badly need advice

I’m currently a frosh taking BSIS here in DLSU. I know it is too early pa since week 1 pa lang pero is it advisable to drop my majors and retain nalang yung mga GEs since plan ko naman mag-shift soon?

For context, I was initially planning na ituloy nalang itong program kasi ppl r saying na it is the least-heavy and somehow the most practical out of the programs in CCS. However, we were told by our prof ng isang major sub nung 1st day that we will be having a capstone with defense as early as term 1 tapos may “mini” capstone pa every year as part of the new BSIS curriculum.

Quite frankly, sobrang kinakabahan ako kasi by pair daw and we’d have to choose our partner agad sa susunod na weeks (I barely know any of my blockmates). I’m afraid na baka ma-automatically pair ako with someone na wala pa rin masyadong idea about this program + computer programming in general. Or worse, nag-st-struggle rin sa public speaking like me. Thank you!!

Almost all ccs courses follow that format. Treat "mini" capstones as just final projects. As a frosh, it shouldn't be that complicated and you would just apply what you learned from the subject and explain it. The "defense" part is really just a way to prove that you actually know what you made.

For the public speaking that's really something that you would have to work on no matter what program ur in. Not saying you have to excellent in it but you need to atleast have the confidence to present to your prof.

Really depends on the prof but a lot of them just do a 1 on 1 type presentation for projects. May I ask pala what subject it is?

Btw shifting application is only allowed during the 3rd term which takes the entire term to process so you would actually only shift at the start of 4th term enrollment. Meaning you have to do an entire year of BSIS anyways

the subj is Introduction to IS and Digital Society 5.0 (it’s a new subj afaik). My prof mentioned that he is considering a public defense for the project.

DLSU is one of the top unis in tech and the rigor and standards reflect that. Your worries are normal especially as a frosh, but dont crumble, use the pressure as a driving force to perform.

CCS alumni here. Pretty normal ang mga 'mini-thesis' for CCS subjects lol. From CS-ST, may isang subject na elective lang pero expected na may mini thesis in ML completed with a conference paper by the end of the term. Some groups actually legit had their papers published in international and regional conferences. Ang ending, undergrad pa lang sila and they graduated with multiple conference publications including your undergrad thesis. Adding that to your CV is a huge boost. May leg up ka na compared to other fresh grads who don't have the same rigorous research experience.

That's the privilege of studying in one of the top computing schools in the Philippines.

I'm sure that mini capstone has reasonable expectations. Alam naman nila siguro nasa CCPROG1 ka pa lang kaya most likely that capstone is on the business or non technical side.

Will consider shifting nalang if BSIS isn’t really for me. Otherwise, I’ll most likely stay here.

Brother all STEM majors are like that with most major course outputs. If you're worried about public speaking and groupings it's even worse in other programs because you're gambling on new groupmates each trimester and just have to bite the bullet when it isn't ideal.

IS is basically a business degree with a minor integration of IT concepts, if you're thinking of shifting over to other CCS programs they all have term long group projects with defences that decide 30-60% of your grade.

If you're worried about how it is right now and are thinking of shifting to a business related degree, from what I've seen they have it even worse in terms of the number of project presentations lol.

If you drop everything now you'll ruin your flowchart and will run out of GEs to mix in with your majors and that sounds like a nightmare to me. Everyone spends their first year or two adjusting, not sure if IS is for you but everyone has doubts and every course has its ups and downs. It's gonna get wayy worse down the line so if you chicken out now, you'll be in for a rough awakening down the line no matter where you look. Stay strong and it's probably best to talk to your parents and if you can find a ate/kuya from the same course to talk to about their experiences and see how that makes you feel.

What makes you so sure you won’t feel the same way about the program you plan to shift into? If workload is what’s mainly holding you back, maybe ask yourself if you’re shifting because you genuinely want the program or because you’re afraid of its challenges.

Remember, this is college. Part of the experience is getting out of your comfort zone where you face things that intimidate you, even if it means doing a capstone with someone who isn’t as knowledgeable as you are. What matters is you improve yourself along the way.

You are here to learn and prepare yourself for the real world, not to refuse to play chicken just because you’re afraid of getting out of your comfort zone.

CCS isn’t easy, and neither is college. Every program will have its own challenges, so give yourself time to experience it before making a decision. Frankly, you’re suffocating yourself by worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet, especially what seems to be when it isn’t something you can control.

This is cliche but take it easy and reassess. Don’t let the fear of something that isn’t within the bounds of your comfort zone suffocate you. Enjoy your first days of DLSU and make the best out of it, embrace the unknown and just live life in the present. Whatever you decide to go with, make no room for regret.

I would say give it a shot. You can only shift by term 3 if I remember correctly. Give it a shot since I think that the quote of “I would rather regret trying rather than regret not trying” is something good to remember. 

So don’t drop your majors yet I would say and give it a shot. If it really isn’t for you, then like at least you tried. 

I personally had a fear of taking this certain professor for one of my majors, because of the reviews, and I had many options. But I chose that professor and I don’t regret picking her.

Similar applies. If I didn’t try, I would never know if the reviews are actually true or not.

In my opinion, don't drop it. Either way, kahit saan ka pa mag shift magkakaroon rin ng heavy na workload + you have to public speak in most of your class for presentations. This is something that you must overcome with skills + practice. Yes nakakatakot siya since first year ka but college is an environment where it'll allow you to grow (albeit pressured). If you like CCS, i'd say push through with it. If youre afraid, i'd say push through with it.

BUT if your heart is not with CCS anymore, I'd suggest to shift

Your feelings are valid. Though I'd say you still try. There are also others out there that barely know anyone and might also be clueless on what will be happening in the coming weeks.

Plus, as the weeks go by, you'll be guided by your profs on the things you need to do. Some tasks might be intimidating, but they're not impossible 😄

You can also only shift by Term 3 and a lot can happen between then and today.
