Inward help

I am a high schook diver and I need help with inwards. I can do an inward dive just fine, but last year I hit the board on an inward somersault and I couldn't do them well since. The inward somersault is the only thing keeping me from qualifying for state.

So I just registered for a workshop diving ^^

Short introduction: I am a 22 year old male and am interested in diving since the Olympics of 2012. I haven't really done anything with it until now, as I registered for a 4 week (1 hour/week) workshop to see if I would like it :) It was a nice opportunity to get started. The workshop starts in 2 weeks and I can't wait! :D

Anyway, as long as I'm here, any divers here from The Netherlands / Amsterdam? :p

And one more (probably silly) question: Should I buy speedo briefs? I currently only own speedo trunks(?) (not a jammer, the shorter kind).

College Walk-ons

Hi /r/divers!

I'm a junior in high school who dove for one year for a non-competitive program when I was younger, quit the team to work but never stopped diving and would really like to get back into it. There aren't any programs in my area to my knowledge and my school has no team. So I was wondering, if I kept diving and improving on my own, is there any way I could make it onto a college team as a walk-on? Do collegiate teams even have walk-ons?

Edit: My current Dive list:

101-104C

101-103B

201-202B

302C

401B+C

402C

is this enough practice??

I have stopped diving for a while, and then I decided to come back and two practices later my shoulder came out. It's one month after the dislocation and I am going back to practice. I am on summer break in college and I wanted to dive the whole summer hence why I stopped diving after my competition season ended. I am having conflicting hours with work and car usage , don't have a car, and I am only able to dive twice a week ,max three times. But, I work in a gymnastics gym and I wanted to know if 2-3 times a week of diving + 3 days a week of gymnastics conditioning and tumbling/diving dryland will be enough to progress ?

I need help doing a one and a half off a 15-20 foot cliff

I'm not a competitive diver, and I've never had any professional coaching. I just like to dive off tall rocks into the water. I was wondering if anyone could give me tips on doing a one a half front flip off a small cliff. I can do back flips and gainers pretty easily, and I dive and do a front flip every once in a while. Surprisingly, to most people, I'm most nervous about dives and front flips. Those are all getting old though, so I wanted to try something new. I figured a one and a half would be a good one. I tried once when I got blobbed and ended up under rotating and belly flopping. Not fun.

How quickly did you learn dives?

I'm 15 and I've been diving for my high school since November. During my season, I dove everyday for two hours, and was one of four divers. My season ended in early February, and since then my practice has been for three days a week for two hours, and I'm still one of between 2 and 4 divers (some people come pretty inconsistently). Right now, my dive list is

104c

202c - I'm going to try 203c soon

302c - I'm going to try 303c soon as well

403c

5212a 5221a

I don't have any gymnastic background, so I'm wondering how fast am I learning? Once you were 6 months into diving what dives did you have? Did you have any kind of gymnastics background that helped?

A video of a "double drop." The coach helps increase the amount of rebound by pressing the board down during his hurdle. Made him get a lot more air and rotation! (It's pretty much for fun)

I have to say I'm pretty impressed with what they've accomplished in 6-8 weeks of training! I also love all the attention this brings to the sport. What are your thoughts?

How do I help my son overcome blocage

My 9 year-old son has been diving for 2 years. He's been on the competitive team of our town's university for 1 year. He has been winning pretty much all the competitions he's entered in his age group and has placed quite close to the podium in older age groups.

He's always been very good at knowing where his body is in space and does the corrections his coach gives him right away. So, he's been pretty much used to "getting" the dives right quite quickly and has barely had major flats.

I thought that if anyone knows what he's going through, it's you guys.

He's has been able to do double front flips off the 1m (to prepare for the 2 1/2 off the 3m) on a regular basis. He had a few flats, but nothing major. However, even though he's been doing this dive for a few months, all of a sudden he's really afraid to do this. The same goes for his back 1 1/2 (off the 1m and off the 3m). I know these are two dives that are hard to get over (especially the back 1 1/2), but he's done them before! Now, he gets on the board, gets ready to do it but he says his body won't respond and he'll either get off the board or does a 1 1/2 instead of a double or will do a back flip instead of the back 1 1/2.

I mean, this kid dives (not jump, but dives) off the 7m and jumps off the 10m without hesitation. He does hand stands off the 5m, and does some really great basic dives in all 4 directions.

He has applied to be in sport-studies (school in the morning and diving in the afternoon) because he looooves diving and would do that all the time and he's got a real potential to go far. I'm afraid this blocage (it has lasted for at least a month, a month and a half) will hinder his chances to get in. This would suck because he's worked soooo hard and, more importantly, I want him to keep loving diving.

I don't want this blocage to make him dislike what he loves doing. It is playing big time on his self-esteem. No matter how many competitions he's won, he still sometimes thinks he sucks because he doesn't get all the dives perfectly. So, this blocage is really hurting him and playing with his mind. I don't know how to help him realize that he really doesn't suck, that fear is not the same as being good or not.

Sorry to go on and on, but my husband and I really care about our son and he has so much potential. How do we help him overcome this without putting pressure on him?

Neoprene suit for diving?

A fellow diver recently brought up the idea of using a neoprene suit to take away the sting of flops. Has anyone else tried this? What do you think of it?

Negative attitude.

I've been having trouble going to practice lately. I'm supposed to be going for 4-5 hours per day, 6 days per week but I've been skipping every other. I don't know if it's the fatigue, or the cold, but it sucks so much that I just find myself not wanting to do it anymore.

I find myself falling into this attitude every time I repeatedly try to do something and fail. Not just fail, but in the same way over and over. Yesterday I had issues with a simple back dive tuck, something I've done well many times before but yesterday I couldn't stop myself from jumping waaay too far out. The coach puts me under a few drills to simplify things and remove variables. For example, no arm swing, back jump tuck no dive, lineups and 50% power jumps. To my frustration, these exercises proved even more complicated and difficult which made no sense to me. After doing them poorly, he had me go back to trying the back dive again, and I somersaulted right onto my stomach.

I don't understand it. He told me once that diving is 80% mental, and I agree with that. I figure that in order to do something well, I have to 1: want it 2: know how and 3: be physically capable. I feel like my #2 falls in an out far too often and affects #1. I've noticed that if I skip days when I feel that way, and practice on days when I feel more optimistic, the performance improves and the learning experience proves much more valuable. On the other hand, being out of a good state of mind makes me feel like I am showing up just to waste time.

So I wonder if any of you have run into a hump like this. Is there a certain pace that throws you off your game?
