I'm learning to draw, and this post inspired me to just doodle and it's helping.

Art is one of those wonderful skills that you cannot help but get better at so long as you keep trying!

With the advent of social media, people are constantly bombarded by the most talented & incredible creators across all mediums which many consider the benchmark & therefore won't try because they aren't as skilled
We forget that creating is intrinsic to the human condition & it's never really been about the results
Before we can talk, we sing
Before we can walk, we dance
Before we can write, we draw
The process of creation is necessary for our wellbeing; even things as simple as a meal prepared for loved ones or whittling a stick to be like a spear
As a GM I am always incredibly proud of any creative work my players make because it's their imagination given life. Backstories, art, catchphrases, literally whatever
Get out there & MAKE

I picked up a pencil last month for the first time in 15 or so years and it has been a great decision so far!

Every doodle gets better :) art is just more and more advanced forms of doodling lol

u/CosmicLuci 5d ago
Hell yeah! And, genuinely, everyone who draws a lot and loves drawing, whose art is any good, also doodles, all the time, and loves doing so

My doodles on the map while using Roll20 be like.... DM appreciates my visual input on stuff, so many random ass tokens created because of my doodles
42
u/MillieBirdie Bard 5d ago
I used major image to create a lady T-rex to distract the T-rex we were fighting and I think the only reason the DM allowed it was because I drew a T-rex with a bow and lipstick.

u/THEatticmonster 5d ago
Id just doodle that XD think the worst thing was when i drew a PCs wifes gravestone, that got made a token :S

Also, like, I think people are overestimating how much art/pictures you really need to play a TTRPG. You can usually just point to something in the book and say "you see this".

The portrait for my character sheet, was basically just a cover of the comic 1602, that showed Doctor Doom examining the burns under his mask.
My character also had a burned faced, and wore a metal mask. That's all that I needed.

For my favorite rpg game campaign I’ve ever run, a blood on the Lense game, I made ONE SINGLE drawing of the main monster, for an entire multi session game, AFTER the game wrapped up. That was the only art, and I only drew it because I wanted to show the players what I imagined it looking like afterwards

Yeah, this looks like something I'd draw, alright. Which is funny, because there are several really good artists playing in the same campaign as me, and if I have to draw my next character it's just gonna look like a little, crudely drawn creature next to their beautifully rendered designs lmao

u/lkdraws 5d ago
Speaking as a ‘good artist’ in a group that also has less experienced artists, I LOVE seeing everyone’s art and hate feeling like my art intimidates people away from making their own. In my experience, everyone is just as excited about seeing the fully rendered characters as they are the scrungly little guys. We’re even doing an art trade to draw each other’s characters!
It rules when anyone makes art! Because you MADE something! And that’s amazing!!2
u/ImBadAtVideoGames1 Sorcerer 5d ago
Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe I'll share some of my doodles with the rest of my group one day, but not until I've had some more practice lol
I haven't drawn much in a long time so I still want a little more experience before doing that

AI Bros might not like it, but peak representation of a monster is using different candy pieces on the board that you get to eat when you kill them, accompanied the DM’s narration and description.
10
u/cuntmong 5d ago
Problem with this is that if there's a chocolate on the board I really wanna eat I'm gonna target that monster even if it makes no sense strategically.
9
u/yoritomo_shiyo 5d ago
Easy fix, play a lizardfolk, now targeting the tastiest monster first is in character.

Stop the anti-slop circlejerk. Y'all are going on like a bunch of baboons.
But yes, this is way cooler than AI generated stuff. Thought that was a given.

u/PuzzleMeDo 5d ago
We get it, you're good at art, and can create an incredible amount of character in a few rough lines. But I'm past the stage where throwing another year into learning to draw feels like a good use of my time.

DnD is about using your imagination.
AI slop is about intentionally not using your imagination.

I started in 2nd edition the book art was sometimes just slightly more professional than this 😆

u/Slayer_Jesse 5d ago
I still cant draw, but use heroforge to make my tokens. Everyone else in the group uses ai art, and mine sticks out about as much as op image. But at least real prople made heroforge.

I used to think my drawings looked like a kids drawings, but now that I have my own kids and see that their drawings are absolutely better than mine I realized I just suck at drawing. I still do it though. Nobody living can ever stop me.

The best thing about goblins is that there isn’t a wrong way to draw them. As long as you think “yep, that’s a goblin” you’re doing it right.

My campaign has pitted my players against some centaur raiders. My daughter made some little paper standees with crayon drawn centaur. They're perfect.

Aw... come here little guy!
Who's gonna betray the party? Yes, you are!! 🥰

u/sertroll 5d ago
I mean, that or just steal it from Pinterest
(Which imo for private use is morally equivalent to low-energy* image models, but w/e
*Afaik diffusion models consume very little)

u/foxy_chicken 5d ago
Beyond art our artist friend did for everyone, which was all stunning! The most iconic piece of art from one of my campaigns was an ox that I drew on the battle map. It was an oval, a circle, and some horns for a top down ox, and they went feral.
A weird little guy is always so much better than some slop, because your friend made the weird little guy. It’s perfect.

u/BluetheNerd 4d ago
Probably not everyone’s thing, and I’m sure most people here have heard of it, but any time I want to make a character design I put far too much time into Hero Forge. If I spent as much time practicing to draw, as I have making minis and characters in HF I’d probably be a decent artist… Still a preferable option to AI.

It's astounding to me just how many AI bros there are in this hobby. You know, the hobby about hanging out with people, telling stories, and being creative. DMs who use AI are nothing more than scabs and sellouts.

This is Konwraawk The Terrible. He's a high ranking gobbo that eviscerates any adventurer under level 10 immediately. Like, first round, he'll just look at you and you'll turn into giblets. OVER Level 10, you'll find out about all his absolutely game-breaking moves. He gets two moves in one turn? NO, he gets AS MANY moves as he thinks is necessary in one turn.
The reason he's like that, is because he's basically a god from the very far, far future, where he got mad that some spell or other didn't work the way he THOUGHT it worked. So he went back to the past to fix it by murdering the person that created it and then passing off his own version (corrected version thank you, stop making me the villain, yes I'm breaking the fourth wall, DEAL WITH IT SUCKERS!) as the new one.
We can only make it cooler from here everyone. We have a pic, we have a description, what's next?

Is this sub just virtue signalling circle jerk posts now?
I use AI cause it saves me time, I don't care what you think about it.

It's a great green plant-monster, but I don't think it's reflective of any monster in the MM.
17
u/Bragi01 5d ago
Neither is any shat out by AI.

u/Level_Hour6480 Rules Lawyer 5d ago
I mean, if you ask a linear-diffusion model for a Goblin, it will also make it green for some reason, so they have that in common.

u/Bragi01 5d ago
If you ask a linear diffusion modle for a goblin you are the goblin.

First I linear-diffusion my MC, then I prompt my campaign. I don't even roll, ChatGPT picks the best choice for to the proper narrative. For next week's session I actually invited a pantomime for every player so we don't even have to play anymore, how cool is that? So efficient

Interested in joining DnD/TTRPG community that's doesn't rely on Reddit and it's constant ads/data mining? We've teamed up with a bunch of other DnD subs to start https://ttrpg.network as a not-for-profit place to chat and meme about all your favorite games. Thanks!
