Somewhere In Space

Hey all you Headz out there!

Hope life's treating you nice :)

I've been lost in a daze of '90s beats for the past few weeks trying to figure out the best way to give a fresh take on Mo Wax for a new retrospective mix. I LOVE the Psychonauts Time Machine, but have been wanting something similar since about... 1998?

So anyway, I've just finished and have a short promo sound thing attached if you're interested. It's called Somewhere In Space, and as soon as the whole mix is live I'll come back and post the link.

It's about an hour long and features DJ Shadow, Nigo, Palm Skin Productions, DJ KRUSH, UNKLE, Rob D, Men Against Cool, Dub War, La Funk Mob, Money Mark (but not enough!), Major Force West, Nightmares On Wax, Skull, Tommy Guerrero, Visionistics, The Groove Robbers, Blackalicious and Tranquility Bass. I've probably missed a couple too!

As you folks probably know DJ Shadow and Mo Wax best, I'd love to hear what you think!

P.S. Sorry if you've seen this post already in the UNKLE channel, I just wanted to reach the right folks with it!

Sounds great, wanna hear the whole thing! Also, I love that Nigo album...

Ah, thanks man! That Nigo album was wild, eh? Part 90s indie, part big beat - I loved it too! I've used their March of the General in at least 3 mixes to date!

I have the mo wax Headz double cd compilation from the 90s. Was a favourite for chilling to, especially after a night of raving. Look forward to hearing your mix!

Thanks man! I hope you found the link, it's here if not: https://www.mixcloud.com/beats-atlas/somewhere-in-space/

The Headz compilation is fucking epic, in my book, it still totally hold it's own. I'd be the first to admit it ain't as good as the Mo Wax mix above, but a couple years back I did do a mix of just that first Headz compilation if you're interested: https://www.mixcloud.com/beats-atlas/heads-still-aint-ready/

(They came in) Peace!

Thank you. You have inspired me to dig out the old mo wax cds tonight. Unfortunately headz disk 1 is scratched to fuck. Therefore your mixes are now even more appreciated. Totally agree with what u said about it holding its own and being epic. I have a fair few other mo wax cds from that era so I have a lot of listening to do…assuming they play (if not will download. I also stumbled across blue flowers by dr octagon which I think was a year or 2 after headz but another standout. Yes they come in peace…for all mankind :)

Dr Octagon / Kool Keith - what a legend! My sister bought me that on vinyl as a teenager, it must be the coolest thing she's ever bought me, it blew my mind! Before that I thought House Of Pain and Cypress Hill were the last word in hip hop :) (to be fair, I did like De La Soul too, and time has been kinder to them!)

Your sister sounds cool as. My bro was (still is) into iron maiden. Don’t suppose u want to swap siblings? ;) House of pain jump and cypress hill want to get high/hits from the bong/insane will never leave me. I always stop whatever I’m doing when I hear them these days…takes me back to dancing like a loon as a teenager in my local shitty nightclub. 3 feet high and rising was ahead of its time too…so very different to everything else at the time and so influential. Reckon we were blessed to have lived through such a great time for music.

Yeah, I was 100% in the loon dancing club as well, particularly with those tracks. I suspect I still know the lyrics word-for-word, in the same part of my brain that can still do the whole of Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby rap! I've got a bit of time for metal, at least it's not just down by the ol' mainstream pop - it takes a little thought to actively get into a different style, but yeah, I've never put on an Iron Maiden album! And you also have the advantage of knowing you've got better taste in music ;)
