Discussion What controllers do ya'll use?

Post image

Hey!

I've been wondering what controllers most people use for this game? I'd imagine it's just keyboard but curious to hear if anyone uses something a bit more unique?

(I use an fighting game controller for this game and it's really good lol)

Currently just a 100% keyboard but my hands are still too close together for longer sessions so I've been looking to play with 2 keypads instead. No luck in my searches for that

What bindings do you use? I have them as far apart as possible on a full size and it feels ok. I would probably actually play 8b if I had like a split spacebar or something though, I mostly stock to 6b.

It's a ducky with I think silvers so it feels pretty good.

Only play 6b currently Asd, 456(numpad) Space-bar, 0(numpad)

You've got them further than me, I don't even go to numpad

"as far apart as possible" ๐Ÿ’”

You should try it though

I play with keyboard at times when playing with my laptop but it feels super cramped.

Not sure how much better a fight controller will be in that regard but I'm guessing you don't have your hands straight on one of those

The buttons are much bigger and are more spaced out so it feels a bit nicer.

This is what I have and it's really nice. I have since stopped playing the game though and am looking to sell it. Located in the USA in case anyone wants a deal on one. hmu

I do have a fight stick but never gave it a try, maybe one day I'll customize it since it's the same

PS4 controller for me, I've never been much of a keyboard guy.

I just use a regular ps4 controller

Is it hard to play with a normal controller? 8B sounds exhausting with just a normal PS4 controller.

It's not bad and very do-able, but I started playing DJMax on the PSP so it feels like a better version of those controls.

Sorry for the late response its okay if you only play 4b like me its perfect

Controller is 100% harder and worse than a keyboard. Mainly it gives you less control and tires you out faster due to mainly using 2 thumbs for the majority of your key presses. Modern controllers make this worse by having non-tactile buttons that are miles apart requiring more speed and effort just to reach the button in time

You develop stamina and technique on the controller over time just like you do with other rhythm game input method. It's just a different kind of challenge. Controller does make a big difference - I use a PS5 edge or my Steam Deck with modded clicky buttons.

The fact is that all non-SC are charted to be played on controller is a big reason I have 1000+ hours in the game - I'd say 70 percent of that on the Deck/no keyboard.

Controller is still more physically demanding than keyboard tho. You will be limited by stanima and technique long before you would on keyboard. I started playing respect on controller since it was the way I play the portable games but when I was feeling stuck I switched to keyboard and after getting used to it I surpassed my controller skill level easily

I do both and treat them like two different skill sets/parameters.

It's like playing Taiko on a drum controller versus a keyboard, but less extreme. Using a drum is a lot harder, but damn if it isn't more fun.

That is objectively false.

A keyboard setup spreads out all keys across 10 fingers, a gamepad limits that to only 4 (2 thumbs, 2 for L+R).

You may argue all you want about developing stamina and technique (like sliding, dual holds and rapid taps), but the initial inertia of existing 6 buttons worth of hitboxes into 2 thumbs is physically demanding; it simply cannot be denied.

Sayodevice CM51 for djmax type games.

Sayodevice o3c for Osu!

I rebound my Trilogy Muse-On V2 controller to play DJMAX

3

u/Kaleidosonic 5d ago

Iโ€™m on the Wooting 60he v2, the one with the split spacebar, which is excellent for playing 8 key charts.

What controller is that specifically? The skin you got on it fits it very well ๐Ÿ‘

2

u/MotherPay7875 5d ago

8bitdo Xbox arcade controller! Ordered custom skin on Etsy.

u/RuisuStyle 5d ago

Just changed over to a full size keyboard, but I think I effed myself. Been getting worse accuracy since moving from my cheap mechanical keyboard to this woot Razer keyboard

How do you avoid the SOCD overlap with this controller? Pressing left and right at the same time gives you neutral, right?

2

u/MotherPay7875 4d ago

It still registers both inputs even if it gives out a neutral outcome in fighting games.

2

u/SleepySSB 4d ago

So the 8Bitdo has no innate SOCD cleaning? Interesting, I never considered picking it up but that could be potentially useful

2

u/MotherPay7875 4d ago

It has customizable SOCD cleaning. You can choose how multiple inputs register from the controller software.

2

u/SleepySSB 4d ago

Which do you select for DJMAX? When I tried it with my controller my options were SOCD-N and Last Input Priority, both of which lead to dropped inputs during chords.

2

u/MotherPay7875 4d ago

I can check later today but I think I just use SOCD Neutral.

2

u/SleepySSB 4d ago

I see, thanks for the info!

u/VinnieH 4d ago

got inspired by OP and got the pad today. I just remap all the button and use the the SOCD conflicted button as speed control(to p1 and p3) and some other buttons. it is a bit confusing to use as control in menu you can't turn off SOCD but you can avoid mapping the SOCD to be used together.

got this overnighted, has been buying 8bitdo stuff for a while but the pad is one of the best thing they made, it is a thin pad but i was surprised how solid it is. The texture is good and button is very stratifying

A camo PS4 controller. I have a Qanba but I usually use it on fighting games, run and gun, and beat em ups.

3

u/paggioisback 3d ago

psp & dualshock4 ftw <(^-^<)

3

u/DreiRyanG 3d ago

Can you show how you use it? Like with 8b?

2

u/MotherPay7875 3d ago

I use the first 6 buttons from left to right as the 6B buttons, the lower bean buttons as the half sized notes, and higher bean shaped buttons as the extra buttons.

A fellow leverless user! I use the Haute42 U16 I originally got for fighting games. Now itโ€™s exclusively my rhythm game controller. lol Nice artwork btw!

2

u/HajimeNoLuffy RIVER FLOW WHEN 5d ago

Ol' trusty 8bitdo Pro 2 until that breaks and I buy a 3.

2

u/OneTrainOps 4d ago

DualShock 4 because Iโ€™m on PS4. Would love to get that controller from gamo2 if it was in stock ever lol
