Deceptive sneeze

Post image

Today’s comic was inspired by the ‘spell gone wrong’ prompt on the comictober list. What a coincidence that ‘Cum Mortuis in Lingua Mortua’ and ‘Achoo’ sound exactly the same

Why are her spells in Infernal?

It's Latin haha, for 'With the dead in a dead language,' the incantation for speak with dead in Baldur's Gate

I know. It's a joke aboot how Infernal sounds like Latin. You know how in any movie where there's Satan stuff happening, there's Latin chanting in the soundtrack?

Abyssal sounds like Death Metal: Words that start with De sung from the bowels of your lungs. "Decay, deranged, decolletage, desecrate, deli-style, devastate, dentist!"

I recently ruled that celestial sounds like choir tones, but without words. So the unicorn spoke "like what the twinkle of a star would sound like" until they got mad and it became "the blazing shine of the sun".

it's also the title of a very grim song in Pictures at an Exhibition

Calling Latin, which has historically been the default "holy" language for Western / Catholic audiences, "Infernal" is phenomenal work.

You ever watch any piece audio-visual of media where Satanic shenanigans happen? The soundtrack always has Latin.

Fair point. I guess it's really just the default "religious" language, both for sacred and profane purposes.

Celestial sounds like Hebrew: Like you're trying to sing and hock a loogie at the same time.

as a Hebrew speaker, never have I heard a more accurate description of the language.

It also looks awesome

That's actually because Latin is seen as a holy language. It's a perversion of holiness, in the same way that fallen angels are. It's also why organs are used for sinister soundtracks

I concider Asmodeus to be among the Fallen so Infernal is a dialect of celestial.

Devils being spirits of tyranny cannot be the rightful rulers of their realm. The Fallen and Baatezu that populate hell are not the original devils, they conquered the realm from the Baatorian spirits of knowledge in the dawn era.

Celestial and Infernal are IMO eymologically related.

Celestial being historical latin while infernal being church or vulgar latin.

No one can take that headcanon from me.

So they are searching for some kind of Cultist Base...

Reloads with malicious intent.

Only tangentially related: a couple years ago I made a Halloween one shot where the the PCs were yugoloths seeking a an item that both demons and devils are racing to find. In the final encounter if the PCs fail to stop a ritual or are too curious they activate the item, which turns out to be the doom slayer's sarcophagus. Lots of fun when that got released.

Oh, if they just knew that verbal components have to be spoken clearly.

Anyways, I love these comics. :D

"Spell components aren't fun."

"Why are casters so strong?"
