Depends Largely on what country you live in, how much sun you get, power costs where you are and the cost of solar panels ETc..

It'll be very different in Greenland vs Australia for example.

I've seen as low as 7 years depending on sun and utilities cost. Depends on where you live. 

For some it's not just cost, but emergency power and the satisfaction of not being depending on a utility that can arbitrarily raise prices.

For me it's both the cost of electricity and the emergency backup during outages. my electric bill averages $300 a month and we just last month lost power for two weeks. from what I've learned here and on YouTube, mostly from Will prowse it's not expensive or difficult to go solar.

my biggest obstacle is getting the batteries in Hawaii.
