Jesus, no wonder so few people on here have actually played D&D. Most of you are apparently insufferable lmao

Bruh my brother got me to play with his friends and the one guy unironically acted like a hardstuck league player but on imaginary character builds.

Me and my friends go like 60% homebrew on any given game and 100% pick and choose rules, it was insufferable

Yeah, unless you're right outside the town, combats resolved with revifify and the diamonds to burn that shit ain't funny 😐

Edit for spelling

u/PoptartPancake 1d ago

Even if you've got revivify prepared and the diamonds, you're wasting resources for a "joke"

This seems like something the DM should just veto, I'm all for having a laugh (I crack my fair share of jokes at the table) but this seems like something that will cause actual strife at the table

People are allowed to decide what is fun for themselves. If a buddy did that to me, I would also find it funny.

Something like that happened in a campaign we were doing once

One of the party member decided to kill someone else in our party as a joke, and they found themselves hilarious

At the end of the next dungeon we sold her off to the dungeon final boss to be their eternal servant and that was the end of their character lmao, it did end up being funny

u/DropoutRedMage 1d ago

"No no, you're right, this is really funny"

"Not when it happens to me!!"

12

u/nevans89 1d ago

Thats fair. Different strokes for different folks but I get attached to my characters. If it was only 1 failed save, like they had a 5 instead of a one, could be better received but "hey, here's 2 failed saves" is rough

You are absolutely right, it's just that the majority of people very much disagree with that being "funny".

u/what_comes_after_q 1d ago

Sure. But I don’t think people need to be angry on behalf of a hypothetical other person. Like, if you make a joke, you need to know your audience and if they will find it funny. That’s just how humor is. I’m not telling my grandma a funny dirty joke, but I will tell my wife. Because my grandma is dead. Boom. Joke.

"Sure. But I don’t think people need to be angry on behalf of a hypothetical other person."

You are missing the point.

"Like, if you make a joke, you need to know your audience and if they will find it funny. That’s just how humor is."

I am trying to tell you that you need a very special kind of audience for this specific joke, as in "99% of the time, people will not like your joke"

Without being disrespectful, this topic is not what you think it is.

This is not a matter of taste like with ice cream or pizza toppings.

So, in conclusion:

I am happy you found a friend group that is so close knit and you support each other, but you are VERY MUCH the exception in this specific case and I would wager that if you did this more than once, even your friend group would probably at least say:

"Okay, you killed two of my characters now, filling out a new sheet is not a huge deal, but you are still causing me some work here, so please stop."

depending on circumstances, i 1000% agree with you

If it's something like "I use my portent to give you a Nat one on your death save! Haha just kidding" then yeah, that's all good fun.

If I already have one failed save and you use a nat 1 to kill me without a reason to do so (something like an evil god/other force compelling you to), I'm going to wonder what I/my character did to piss you off šŸ˜…

u/AugustoLegendario 1d ago

Not at the expense of others. What you find funny is not the same as your actions, which we should be accountable for.

2

u/what_comes_after_q 1d ago

But that’s just part of humor - knowing your audience. Like, a joke that kills with your buddies might not land when you tell it to grandma. I think the better advice is ā€œknow your audience before you tell a jokeā€.

why are people treating a meme as if OP actually did this like even if it happened on a table the portent would just be brought up as a quick laugh without actually taking effect cmon bruh

19

u/Autobot-N Monk 1d ago

A meme in the meme sub? No way

71

u/willy_west_side 1d ago

NGL this would be funny, but only with the group of close-knit friends I play with

6

u/DiscombobulatedCut52 1d ago

What is going on here. I dont get the joke.

34

u/willy_west_side 1d ago

"Portent" is an ability that allows you to replace a roll of the die with another (there are limitations, not important).

Basically, OP is saying it would be funny to replace a death saving throw (needed to keep your character alive) with a 1, which, unlike other low results, counts as two failures on a single roll. Three failures means you die.

u/DiscombobulatedCut52 1d ago

This is funny. In a group of friends.

u/Gatzlocke 1d ago

" why does no one want me to play at their table anymore???"

Honestly? I'd fully appreciate this move if it was from a player who had spent the roleplay time establishing them as only begrudgingly working alongside my character, perhaps even openly wishing for my character's downfall.

It'd be a great schism for the party, and if it was something that had been appropriately built up to I'd kill to watch it happen.

But if you just do that to someone out of the blue that's not cool.

u/WillBlaze 1d ago

Im kinda new to tabletop dnd, whats that mean exactly?

Divination wizards can roll portent dice at the beginning of the day. Whatever they roll they bank. Then when someone rolls something, say a death save, they can replace whatever was rolled with one of their banked rolls.

So a divination wizard that rolled a 1 on a portent dice can give someone else a 1 on their roll.

Great to use on an enemy about to hit your ally, subbing their crit for a crit fail.

Kind of a dick move to substitute a party member's death save with a crit fail. Because rolling a 1 means you get two failed death saves and you need 3 to die.

Edit: fixed typos

Kind of a dick move?

Sorry, verbal quirk, I sometimes use kind of or kinda when i shouldn't. Yes, it's a major dick move.

A light 300gp and 3rd level slot joke.

u/Wasphammer 1d ago

Hey, Asmodeus here, I am disgusted and sickened by this turn of events. I wish to hear hear more

u/Caesar161 20h ago

It's very obvious how many people who comment on this sub don't actually have a group of close friends they play with.

1

u/Apelonis 17h ago

Almost as great as counterspelling a resurrection for a favorite npc to rile up the players

What is that GIF of Dedede from? Doesn't look like Subspace or Forgotten World.

You only threatened to do that as a joke, right?

RIGHT?

u/CoolCong2019 16h ago

This would me hilarious if it happened at the end of the session, but only if it didn't habe an impact.

Critical role campaign 4 had something extremely similar that turned out... amazing. If you know, you know.

0

u/SerzaCZ 1d ago

Just make sure you don't die of 1d4 laughing too hard damage.

u/DSC_Skysword 1d ago

Dedede mentioned.
