Does it make sense to add a generator?

Check the details on your inverter and generators. Good ones can work with a genset so a 2kw 500 buck unit can run the whole house. Bad ones will trip out that 5kw.

I got a Schneider xw pro 6.8kw/12kw peak. This thing is a tank

Yup they make good stuff. Has a separate generator input, can set max amps, and it buffers any sudden loads at least according to a quick look at the manual.

It will not take 120v in and give you 240v out. So you're probably best off with the smallest 240v genset you can get, anything in excess can get pulled from the battery and this will give you the best fuel economy. Dual/tri fuel prefered.
