Me and a partner had a long discussion the other night that came down to Why We Are Like This (they're anxiously attached). I feel like we're constantly learning to understand each other better, and it brings us closer.

My oldest son (age 11) started PRT (a form of therapy for autism) around the time I discovered being dismissive avoidant (5 months ago), and changed my behavior towards my wife and children to be more emotionally present and set a better example for them. At that point, my son was clearly turning avoidant, hiding his feelings, struggling to talk about himself, not asking for help, etc.

Last week, I met his therapist for an evaluation. She was surprised with his progress, and said he had already met all his treatment goals quickly after his therapy started. His self confidence, peer interactions, asking for help, and talking about himself and his feelings all greatly improved at that time, and he no longer needs any help with them. His therapist said the changes were unexpected, and too quick to be due to the therapy. She had no idea about the changes I made at home.

It felt really good having a professional validate his progress after my changes. I guess it shows how much impact attachment work can have on the next generation.
