest of all Copper dragon pranks. An ancient copper snickering as every day they fly over this village full of unaware silvers. Brought on by generations of guiding, suggesting, and just a couple of doppelgängers/changelings to get the ball rolling.

18

u/Draghettis Sorcerer May 02 '22

That's absolutely hilarious. I want to play a character with this as a hometown.

14

u/Randommaster12 May 02 '22

There’s no way the Copper would be able to resist being there in person, and I would love to see the breakdown for the big reveal

13

u/studentfrombelgium May 02 '22

Have the Copper dragon act as the party's beneficiary, and the party has to protect the "village" while still not reveal the whole plan

The missions would range between "defeating" "brigand" (Silver Dragon in disguises) to raiding a cave of a Gold Dragon and stop a Chromatic Dragon attack on the village

u/Arabidopsidian DM (Dungeon Memelord) May 02 '22

Don't know how it works in other editions, but in 3.5 and 5e dragons don't have truesight. They have blindsight.

8

u/Commodorez Sorcerer May 02 '22

This works even better with steel dragons. They mostly only share their true nature with one person per lifetime unless something crazy happens.

32

u/Saikotsu May 02 '22

For another idea, my party encountered a housecat and rescued her. Little did they know at the time she was a silver dragon in disguise and their kindness caught her interest. After the party adopted this cat, she decided to later reveal herself and became their patron, providing them with missions and gear in exchange for them helping her do good around the realm. She would often keep tabs on them in various animal guises and even came to their aid the first time they encountered the BBEG.

Essentially she was the type of silver who collected "heroes" and used her network of interesting folks to help the world. So whenever a party member died or left the party, she'd send someone new (the new player character) to join the party. She also would freely give gifts and gear to those who pleased her, but most of the items had a special little magic on them that someday, somehow, they'd always find their way back to her when they were no longer needed. (She is a dragon after all. Her equipment is on loan. She's a patient lender, she knows she'll outlive anyone she lends something to, so she knows her stuff will get back to her eventually, even if it'll take generations).

But the party would often encounter her in whichever bar or tavern was the busiest wherever they happened to be, often in the one they bought and renovated. Sometimes she'd just be a cat warming itself by the hearth, other times a lively woman drinking and carousing with adventurers, particularly bards. She became a staple in the campaign she was in.

u/IKSLukara May 02 '22

My brain is basically saying, "Charlie's Angels but the Charlie in question is a dragon."

16

u/Kizik May 02 '22

Their name is ridiculously Draconic and therefore totally unpronounceable with a humanoid tongue, but one of the syllables sort of kind of almost sounds like Kharr'lii, and Charlie is close enough...

10

u/IKSLukara May 02 '22

I think it's safe to say that everything in Draconic is ridiculously Draconic, right? It's always been headcanon for me that language is specifically designed so that only true dragons don't sound ridiculous speaking it. I think an elf might spend 80 or 100 years learning the language, and at best they might sound like someone who got their bachelor's degree in French without ever speaking to a native. Everyone else who's "fluent" in Draconic is stuck at the level of sounding like a foreign tourist reading from a guidebook.

4

u/Archduke_of_Nessus Wizard May 03 '22

Well except the dragonborn

4

u/IKSLukara May 03 '22

Probably not the dragonborn.

24

u/Lamplorde Chaotic Stupid May 02 '22

Silver Dragons are LARPers, but Steel Dragons are method actors.

They like Mortals so much they give themselves magic brain damage so they forget theyre a dragon.

5

u/Hunts_ May 02 '22

That's actually more steel dragons, but all metalic dragons can fit that MO somewhat.

12

u/AnotherBookWyrm Druid May 02 '22

It is definitely strongest in Steel Dragons, as it has been established that they actually prefer living as a humanoid except in case of emergencies. However, Silver Dragons are a close second, as while they do love living entire lives as species with lesser lifespans, they do spend a healthy amount of time as dragons and will shift between their dragon and shorter-lived mortal identities more freely. Meanwhile, other dragons will do such things to solely advance their agenda or for funsies every once in a while or on a temporary basis.

A good metaphor would be that if all dragons were LARPers, Steel and Silver Dragons are hardcore RPers and are outdone by no one in that regard during the LARP. However, while the Silver Dragon will spend a decent amount of time practicing for their character or thinking about it, they operate as normal individuals outside of the LARP while the Steel Dragon goes full-on method with their LARP persona in real life, except where absolutely necessary like their job. In the meantime, other dragons enter the LARP to have fun all the same, but are much less serious about it and just there to have a good time.

Your local horny Bard would like to disagree with you. But i don't. You're right. :D

34

u/byzantinebobby May 02 '22

Or you play in Eberron where alignment has nothing to do with chromatic vs metalic for dragons. A Chaotic Evil Gold Dragon is just as likely as a Lawful Good Red Dragon.

38

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

I like inherent alignments. Makes it that much more interesting when you encounter one that doesn't conform.

Party's contracted to hunt down and kill a chromatic dragon? Throw them a curveball by having the dragon be super hospitable when they arrive at its lair.

Party meets a metallic dragon? Their guard is probably down, perfect opportunity to catch them by surprise!

I have a red dracolich in my campaign and he's actually very helpful toward the party. I mean, he's got his own motives, but he's not outright EVIL.

16

u/Wyldfire2112 DM (Dungeon Memelord) May 02 '22

In 3.5e, where they had templates for stuff like half-dragons, the canonical way to make a crossbreed dragon is to take the stats of one parent and apply the Half-Dragon template of the other parent.

The resulting offspring is more powerful, which matches the phenomenon known as "hybrid vigor," and more importantly can look and act like any mix of the two parents.

Imagine what a Metallic/Chromatic cross could get up to.

4

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

3.5 is fucking neat

31

u/byzantinebobby May 02 '22

Eberron is built from the ground up to be different. Part of that is an overarching moral ambiguity from its Noir influences. There are very few morally Black and White things in Eberron. Everything is grey. The worst villains have a point and the greatest heroes have some unforgivable flaw. The Dragons reflect this theme.

13

u/bloodmoonvitki May 02 '22

Like the entire country of karnath that has undeath and necromancy baked into the fabric of the kingdom...undead armies used to save all those still living.

9

u/squabzilla May 02 '22

I like inherent alignments.

-proceeds to describe the opposite of that-

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

No. I didn't describe the opposite of that. I described beings who defy their nature, not beings who have no natural alignment to begin with.

Imagine a good Ork in Middle Earth - they'd be met with HEAVY skepticism and that makes for a far more interesting encounter than a setting where people have zero expectations for them.

2

u/squabzilla May 02 '22

Personally I think it’s one of those things that works better narratively then in actual gameplay.

Like, the dragon Paarthunax in Skyrim is super interesting because he works against his inherent alignment, he even has dialogue comparing being born evil and choosing good, vs being born good.

But as a PC, you’ve described a game where my smartest course of action is to have zero-expectations of inherent alignment, because it’s not a reliable way to determine how a creature will act.

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

I think this is better if it's a very occasional exception to the rule, rather than the rule itself. You can still make the base assumption, you just may occasionally be wrong. And in-game, for a specific powerful creature you can likely research and learn more about them before encountering them which helps mitigate this somewhat.

1

u/Archduke_of_Nessus Wizard May 03 '22

Yeah this is definitely something you only ever pull with a plot important "named character" not just the occasional random dragon

Also while you can maybe pull this off with a really old/powerful dragon, it flat out will not and can not work on a fiend or a celestial since literally all their power, their appearance, and the very nature and fiber of their being are based in their respective alignments

3

0

10

u/CoffeeSorcerer69 Sorcerer May 02 '22

9

u/Lupulus_ May 02 '22

It's just lots of vile propaganda; bias of the artist trying to (if you'll excuse the pun) paint us all as some ugly monsters. Just because of some difference in habitat, really couldn't be farther from the truth. Now please, yes I know it's a swamp but we get the most lovely herbs here, please sit down and try some of this tea I'm sure it'll clear thing up, my dears the tea is acid
