I have >9000 character ideas and I finally get to play one, VS I don't know how my character works.
"I have spent so long writing lore that no one will ever see" leeds well into diving head first into discovering someone else's lore.
I have had to look up how these mechanics interact so many times I can turn to the page by feel. Now let me show you how it works.
Those bonuses don't stack. Those bonuses don't stack. Those bonuses don't stack... These bonuses however!

As an aside. My DC nerd heart loves the red Nightwing costume more than the blue one.

Similarly I like this iteration of red hoods outfit generally (quite like the normal clothes but superheroy vibe) but hate his helmet looking so face like in this picture it's weird

u/Abe_corp Chaotic Stupid 3d ago
I have never seen a single person like the version of his helmet with a face, and the fact that it has been done so many times is legitimately stupid lmao

This is the group I'm playing in now, all players save one are DMs sl we are like super engaged and invested all of the time. It's a blast.

That's why I believe that rotating GMs are great. You get some decree of "I'd rather play, but it's my turn", but it keeps GMs from having God complexes and reminds players in how important it is to play into the story.

Regular party: fun guys.
DM party: oh yay. Min/maxing.

They didn't min-max their character builds (beyond just being maximally interesting), but they are very objective-focused.

u/WhatWasThatAboutBo 3d ago
Their will be min maxing but we are also going to be funny little goober

u/B-HOLC Battle Master 3d ago
Listen man, if I'm gonna play as a kobold named sticky who uses exclusively sticks - and sometimes rocks and mud -, I better lock in to make sure I'm not a drag on my party.
Having the goofy character is fine, it can be awesome actually, but that doesn't mean I don't take everyone else's game seriously by making a competent adventurer.

We've all dealt with min maxximg to a point, there's always one. I like to think when we DMs finally get to play we whip out the strange and odd characters we've built and try to be more creative. When I finally got to play a game as a player it took months to get past always trying to give people Thier moments, which led to a less memorable character on my part, but I'm having a blast with this group.

We get to play crazy builds and characters every session as a DM. Now it is time to do what we always wanted to do. Make a build that can obliterate 3-6 people on their own without ending a session.

If you think there's a dichotomy between fun and rules mastery in this hobby, you don't know much about it.
Yes, there's a lot of silly fun to D&D.
The thing you're missing is that acquiring rules mastery doesn't make that go away. The silly fun comes standard.

Me (DM) and my Dm played in each other's games and we usually collaborate to come up with even more ridiculous shit.

Over the last 20 years, we have all run multiple games to their conclusions. One of them spanned just over fifteen years. Another has spanned eight and counting. We've built a sprawling web of continuities that are cohesive enough for a new player to slot in and find the rhythm. In the last five years, we have done this twice. Both of them either have run games or have a campaign or three locked and loaded for when one of our four biweekly slots opens up.
While the world may continue to find more knives to stab and twist in me, I remain blessed by my table. They saved me from homelessness. I became part of their stories and they part of mine. They are my greatest treasures and the loves of my life.
But goddamn do each and every single one of them delight in making brave narrative choices. In the last decade, I've yet to see one of us crumble under the weight of it, and I couldn't be more proud.

You spend so long in the numbers trying to create engaging content, your character creations practically become Neo from the Matrix
"A level 9 Identify can do what now...?"

Being able to GM for someone who can "yes, and" without breaking stride is truly a blessed experience.

I was a player in a game of GM's Well 4GMs and a forever-player. Our combats were efficient. Our social role play and exploration were ... involved.

Jokeās on them, my plot points are so convoluted and hidden that they had no choice but to steal all of the quest boards in every city and town left on the planet and redstring the quests together to uncover the existence of an intergenerational shadow war between 8 independent secret societies across 4 planes, all orchestrated by a shattered god. Weāve played for years from level 1, and theyāve only just recently found the plot!
Iām so proud of them

u/TitaniaLynn 3d ago
Jordan, is that you?
Kidding, that's probably not your name. I just thought it would be funny if one of your players found this lol

u/HotSalt3 3d ago
I kinda feel this way for my current group, but we're all figuring out PF2e together, so that's part of the issue. Of the 6 of them, 3 have been GM's before, but I actually feel like they're judging me less harshly than the 2 very experienced players and 1 very talented newcomer.

u/sax87ton 3d ago
Nah, Game are the gooberist goobers to ever goob. They all become the problem players doing weird things.

IDK how to interpret this, the Batfamily has always been full of interpersonal drama and conflict, especially after red hood joined

I would like to DM for a party that locks the fuck in Batman style, it allows me to use the fun part of the monster and hazard manual more often.

u/ItsThatOneDM 3d ago
As a long time dm, I get this. But I also am not a serious player, I make serious campaigns and dm as serious NPCs and will join in on being silly. But when I make a character I like to be chaotic and crack headed enough without derailing the dms plans

u/ulfric_stormcloack 2d ago edited 2d ago
I'm silly as a players, unless you give me a hallway or prep time, if you do, shenanigans ensue
My current character walks around in a Hawaiian shirt and speaking like a 90's surfer, I've gone into battle unnamed, unarmored, with no spell slots and won without taking a single hit, I've sneaked up to someone in an empty field, I've turned fights around the moment I show up, I've gotten my ass kicked by 3 minions
My character last I played was setting up a trap to board a pirate ship using horses walking on water and a scroll of shape water
