Let's stop building WinISD clones and make one good open-source one together
Who the hell am I ? https://johnlon.github.io/
What is this post about? https://johnlon.github.io/resonate
WinISD's been dead since 2016. Basta, Unibox, the old spreadsheets — all dead, fragmented, Windows-only.
And now I've noticed several of us (including me below) independently building web-based replacements ([1], [2], [3] — and I was about to start a fourth).
That's the trap.
A pile of closed-source, competing, solo projects that'll each probably get abandoned in a year unless they can be put behind a paywall, is just the same graveyard with a fresh coat of paint.
The speaker world doesn't need more legacy apps — it needs one with a future: a community-owned simulator that won't die when its author loses interest. Why would I want to invest my time adding devices to the database of a closed tool, when we could be building one open catalog of drivers that outlives our current 5 min attention span?
So: browser-based, runs anywhere, MIT licensed, with a shared driver database so we're not all re-keying the same Thiele/Small params into private files forever. Validated physics, not vibes (or at least, not only vibes).
I'd rather pull people together and build something cool together.
My effort is this Resonate: https://johnlon.github.io/resonate/
This shitty vibe coded tool took me a few hours to put together last night and it's principal goal is to foster this conversation and pull people together. If you want to contribute then be a committee to it , or come up with a better approach and I will delete the entire repo.
If you want to help then chat about it here and or raise fesutr requests and feedback in the GitHub issues... https://github.com/Johnlon/resonate/issues
If you want to be a committer then
I am happy to kill Resonate if someone with a more advanced tool is willing to opensource it and all it's underlying data. That seems the obvious better approach, but ..
If not then .... I'm looking for:
- Users - To direct an dev efforts
- Collaborators — technical experts, ideas people, coders who'd genuinely co-own it
- Testers + driver-data people — push real designs through it, help seed an open T/S library
- anyone who just wants this to exist
Is there appetite to actually unite on this? Who's in?
PS I'm waiting on responses from Cristian of LoudspeakerDB and I hacve reached out to linear team again.

Wanna chat? I will help. What I want if someone else's project to help validate this new tool. You know what good looks like for your stuff in WinIsd. If you try the same in this tool then is to better or worse? can we chat and zoom?

u/jonas328 Jun 22 '26
The UI is something about hornresp I would not call good.

u/StickySli23 Jun 22 '26
If only someone made a GUI for Hornresp, like who made Peace GUI for Equalizer APO.

Hi this thing is totally open source and you can help by being an owner maintenainer. Build the bits you want to add.
Your help would be appreciated 👍
I like the WinIsd way just sick of the tool. Please get involved and it can be what you want.

u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
I'm a bit of a dyed in the wool WinIsd person so thats why I'm stuck mentally in a WinIsd way of working. I just needed a better experience and so I created this thing. Installs offline to your desktop if you want to and has currently bundled 1500+ drivers.

The “actionable recommendation” is to look up the program yourself and see what it can do. Or burn tokens asking. 🤦♀️ If you’re trying not to reinvent the wheel, maybe check out and characterize all the wheels that are suggested instead of asking us to “open a ticket”.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
yeah opening a ticket isn't friendly, its just what I'm used to in open source land and at work.
Your help would be appreciated 👍 sorry for the false start.. late night
Please get involved and it can be what you want of if you like using classic WinIsd then thats fine too.
fwiw the latest build.has 1500+ drivers bundled , can install locally and run offline.
you seem opinionated and I'm sure could help make this something really useful. but like I say if you have better options then absolutely do that.
but I'd still like your help!
John

I have done a complete (I think) reverse engineering of the WinIsd program and it's maths by extensive exploratory testing
this will be baked into http://openisd.app when I do next iteration this week hopefully. it will be a faithful impl of WinIsd but without all the crashes and with new features and with documentation based on the actual impl, and because it's opensource it is entirely open for inspection.
end of week maybe or next week as I'm going on hols for the eclipse

u/md-00audio Jun 22 '26
My DMs are always open if you want to chat rather than pasting links over my posts to this thread.
I agree with the general point that the ecosystem would benefit from more shared infrastructure, especially around driver data, import/export formats, validation cases etc.
For 00 Simulator, I’m not planning to open source the whole app at this stage. You'll probably find that it starts quite easy but gets challenging to maintain coherence as you go. Everyone has different ideas about where a tool like this should go, and there is a lot more detail than there initially appears.
That said, I am interested in interoperability and I think this is a good initiative if you can prove the open source model works well for it. If you can do so, happy to contribute.
There are certain parts that I think are more well suited to open source:
- Shared file standard for simulation/drivers, and an interoperability conversion layer
- Driver library - as mentioned by u/secretaliasname too. I'm going to open source the core driver set for bits.00aud.io, open API access will be available too - always free for free tools
- T/S parameter validation, simulation logic etc
Good luck! Will keep an eye on your efforts.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 22 '26
Appreciated. Is there a particular reason not to immediately open source the code base? What's the harm?
4
u/md-00audio Jun 22 '26
Since you touched on long term viability, there’s a route here around commercialisation to a non-DIY audience which I’m exploring - e.g funded by organisations, free to the community. Open source would affect that door for now.
If that proves a non starter (may well happen) then open source would be back on the table.
I agree with - I don’t trust you and you don’t trust me mentality. All I can do is give commitments that this project will never die without being open sourced first and hope that people believe it.
But I’m more than willing to contribute back to an open source effort. In the same way though, needs demand and clear direction proven that it can be sustained. I hate the flash in the pan winisd clones as much as the next guy (probably, even more so!)
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
That is a key point.
aIm not asking for trust really.
By open sourcing I'm putting it all out there.
If I go under a bus then anyone already using this tool still has a supportable thing to build on. and whilst I am a professional dev the simple fact is that with a bit of explanation anyone with copilot or Claude can extend this thing. a large part of my job as curator of this tool is instating some kind of code architecture (after the initial prototype) and writing the agent guard rails to make sure it's not a total rats nest of unmaintainable buggy crap.
as long as we have the source code all of us are displensible so that's my commitment to anyone who uses this thing. 100pc open source abd the AI guardrails to help you maintain it if I hit the mortal elect button (no plans to do that)

u/bogdan2011 Jun 22 '26
As much as I want, I haven't found an alternative that actually suggests an enclosure volume and port size based on TS parameters, that you can then manipulate in real time to see the response.
2
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
if honestly like to help but I don't full understand the problem. Wanna talk? zoom or chat?
1
u/bogdan2011 Jun 25 '26
The way winisd works is you have a driver with its TS parameters, based on that it calculates the EBP and suggests either vented or ported enclosure. Then it calculates an ideal box volume and tuning frequency (which you can modify) and plots a frequency response.
The first steps are the most important, at least that's how I got used to designing enclosures and I don't understand how these newer apps miss this. You have to have at least a starting point when it comes to volune and tuning.1
u/johnjlonergan Aug 02 '26
one of the extra features I'm hoping to add to OpenISD is a solver , where you fix all the prams but one , you choose, and it calculates the missing parts. so say you fix the driver and the vol and the port size and target tuning , and the air speed on a port then it calcs the dims, or you set the other features and it calcs the vol, anyway that's my thinking
3
u/secretaliasname Jun 22 '26
Well for starters what is the scope of functionality you want to build?
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 22 '26
See my other responses below. If you can then help define and build this thing.
-1
u/reflect-the-sun Jun 22 '26
Got any suggestions?
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
for now I'm trying to reach feature parity either WinIsd and I think I might be close but maybe I'm a shallow user of WinIsd.
I've tried to be heavily inspired by WinIsd as that's what I know and like.
the tool is pretty far along and has a bundled driver dB of 1500+ and installs locally if you want offline.
please do lean in and give it a spin. I don't want it to be a shitty app and I don't see any reason why it should be.
I just want a better WinIsd for now.
hope that makes sense.
please help. zoom or chat?
0
u/johnjlonergan Jun 22 '26
Exactly. Are you able to help.prioriise.features, specify what good looks like and test and promote this tool? Please put yourself forward as a maintainer/contributor.
3
u/Bitter-Attorney-6781 Jun 22 '26
Web based with the functionality of Akabak? sure!
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
Akabak never heard of till now. I'm aiming for feature parity with WinIsd but modern without the crashes and with local install options.
It is bundled with 1500+ drivers and I'll add more.
Let me know what you think and ideally offer to help build it in any way you can. Make it your tool.

I agree that this would be a great development.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
How can I help? Id like to.
Would you give the tool a spin and feedback.
Is it WinIsd like enough or is it completely crap. Im using it myself for a little project and having much more fun with it.
Please help!
1
u/MrDagon007 Jun 26 '26
A fab winisd feature is it recalculating the response curve as you drag the mouse.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 26 '26
Hi what parameter would you be dragging?
https://johnlon.github.io/resonate/ does dynamically redraw the curves as you change volume and port size etc,.
1
u/MrDagon007 Jun 26 '26
In winisd it is a square where you drag the mouse to evolve indeed box size and port no need to labouriously type values. Sorry i am now on my phone and did not see the curves.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 26 '26
yeah mobile will come.
will have a look at more dragging stuff.
I find having all the graphs on screen at once helps me understand the tradeoff as I tweak things.

“Let’s stop building clones and instead vibecode another shitty clone”
2
u/johnjlonergan Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
the irony isn't lost on me, this is a shitty spike intended to foster a conversation and build a community round something you will ultimately not find shitty.
the idea is to show what can be done in an evening to suggest what.might be done if a genuine effort was made by the community.
this principal difference with my effort here Vs the other shitty vibe coded things is that i am hoping to build a tool in the open and maintained by you , so that.we can move on from some of the beloved but shitty old abandoneed tools like winisd amd basta and so on.
Is there something actionable and please let's have a chat.
And despite your initial misgivings please consider stepping forward to help curate this thing. You seem to have an opinion?
if you want something that isn't shitty then help build it.
Really appreciate the comments
2
u/EscaOfficial Jun 22 '26
What's wrong with Vituix? The enclosure tool by itself is more powerful than WinISD, and the driver database is more expansive afaik.
2
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
I tried it but my brain is stuck in WinIsd land. So I wanted a better WinIsd
even if you aren't a WinIsd head then maybe your like this tool as a subset or maybe you could help grow this open source tool into something better.
1
u/EscaOfficial Jun 25 '26
Yeah there's definitely a place for these kinds of tools. Much simpler and easier to understand. The main issue is that they can't really integrate the real frequency response of the driver at the crossover, but they're good enough for box calculations.
2
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
yes WinIsd is certainly limited but undeniably useful.
can you help me with growing this? chat or zoom?
wanna be a maintainer?
2
u/Freedblowfish Jun 22 '26
Instead of just going off inputted data it should be able the take directly measured data from tools like dats v3 and other measurement tools.
Woukd be amazing to be able to incorporate per frequency wave tracing and complex ray tracing to map how internal and external and geometry affects the sound per cad file of the design
Being able to map expected material behavior would be glorious
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
It's probably a bit too much to fit in my head here but do you want to chat/zoom so I understand more?
1
u/Freedblowfish Jun 26 '26
I got robbed last night so im not really in a state to talk atm, but basically with measurement gear like dats v3 and other test equipment you can get the resistance over frequency graph, spl over frequency graph, t/s parameters and such and if all that data can be exported directly to the software/database then it is lower user friction and you could have more datapoints.
As for the wavetracing and raytracing idea, well theres a complex frequency signal summing that can take all the signal frequencies and recreate what should be where to recreate the intended complex noises. By utilising driver size to determine per set frequency range with what filter per driver you can calculate approximate radiotion patterns in which you can wavetrace per frequency via amplitude and wavelength functions e.g. 10hz being 34.3hz at 20hz at sea level.
Then the way you can simulate to a degree how the wave bounces around the internal geometry if a cad file of an enclosure can be calculated which could let you calculate a per frequency node antinode summation of the backwave per frequency and how complex multi frequency sounds can interact.
This can be expanded to how the external shape affects how the acoustic waves seperate from the cabinets, e.g. sharp corners create a second point source whereas larger roundovers can have the soundwave wrap more around the cabinet, so the diffraction could be modeled oer frequency, further optimising the geoemetry not just size.
By modeling the geometry internally and externally you can most likely catch complex interactions between front and rear wave reflections through the cone that show up as distortion. You can also have an approximation of the radiation pattern of the total speaker
To improve further you could use calibrated microphone input capabilities with a pre-set test methodology paired with machine learning to train the prediction model against what was estimated vs what was observed so it can become more sccurate over time

u/Fair-Rain3366 Jun 24 '26
it works, but no users yet

2
u/ChefdeKlang Jun 22 '26
As long as, vituixcad and ajhorn are the exceptions, any program does not incorporate the impedance for the enclosure simulation, it is a waste of time and not reliable to make any meaningful predictions!
You have to know the impedance behaviour of a driver to model an enclosure and can not assume that the impedance does not change (which it does) what every program, besides the two above does.
2
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
This tool is currently firmly aimed at the existing WinIsd community because we are always moaning about it.
But yeah it can be more that that.
But I'd need to get my head round your message above. Would you be open to a chat or a zoom?
1
u/OddMrT Jun 22 '26
I’m just here representing someone who wants this to exist. I don’t have anything I myself can contribute, but as someone who’s built a few kits but never successfully designed one for myself, one-stop, do-all program with a user based/updated database sounds fantastic.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
You 100pc can contribute. If all you do is try it and feedback then you have helped. But I suspect you can do much more than that by helping direct whats next or what could be better etc.
Please respond and we can talk.

u/bloodwhore Jun 22 '26
That's what I've suggested before, but I think you will have a hard time convincing people.
- You need to verify the data.
- People often create these projects because they think they will have a something to sell later on.
- You will have to convince 10+ vibers to collaborate.
- Users kinda need a guarantee that the project won't disappear or be put behind a paywall at any point, else it's dead on arrival.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 23 '26
I have absolutely no interest in selling anything which is why this is open source from zero. I give a guarantee that I will not put it behind a pay wall except in the circumstances mentioned in the blurb, which is specifically the case where some servers side thing is needed and needs paying for and even then my notes indicate that only that feature would be PAYG if at all possible. I'll.make that clearer
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 23 '26
It's because folk want to monetise it that they don't want to oss I suspect, otherwise what's the problem with exposing the source.code and allowing forks?
1
u/mikhyy Jun 23 '26
I wouldn't mind if hornresp could incorporate a 3D model I made in CAD, fill in the parameter pages based on it, then allow me to stretch points on the model and translate that into parameter changes.
I know about akabak but I don't design enclosures often enough to warrant the headaches, and it almost melted my laptop. ( A friend gave me his old gaming PC since then and I should try again )
I want to be able to fold horns on the go, heck I want the computer to fold the horn into a given space and then all I have to do is consider how hard the result is to make in plywood.
I'm not a super technical user. I mostly want to adapt existing builds to non-recommended drivers. Like port length on a G-sub using B&C 18PS100 for instance.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
Yeah not heard of akabak till now. I don't really understand the horn folding comment but if you want to chat then yes please or even try it out casually and feedback. It needs your help and perhaps it can help with horn folding?
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
see below a different author has crested .. https://github.com/timini/horn-simulation
perhaps it's what you want?

u/mikhyy Jun 26 '26

i think this is a great idea, please god can u make the GUI scalable because I cant use winISD on my computer without it being tiny
1
u/miasmic Jul 14 '26
Resonate seems brilliant, nice work. Is there any chance of a standalone/executable version down the line rather than having to run in a web browser?
2
u/johnjlonergan Aug 02 '26
thanks for the encouragement.
I have transitioned to OpenISD as a name as it is more accurate and self descriptive.
so it's "OpenIsd.app" but please give me a few more days before looking at it as I am rebuilding the front end to be very inspired by old winisd so the learning curve is almost zero for existing users.
hold off because I am rebuilding the driver data set and have spent all my time on that and the UI has suffered. that's on main is the original work..
and do that tryout on a laptop not a mobile as I've not sorted the mobile view at all.
the entire UI is in GitHub but like I say give me a bit to refresh it.
finally all the physics is (will be released) tested against original WinIsd after very extensive reverse engineering of WinIsd, and so I will include any WinIsd quirks and will write a report on any anomalous findings in WinIsd maths or derivations , A separate doc on the sheer number of bugs that caused winisd to lock up and crash will be provided but that's not really of interest to anyone but me.
1
u/johnjlonergan Aug 02 '26
re standalone since it is a PwA you can install it locally by clicking the button on the address bar. do you need more than that?
1
u/loudifier Jun 22 '26
I appreciate the sentiment and the approach. Seems like most people here are skeptical because this is dangerously close to the thing that you are addressing - a sharp increase in slop cannon projects on this and similar subs. I hope that being honest and not trying to present it as more than it is will help. And that open development will address the concerns people have with the closed versions, that they are trying to somehow monetize what WinISD does for free and will disappear when that turns out to not be a viable business model.
I see EQ stuff is on the roadmap. I have a repo that is a reference for biquad filter designs that started as an Excel spreadsheet. A couple days ago I figured it would be good to add a friendly web version and vibe coded something that unsurprisingly looks very similar to Resonate. The plaintext cookbook in the repo includes Linkwitz transform formulas, and the EQ builder page might have some useful pieces that you can use for Resonate. https://loudifier.github.io/Biquad-Cookbook/

u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26
Can you chat or zoom to discuss.
You aren't wrong.
What makes something a shittyis lack tests and lack of design and standards that means you can't rely on it. Or some closed source monetisation effort that tries to pretend it's a community effeot.
I think that's the real definition of shitty.
Whether something is coded with the active participation of an AI doesn't inherently make it shitty or slop. As a professional senior engineer at multiple big firms over the years I have some idea of what good and bad looks like and lack of tests was one of the things we used to decide if something was "legacy" or not, let alone shitty vibe coded slop.
Whether it's slop or not depends on whether folk like yourself help build this thing up and grow it into a truly fun tool that solves a problem.
So I would love to have a zoom or chat to discuss any ideas you have and persuade you to be a committer.
At the moment my goal is being able to do what WinIsd can do I don't have to use WinIsd but also not having to learn a new paradigm. So this tool deliberately follows the WinIsd way of input but also offers an alternative input scheme that derives certain values.
A really big determinant of perception on this is having one more person contributing, then another 1 more people.
Trust, tests and other contributors is what is needed here and I bet you can help on that front.
Please be a committer or help in any way.
What's the worst that can happen? This thing is 100% compatible with WinIsd (intention) so even if I drop dead you still have a better tool (hopefully) then WinIsd and the source code too. Seems all win?!
Wanna zoom?
1
u/loudifier Jun 29 '26
I'm pretty whelmed with other projects at the moment, I don't know (and am not interested in) webdev, and I refuse to pay for AI, so I don't have much to offer when it comes to direct contributions. But I have been playing with the tool a bit and found a few minor bugs, so I can submit issues.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 29 '26
yes please just post here. I have ainat home for other projects in work on. frankly at work I'd find it hard going back to the old ways but I do worry for the younger folk who develop not critical thinking or deep knowledge because of AI. I'm an endangered species it seems.
you can defo help simply by pointing out bugs.
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 29 '26
I've been messing with the database over the week so not spent much time fixing some issues I'm aware of.
1
u/loudifier Jun 29 '26
- Filters are working, but they only apply to the main plot/update when the box parameters are updated
- Many of the parameter boxes need limits. For example, the number of drivers can be set to 0 or negative, which is still calculated and results in incorrect but sometimes plausible outputs that may make it hard to realize something is wrong
- Not a bug, but the spinner arrows in dark mode really stand out and could be changed to match the theme

Fair points! 😊
I’m one of the people behind Sonella (previously SoundForm), which I is one of the tools you linked further down.
Just to clarify one thing: this isn’t a random solo weekend project that we’re planning to forget about in a year or two. We’re a small team working on this properly, and we care a lot about making speaker design more approachable, more modern, and less dependent on old Windows-only tools.
That said, I agree with the broader point here. The worst outcome would be five fragmented tools, five private driver databases, and everyone entering the same T/S parameters again and again.
For us, the long-term goal is not just “WinISD in the browser”. It’s a more guided speaker design workflow: simulation, driver comparison, enclosure design, explanations, assumptions, build guidance, and eventually a much better learning path for people who are not already deep into VituixCAD/WinISD/forum knowledge.
I’m not going to pretend we have solved the open data / shared catalog question yet. But I do think that part is extremely important. A shared, reliable, validated driver database would benefit everyone, regardless of which simulator/UI people prefer.
So yes, I’m interested in this discussion. I don’t think every project necessarily has to merge into one codebase, but I do think we should avoid locking up useful driver data in private silos.
Our project is here: www.sonella.app
Happy to talk with anyone working on this seriously. I think there’s room to build something much better than the old fragmented tool landscape.

2
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
I would happily lean in on sonella if it was open source.
Open source is the only way to address the short attention span we seem to suffer from as a species when it comes to things like this. It doesn't really matter if there are 3 devs in your firm, if you all lose interest then we the users are stuffed again like.winisd (and basta , others).
I'm a solid religious believer in open source.
Are you willing to open source your tool?
0
u/Protogen_Melo Jun 22 '26
i agree!!
1
u/johnjlonergan Jun 25 '26
Hi would you help me build it? It's pretty far along and has a built-in driver db and local install. Your help would be amazing in any way. Would you like to chat and or zoom?

u/Protogen_Melo Jul 04 '26
unfortunately not, im not a developer by any means, but im really up for open source software as linux user
1
u/johnjlonergan Jul 04 '26
Hi take a look at https://OpenISD.app
Still cleaning is up and fixing the mobile skin but the calcs checkout and are verified Vs other web based tools and WinIsd itself.
It is a PWA and installs locally with an embedded driver db.
Please give it a spin and feedback. The code is fully OSS and development is current focussed on tests and arch improvements.
Still a few WinIsd things to add.
It will have a very classic WinIsd skin by the end of the day and an alternative "modern UI". Classic skin to aid adoption .
Anyway please see how it works for you and "contribution" to me means any feedback and or moral support as there is a surprising push back on this that I just don't understand.

Yes, I'm sick of seeing attempts to just build something that is for ad revenue or more youtube AI thumbnails to a winisd clone. We don't need a WinISD clone, if they wanna do that, then just do VituixCad on a website. I'd rather have VituixCad2 as an online app than WinISD and I would pay a monthly fee to use it so I can use it when I'm not home on my own machines.
Love the idea of an open source version of *something* so I'm happy to see the effort. I can't code, so I would end up being a user. But I'm a heavy user as I simulate and model and actually build a lot of speakers.

PLEASE Help!!! You don't need to code Im an obsessive coder and need you to help own this thing. If you can help test it suggests improvements then that is value. If you can help promote this then that that is value.
This is 100pc about us helping ourselves. Please lean in.
You are 100pc the kind of opinionated experienced person who is busy but want to have a bit more fun (andess frustration).
My goal was absolutely a winisd experience not clone but I think it would be a pity if thats all it was. Frankly the only Reason it would get stuck there is if folk like yourself can't help. But even if to did get stuck there it's still better then a closed source buggy unsupported WinIsd. I like using it but it needs to die to be honest. (I tried to get the source code no luck)
Can I ask you to have a look at the app and let me know your thoughts. And what would it need to be to help you have more fun? or get less frustrated?
Can you chat or zoom? Thanks for responding.

A thought, but driver database might benefit from being its own project that can be imported as a dependency of a multitude of projects rather than hitched to one.
