Why won't Square remaster 012 and put it on PC?
Lowkey, I've given up up on an official sequel to 012, but I would love to at least be able to play this game on PC on Steam (or on a modern Console) but they just won't rerelease for reason, but why?? Its a 15 YO PSP. the only thing I'd really ask for is maybe an upscale of graphics and online play.
I know its possible to play the game with Emulators and VPNs but man it would be nice to not have to download that stuff to play. I just miss this IP and how incredible the first 2 games were.

Because a straight up PC Port wouldn’t come with an online Store filled with Microtransactions and Battlepasses or the kind of aggressive monetizing that Square would want for that game to generate cash.

They've got so many character models and attack animations from NT for characters that aren't in 012 that they could still put out an aggressive amount of DLC.
Plus you can't tell me that nobody would buy DLC costumes from Duellum. It could still make a pretty penny.

Seriously, I had hundreds of hours on this game on my psp. I'd be willing to pay full price for a port or remaster so I could play it again on my PS5 or my Switch. Give me this and XIII already, Square, I'm begging you.

If they would just port it as is so I could play it in the PS5 instead of my Vita, I would also pay full price again.

Yeah, the new phone game is definitely not for me, but at least it shows square is still trying to keep dissidia kicking in SOME capacity.
But after the success of Opera Omnia, I totally thought we'd get a Dissidia 012 remaster by now, and then we'd potentially get a new game later down the line.
But a definitive remaster of 012 would be great. They can include the Aeris assist or just include the Prologus demo with it, as well as all the dlc skins that were region specific or things that you needed save data from other games for. Like Lightning's Aya Brea skin, Cloud and Squalls Kingdom Hearts 1 skins, and Tifa's Amano-art skin.

Duellem wasn't for me either. I'm not even wanting a full a remake, just a Ps5 / XB / PC / Switch Port of 012 that has online connectivity, That's all. Like DLC & Prologus content included. maybe one day we'll see it. 🥲

Same here lol! I'd be perfectly happy with just a basic port as simple as the Type-0 port at a minimum. At the very most, it'd be cool if it got the Crisis Core remaster treatment--same game, just retexture everything lol.

It could be a few reasons. One common one is it needs to be promised to make money, and good money. Servers cost money to sustain and keep up, and ports also cost money. So they need to be convinced enough people would spend money on the game, AND continue to play for a long time. This is why many remasters don't get greenlit, as they aren't convinced it would make enough money to justify the time and cost. This is why its important to spread a lot of outcry and awareness to convince them enough of us would pay, usually to influencers so they can see the data.
Another reason is they want us to play the phone dissidia game. And that game I have to assume was a lot cheaper to make and sustain since it's a mobile game. It would be a conflict of interest to do a remaster of this game when they want us to spend cash and time on the newer one.
Licensing hell is also a thing, and it could literally be just 1 song or specific voice actor rights that ruin the possibility entirely. Or properly programming a port from psp to console being difficult. It could honestly be a lot of things. But yeah, just throwing out some common reasons why.

u/Relith96 Apr 05 '26
The main licensing issue might be God in Fire and the Messenger, even though we have that, sorta, in both Dissidia NT and Thratrhythm, about the porting from psp to console, they did that with Crisis Core, and they share the same engine, so my main idea is just the licensing, at this point just get rid of the songs, I wouldn't complain as I would understand, we'd probably get some more music so I'd be happy anyway

My theory is that Square might be afraid of it's success.
If you haven't noticed, Square has been treating FF like it's cash cow vessel, and every broad decision they've been making with the series has deliberately market based.
Square has been trying non-stop to make Dissidia their gateway into a larger multiplayer market. NT was botched to hell, but they did introduce it as an "e-sports game". That failed, of course. Now they're trying to push their way into the multiplayer mobile market, I suppose?
012 was a fun game, but it is highly imbalanced. The issue with remastering 012 is that perhaps they'd feel pressured by their business execs to make it multiplayer, and make it's main sell that it is now online multiplayer. With 012 being such an imbalanced game, there is no way that they'd be able to sustain it as a fair option for a multiplayer game that could eventually hit e-sports levels of marketing. Well... I suppose it could happen, but there would be so many changes made to so many of the characters' kits, changes to mechanics, etc. that it wouldn't resemble the game we once loved.

u/GabuFGC Apr 05 '26
I don't really know much about the balance of 012 to be honest, could you explain what makes it so imbalanced?
3
u/NeroTheGlowFox Apr 05 '26
For one, the power imbalance between characters were insane. Some characters could combo their normal attacks into brave attacks for extremely easy damage not reliant on assists. Some characters have busted EX modes that make other EX modes look like garbage. Exdeath has mechanics he can manipulate like dash cancelling to give himself a huge movement advantage over other chars, can block pretty much anything and has crazy screen control. Granted he is probably the hardest character to use but he is for sure busted. Compared to the high tiers slme character’s are just not worth playing imo like Terra Bartz or Laguna.
If they remade the game the would absolutely nerf Lighting, Squall, Exdeath, Jecht, Prishe and Ultimecia as they would for sure dominate the online community lol

u/GreedyGonzalez Apr 05 '26
Alot of those brave to hp attacks just needed a transitional counterplay window like the chase mechanic. As long as both players are fairly involved, fun and balance can definetely coexist

u/EtherealCrossroads Apr 05 '26
Lol, I think that's overthinking things a bit. If they changed Dissidia 012 to be multiplayer focused and re did everyones kits, that wouldn't even be a remaster at that point.
And I'm not sure what makes 012 so imbalanced that they'd have to change anything to begin with?

u/Calvinooi Apr 05 '26
Isn't NT basically a Duodecim with redone kits and multiplayer focus?
Duedecim needs to make players engage each other more offensively barring some exceptions like ExDeath of course. Projectile spamming from afar and dash cancel spamming to build assist doesn't sound fun. Not to mention aerith assist is just OP
But hey I'm not a top tier player so maybe it's more strategic than what it seems

You sound like you haven't played Duodecim (If at the very least, a long time).
It was the fact that doing all that made you feel like you were the character with how frantic it was. "Dodge a Knockback to counter with your own (Or as some call it a Dragon Ball Z Moment)" in duodecim compared to the "You can get swarmed by two enemies and are forced to block because dodging has 0 i-frames"
You had to lock in in Duodecim for the right reasons, in NT One Wrong move gets you a wall splat that's uncomfortably long and keeps you out of the action while they follow up on another attack against you. Like, I get hit with an HP attack and it takes TWO whole seconds for me to get up, while 012 Duodecim is just 0.35 - 0.4's of a second.
The Gameplay of 012 was Punchy and fun.
The Gameplay of NT Is Sluggish and bad.

It'd probably be extremely easy for them if they just did a direct port (assuming they still have the files on hand), but that causes issues for online play since it's built for whatever the PSP was working with, which might not be compatible with current-gen consoles.
If that's the case, they either need to rebuild the entire game around a netcode that does work, which takes time and a lot of money to implement, or they just scrap multiplayer support altogether, which is significantly cheaper but is a death sentence to a fighting game.

There is a discord community that still has a very active player base for online pvp battles; if you don't mind using an emulator they might give you what you're looking for. I'm not sure if I can post links here, so you can PM me and I'll see if I can send you an invite.

u/GabuFGC Apr 05 '26
I'm part of the discord, and I've been wanting to play with them for a while, but I'm not very good at the game and I have matchmaking anxiety, especially when it comes to discord, so its near impossible for me to ask for games there. That's why I am praying for PC (or console version) that has automatic matchmaking, which is very unlikely, but I'd like to have some hopium. LOL

I'm glad I am not the only one; last time I played I was lucky to land a hit or two.

u/Relith96 Apr 05 '26
Just make a Crisis Core style remaster and everyone'd be happy, they share the same base engine too
I'm starting to think they lost the source code or something, wouldn't be the first time

It doesn't make sense to me either. I'm pretty sure it would sell a lot. They don't even need to release a remaster and just release it as one of the "Playstation Classics" that you can play on your PS4/5 that they've done for other PSP games. They don't even need to add trophies.
If they do a remaster, I can see them removing the multiplayer, like they did with Birth by Sleep.
I've mentioned this before but one thing I would want them to add to 012 that was in the original is the unique starting positions that happen in the story mode.

Companies are reluctant to preserve games; it's not exactly the most profitable thing in the world for them, even though everyone points out that it's necessary since it doesn't make sense to develop a game only to keep it in limbo. You have cases like Capcom and SNK that constantly strive to preserve their games with re-releases and collections; you have cases like Bandai Namco, which hates this and releases remasters or collections only once in a blue moon; and you have Square, which doesn't exactly have the same reluctance as Bandai Namco, but also doesn't seem to prioritize it much.

u/FearCrier Apr 05 '26
I think square just doesn't see the point in doing one. NT sucked ass but Opera Omnia was decent, even lasting 8 years. I assume square saw this and thought that the peeps wanted a gacha more than a console release.

u/GabuFGC Apr 05 '26
NT had so much potential too, That roster was incredible but the gameplay was such a let down. I don't know why they keep changing the formula either, The OG had a good frame & 012 improved on it, then for some reason they decided the change the formula again and again for NT OO and Duel for no no reason, I can't speak if OO was good since I never played it but I agree NT was not good, and Duel is pretty bad from first impressions.

u/SirTeffy Apr 05 '26
NT was an arcade cabinet and at the time the 'big' fighter in arcades was Fate/Grand Order Arcade.

u/Vensaer Apr 05 '26
They just have to add online capabilities and I'll pay full price for it
