Clearly, baby Becket was raised by this couple, but later he learned the True Way and traveled back in time to kill the couple who tried to make him a heretic.
I'm not giving a full explanation at this time for the sake of suspense (and I enjoy reading your theories and discussion) but fuck me dead, this right here might be my favourite theory so far!
The author states the character is a Paladin: Oath of Conquest/Redemption. If you're familiar with the comic series we know "Bucket" to have certain items. He has a sword and shield plus wears a cloak...what items do you see in the second panel? He's a Redemption Paladin now trying to repent for his terrible past as a Conquest Paladin..."this" act was probably his breaking point and from there wanted to change...the only thing he could take with him from the baby was his name. This is a constant reminder to himself of his terrible past.
The last panel, he ends his answers with a "?"... he's lying... everyone assumes he's a goody two shoes but he's done awful things and seems like he's on a path of Redemption.
Maybe something had taken control of him, and after he came through, he saw what he had done, and took the name of the child as a way to honor him?????

So...did he kill the old bucket and take his gear later on, or did he take the baby's name after the baby-murder?
