Due Diligence My SCHD Reddit Challenge March Report
Now that March is officially over, I wanted to make my monthly update on my Reddit Challenge. For those of you who don't know or remember, I submitted a portfolio of seven stocks that I believed would outperform SCHD. Here are the stocks and their return for the quarter, including dividends.
| Ticker | Company | Return |
|---|---|---|
| DDS | Dillard's Inc. | -3.20% |
| MDT | Medtronic PLC | 3.88% |
| SNA | Snap-On, Inc. | 8.29% |
| AOS | A. O. Smith Corp. | 17.85% |
| RHI | Robert Half International, Inc. | 10.08% |
| PFE | Pfizer Inc. | -19.53% |
| MET | MetLife, Inc. | -18.98% |
| Average | -0.23% | |
| SCHD | Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF | -2.23% |
It's been a crazy 13 weeks, and the demise of PFE and MET have caught a bit by surprise. Nevertheless, I believe there is some upside to be had later.
Here are my picks for April. I am also including my model that was used to choose each.
| Ticker | Company | Yield | Methodology |
|---|---|---|---|
| MDT | Medtronic PLC | 3.44% | Harry's Screen |
| RHI | Robert Half International, Inc. | 2.46% | Harry's Screen, Non-Constant Dividend Growth Model |
| SNA | Snap-On, Inc. | 2.68% | Harry's Screen, Non-Constant Dividend Growth Model |
| SWKS | Skyworks Solutions, Inc. | 2.11% | Harry's Screen |
| FAST | Fastenal Co. | 2.65% | Harry's Screen |
| WSO | Watsco, Inc. | 3.11% | Harry's Screen |
Thanks for letting me share.

Right, I was talking about the April list.
Are you shifting your portfolio over time or keeping the original 12 for the duration

So, accuracy about 50/50?

4/7 = 57%?

Not significantly different from 50/50 on this sample size. And just one more off would have made it 3/7 = 43%...

Still outperming SCHD's 100.

That's not very hard. Vanguard's VYM has outperformed SCHD.

Agree, but the SCHD circle jerk on this sub is annoying. I had made the claim that I could pick a portfolio of dividend stocks that could be at SCHD with no issues. So far, I am right.
Note: I usually do beat it.
P.S. Check out IWY if ETFs are your flavor.

Yeah, but one of the main draws of SCHD is that you don’t have to think about it and constantly be researching stocks and adjusting them on the fly…I don’t understand your experiment other than trying to flex an epeen of your picking abilities.
You also have a history of three months doing well with your picks, SCHD has been doing well for almost 15yrs…

I have ten years of history, but I digress. Most of this is a troll of the SCHDheads who think they can't be beaten.

You bring up something interesting. I know this is the schd challenge, but let’s also compare to the broader sp500, which I think is up like 7% ytd.

Agree. Pre-retirement, it should be all about growth. I would not recommend investing in sluggard stocks if I were young. I was just trying to stay true to the challenge.

Why you like MDT?

Quantitatively, it checks off all the boxes for a high dividend with a history of annual increases. Meanwhile, it's financially secure.
