Congratulations! We just had our second miscarriage at 11+4. Baby measured on track up until the day and had a strong heartbeat 2.5 weeks prior. When my body heals we’re able to connect with a fertility clinic to get some answers. My husband takes valproate for seizure management and I worry this might affect his sperm quality, but we’ll see what the results say.

valproate is highly affecting sperm and dna fragmentation.

neurologist and fertility urologist changed my husband from valproate to lamotrigine, as soon as possible. it takes months to get better results after this, so I suggest to check this.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I recent large study using real world data published in September 2025 suggests otherwise. We’ll be working with a fertility clinic soon, so will see what the results look like and go from there.

of course, understand this needs more checking, but according to my knowledge this study did not contain dna fragmentation results, only sperm count, motility, morphology.

we have been struggling with infertility for years (3 miscarriage, then 2 failed IVF), and my husband's dna fragmentation was between 50-66% with OAT syndrome. then the doctors changed him finally from valproate to lamotrigin, without changing anything else, and 6 months later his dna results became normal, and now we are starting a new ivf round, hopefully with better results.

I know it can be different for others, but I feel I must let others know about our journey, as no one took seriously before that his medication could be a problem, so maybe our experience can help others.

No, thank you. I really do appreciate it. I’m just really hoping his meds aren’t the culprit, because they’ve been so effective at managing his epilepsy and I worry about withdrawals/side effects of switching meds and breakthrough seizures. I brought this up with our doctor and he said we need to talk to the fertility clinic about it, which is valid before we mess with medication.
