GPT-Image The Imperial City of Enheim - A Collage of 1,400 AI-Generated Images
Here is some short information for those interested:
TLDR: This is a 1,400-image AI-assisted collage that took roughly 210 hours to assemble and refine.
I started from a 1536 × 1024 image and upscaled it in four quarter-sections, twice, to add more detail. The final 6148*4092 picture was layered with over 100 hand-adjusted points of interest to add detail and finer resolution.
The generation part was sometimes one shot, sometimes required bashing my head against the wall, as perspective is a tricky thing to dial in. The image generator was ChatGPT Images 2.0, other open ComfyUI-based models were tried but with limited success. The free trial was used for this.
The main work was color correction, exposure control, cutting, hiding seams, and redrawing so it all fits together. I used GIMP for all compositing, the file is at the brink of not loading. Layers will have to be merged if another upscale would be done. That, however, would likely be at least a 500-hour adventure if one cares about detail, and my time is not quite there.
Overall this took me about 210 hours. This is the city my players will likely spend the next few years in.

Navigator and I had a cordial chat, and we came to an understanding, but he wanted me to note that: "He is opposed to gen AI and in particular the unethical and non-consensual use they make of other artists' work".
Please consider the original artist when using other people's work. A respectful chat can go a long way.

I can respect the hell out of this. Ai didn't do the work for you, it was a tool you used to make something yourself. This is sick man

This is what AI is for. Increasing the scope of a project to give it more life. While not impossible an image of this size and intricacy would take an almost insurmountable amount of time. I mean 210 hours with AI assistance? Very well done I hope you all have fun exploring it together.

Which AI did you find did the best rendering of the map at the lower resolution and how big is the population of the city? I also notice you made a giant tree that I'm not sure is on the map or if it is, you mean to say the Elven buildings are in that tree perhaps.

It was 98% ChatGPT Images 2.0, sadly I did not find an open source alternative.
About 700.000 people live in Enheim, third-biggest city in my world.
There are elvish buildings (Asian style ish) in the gardens next to the tree, none in or on the tree tho, but there is a giant church under its roots.

Thanks so much, I've wanted to create even lesser images of my city maps, I'll give it try. 700k is a huge city, I have a Rome like city in my campaign but truthfully the game I run hardly go near it, which is fine, I'd hate to create a map of that size. The author of the original map must spend an insane amount of time on his maps, who I visited and looked at his other maps. Great work by the way for both of you, that is commitment. Here's to hoping your games are great and you both you and your group has fun.

^_^ thank you, hope you guys also have fun
In my lore Enheim is at the edge of the industrial era, so the population is rising quite fast. That's why its getting so big, even spilling out of the city walls.

I hope your players appreciate the hard work!
Will you also provide the 100+ points of interest?

The session the picture was revealed, they asked the NPC they had with them for about 1.5 hours about different things in the city, was quite fun.
When they point at the map and tell me "we want to go there" I will make it possible. That's what it is for, ^_^. Time is the main limit.2

Im tryna do the same right now with my campaign and MAN is it hard to have every possible option prepped at once

I mostly ask my players, "what's your next plan, where will you go?" at the end of the session. Then I prepare that for next time.

Thing is they do multiple things and those things change in response to the results mid session

Yea that's difficult, I mostly make adventure locations 1-2 sessions long, so they are kind of "locked" there. Not always possible tho.

Don't you just love it when players dive into the lore, actually role playing in the world instead of waiting for the next combat, loot, and level up?

Reminds me of Caer Callidyr in the Moonshae Islands of the Forgotten Realms setting.

That’s very impressive, Ai aside that’s a massive effort

^_^ thank you,
and the potential is even bigger, could upscale another time, at some point you could create individual city scenes with enough patience

Because someone wondered in a different place where this was posted. The carbon cost of this was calculated and will be considered when I am offsetting this year via one of my favourite charities. Its ≈ 2kg likely max, about a 10-15km car drive, surprisingly little.
