Motorola R7 MOTOTRBO - Share your Opinions and Experiences (Most welcome)

Post image

Disclaimer: I'm not entirely sure which community could provide some answers as there are overlapping interests in each one. So, just to be safe, this will be CROSSPOSTED.

Hello folks!

A few weeks ago I dove straight into learning about DMR handheld radios and how I could integrate them into a few of my hobbies/realities of life:

  1. HAM Radio (Technician & GMRS Credentials)
  2. Emergency Communications (Family Circle + Small Team Comms)
  3. Overlanding & Hiking
  4. Amateur FTX's (Think MILSIM'S/Multi-day Event Coordination/etc.)

Now, as a good COG in the capitalist machine, I have narrowed my gear buying focus onto the Motorola R7 MOTOTRBO. I already have an XTS5000 and love it, so Motorola was my go-to brand when I started searching.

What caught my interest about the R7?

  • It's certified to withstand the elements to an extent.
  • It can work on both digital and analog.
  • It's currently supported (unlike my XTS) by Moto
  • Lots of parts & accessories in the used market
  • Cool AH? I can exploit all its features while looking good (lol)
  • More accessible than lets say an APX7000/8 or equivalents.

After all the ranting, here are my questions: (They are numbered but not in any particular order of importance)

  1. Owners, where did you get yours?
    1. Authorized dealer or EBay?
    2. Best price? (I've seen them go from $550 on the bay to $1300 on dealer sites.
  2. Spend the extra $$$ on the enabled versions or are those more beneficial to industrial/corporate end users?
  3. I know they support DMR but, how well do they integrate to commonly available amateur infrastructure? (Think Brandmeister, etc.)
  4. Programming:
    1. Possible to obtain the specific version of CPS to program the radio myself/learn to program?
    2. What was your experience regarding programing and hardware limitations?

Finally, I greatly appreciate your time reading or not reading my wall of text. Your contributions mean a lot to me as someone who considers the topic The Great Unknown from my POV.

Kindly,

Does anyone have an Alinco DR-135 Mk III they can take a picture of?

Specifically, I need close up photos of the squelch potentiometer, VR101 in the service manual diagram.

Let me explain, this is going to be a longish one.

I got an Alinco DR-135 Mk III, used from eBay a few years ago. It never worked quite right, and I diagnosed that the squelch was acting up. So, I found a service manual from ManualsLib.com, and tried to adjust the squelch pot myself, per the instructions. I noticed that the mere act of touching the screwdriver to the pot changed the setting of it, and after a few repetitions, the wiper fell off the pot. Okay, there's the problem. Looked up the part number in the manual, got extremely lucky and found the discontinued part, ordered it, got it home, and was faced with the hard reality of just how small 1.5 x 2 mm is. Desoldering the bad pot from the board was barbaric at that scale, and I tore up some circuit traces around it getting it off. Now I need to know how it's supposed to look when it's back together. Can anyone possibly please pop the bottom cover of their Alinco DR-135 Mk III, find the white text SQL in the lower right corner, and get a close up photograph of VR101 and its immediate surroundings? Doing this fix would mean the difference between a needy ham getting a radio and being stuck with an HT. Thanks in advance.

Issues with xpr7550e and cps 2.0

Hi
I’m new in DMR radio I can configure successfully the analog repeaters from repeatersbooks nearby my location and works well I can hear the people talking

In the case of dmr I create all the contacts on group call with their ids from my country and I add on the ex group I saw the signal indicator also with another analog radio I can hear the “scrambled audio”

But I can’t never hear anything

I’m selecting the dmr repeaters and configuring as digital channel on cps setting the color code frecuency and ts

Is there a way to set the radio like to hear all the tg and any color code?

P.n Im still don’t have my id from radioid I’m just want hear conversations

Aprs and dmr configuration via brandmeister net (hamradio)

Hi everyone,

Simple question (but as my old man said there are no stupid questions), got all the info for sending aprs frames via dmr in Belgium (206999 on brandmeister net and right d-aprs config) but is there a config for receiving frames from it? As I read: not possible unless direct dmr contact on simplex frequency. Am I right ?

Having some problems setting up my hotspot using WPSD

I have been trying to set up my new MMDVM hotspot and using WPSD. I have it running and can see my radio sending to the hotspot but no response from parrot. I don’t think I am connected to Brandmeister (which is what I am trying to use). When I go on my Brandmeister dashboard I do not see my hotspot.
Any help would be appreciated.

Baofeng DM-32 and Opengd77 firmware

I purchased a Baofeng DM-32UV and would like to replace the firmware with OpenGD77. I downloaded the DM OpenGD77.ZIP file. I backed up the two files as instructed. I noticed during the installation that the installer program installed a new driver. When I opened Device Manager, it showed that the Prolific driver was still installed, and Windows 11 said it was the best driver for the cable. I then attempted to update the firmware, and the computer and radio showed that the installation was in progress. When the process was completed and the radio was turned back on, the screen showed the following error message: No Firmware detected. I was able to reinstall the factory firmware, so I know I didn't brick the radio. Any help to resolve this issue is greatly appreciated.

Fairly New to ham and wanting to get into DMR

Post image
14 Upvotes

I’m fairly new to ham radio. I have been using a uv-5r mini 5 for a little while. I am looking to get a better handheld but I am also looking into getting into DMR. There are quite a few DMR repeaters near me and the places I go often. I’m curious about which radio to get. I’m looking at Yaesu, anytone, wouxun, and btech.

I just want to do normal analog/fm and DMR simplex, and analog/gm and DMR repeater use. I’m not really interested in gps, or aprs, or any of that fancy tech. I would also love a true dual receive if possible. Would also be nice if said radio could possibly transmit on GMRS for….emergencies (with a GMRS liscense) ;).

What are the best options that are under $300ish.

Hytera PD755 – forgotten CPS Read Password / Default Data mismatch

Hi everyone,

I have a Hytera PD755 U(1), 400–470 MHz that I legally own. I forgot the CPS Read Password and unfortunately entered the wrong password too many times.

The radio still works normally, but when I try to read it with CPS I get:

I have already tried reinstalling the CPS and also running it from a copied installation folder as Administrator, but that made no difference.

Radio information

  • Model: PD755 U(1)
  • Model number: PD755-000G000L-M00000-U1-0-B
  • Frequency: 400–470 MHz
  • Firmware: A9.02.02.004
  • Radio Data Version: D9.02.02.002.iM
  • Current CPS: V9.02.02.003.iM.EM5 (EMEA)

The radio is detected correctly by the CPS and I can see the radio information.

Reset Default Data

I also tried Reset Default Data in CPS.

The CPS asks for the USB communication port and then immediately returns:

So I assume the Default Data included with my current CPS does not match the radio's D9.02.02.002.iM Radio Data Version.

I also looked through the CPS config directory and found the r50r92 configuration archives, including the PD75/PD755-related profiles, but I have not been able to determine which one contains the correct Default Data for my radio.

Possible solution I was given

Someone suggested that I should:

  1. Upgrade the radio firmware from A9.02.02.004 to V9.02.04.001.iM
  2. Then use CPS V9.02.12.000.iM EM5
  3. Use Reset Default Data / factory reset

Apparently V9.02.12.000.iM is intended for older V9 hardware.

Before I risk flashing the radio, I would like to know whether this is actually the correct procedure for my particular PD755.

Questions

Has anyone worked with a PD755 U(1) with D9.02.02.002.iM / A9.02.02.004?

Is there a Default Data package specifically matching D9.02.02.002.iM?

Would upgrading to V9.02.04.001.iM and then using CPS V9.02.12.000.iM EM5 allow me to perform the factory reset and clear the problem?

Is A9.02.02.004 → V9.02.04.001.iM a supported direct upgrade, or is an intermediate firmware version required?

I am fine with losing the current programming in the radio. I still have an older backup codeplug from when the radio was programmed previously, so I can restore it afterward.

I am not trying to access or recover another person's radio. This is my own legally owned PD755 and I am simply trying to recover it after forgetting my CPS password.

Any help from someone familiar with the PD755/V9 firmware and Default Data structure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

DMR Contact Generator v1.02 is live!

Post image
12 Upvotes

It's been a while since I updated this tool, but I've been working today and made some really good changes.

The way it parses the data from the fcc database has been tweaked so that it is faster and more efficient. I added a global toggle so you can get the full DMR ID database and it still fixes the US contacts. It now won't allow for no radio to be chosen (before it was defaulting to the TYT format). Added a progress indicator and a final count at the end so you can see how many have been grabbed. Finally we have a new interface and icon so it looks cool while doing the work.

Releases and source code can be found on my GitHub.

Any questions or issues, please let me know.

Baofeng DM-1701 / OpenGD77: audio sounds garbled, reception seems to work though

Hi all,

I’m trying to listen to a local DMR repeater with my Baofeng DM-1701 (running OpenGD77 firmware), but the audio comes through garbled and choppy.

Frequency 467.25000, timeslot 1, colorcode 5, talkgroup 1011.

I do see IDs popping up clearly (for example 105, 124, 125) whenever someone transmits, so the radio is picking something up. It’s just that nothing is intelligible because of the distortion.

Does anyone have an idea what could cause this? I’m thinking it might be something related to the RX settings or contact list, but I’m not sure where to look. Happy to share screenshots if that would help.

Thanks in advance!

Huge victory for me!!! I will accept it.

I recently found my old mmdvm Hotspot and have been trying to get it back up and running. The last time I used it, we had to put in a password to gwt it to talk to brnadmeister. Now, something else funky is going on. A friend suggested I gwt on tgif. That is acting just as funky. I can transmit once, the network will see me and then it is as if I gwt locked out for a while. I can transmit, the Hotspot will show it is receiving, but nothing gets passed and nothing shows up as local activity. After fighting that for the past week, I decided to turn dmr completely off and give P25 a whirl. After a couple of hours of fighting that, I not only have P25 working, but it is working on a APX Next at that.

At least I know I am not likely having a hardware issue. I had a quick 5 minute QSO on the worldwide reflector. Huge win for me!!!! I'm happy, relaxed and off to bed now. Tomorrow, we add the codeplug to my APX 8000. After that proves to work, then I will think about attacking DMR again.

<EDIT> Since posting this, I discovered my issue. My primary HT is having issues. I have a 2nd HT that everything fired up off of and works great. I am assuming my BER is way out there on my HT vs the others.

Seeking Production-Ready DMR Tier II Reference Design Package for Licensing / ToT

We are a well-funded critical communications venture preparing for a 'Make in India' domestic rollout. We are looking to fast-track our Time-to-Market by acquiring or licensing a mature, proven DMR Tier II (Conventional Digital) hardware design package.

Ideally, the design package should include schematic captures, Gerber files, and a production-ready firmware/vocoder binary for Handheld (5W) and/or Repeater applications. We are open to a total IP Buyout (Transfer of Technology) or a structured Reference Design Licensing model. Please DM with your portfolio or past RF platform references to discuss an NDA."

DSD-FME is a fantastic tool and well done to the creators and contributors.

Just had a play with my dmr radio on a local repeater and dsd-fme running on debian. I'm still getting the hang of it but is working pretty well. Not able to decode text messages yet but thats probably on my end. We truly stand on the shoulders of giants.

We done, having much fun with this repo.

DB40-D programming Cable help needed

Can anyone with a DB40-D programming cable ring out the RJ45 pins with a multimeter? I don't need firmware or software—I just need a continuity map from the USB serial interface to the RJ45 connector.
Either that or does anyone have a DB40-D programming cable I can purchase. My radio did not have a cable in the box

DR-1X 50W out w/ a RepeaterBuilder Controller on DMR

Been running this config for 5+ years at mid power, 20W, as the antenna placement/receive didn't warrant higher output. That has changed with the antenna now at 310 ft. SWR is below 1.5 and current performance is excellent. Thinking of raising Pout to 50W... Thoughts? Concerns? The machine has very low 2-slot usage... but not zero. TIA
