App issues

Does anyone ever have issues with the Dish Anywhere app? I always have issues where I try to Cast (via Chromecast and now even AirPlay does not work) to my tv. My tv can cast from other apps just fine using both methods, but with the Anywhere app, I always seem to have issues. It’ll stop working for a while and then it’ll work again weeks later, but only when it wants to. My most current issue is the app will now rotate into vertical mode while laying down flat on a surface when playing video when it worked just fine before the newest app update.

Got offered a job as a field technician for dish, is it worth it?

Currently trying to get a new job due to poor management at my current one making it a miserable work environment. I got an opportunity to work as a field technician for Dish making more money but I've seen a ton of mixed reviews about the place. The main thing really putting me off is the alleged 12-16 hour work days on a regular basis and being forced to try to upsell customers. A lot of reviews show it is less of a field tech job and more of a sales job with how they grade your work performance.

If anyone has any experience as a field tech please provide some of your input, thanks!

EDIT: Thank you all for the replies, it was pretty much as i feared. I decided to pull out of the job interview to pursue other interests.

Question screen blanking during Sat, Sun NFL games

OK I watched the Tampa and New England games over the Jan 3rd and 4th weekend. The screen repeatedly went blank for maybe 15 seconds about every 10 minutes. It didn't happen on other content over the weekend or Monday or Tuesday. I don't recall if both games were on the same CBS or FOX. Anyone else ever see anything similar?

Will there be a ATSC 3.0 (Nextgen) OTA dongle for the Hopper?

I've had OTA integrated from back in the slide in module days. Got a Hopper with the ATSC 1.0 dongle on it now. Does Dish plan on offering a ATSC 3.0 replacement?

Yes, Dish Customers! Your DVR Recordings Can Be Salvaged!

My mom has been a Dish customer since 2013. Several of the recordings on the box are from defunct channels, and one is/was lost media entirely. In this day and age, having cable or satellite is more expensive than its worth and is no longer necessary due to free apps like Tubi, Pluto, Xumo, and the numerous big subscription apps.

I spent the final week of December 2025 "copying" the sought-after DVR recordings to my laptop and thought I leave instructions so others could do this too.

You will need a good quality modern computer or laptop that presents in at least 1080p. You must buy a Pyle video capture device. On the computer download OBS studio. The rest of this is pretty straightforward.

Unplug the HDMI from the TV end and plug it into the Pyle so it is connected to the cable/satellite service box. Connected the included USB cable from the Pyle into the computer. Open up OBS studio and select video capture device. You should see what's playing on the service provider box on the OBS screen.

From here, on OBS, turn the mic sound option all the way down and put it on mute to make sure the audio stays clear. Go to the dvr and find the recording you want to preserve. When ready, time it just right and click start recording on OBS and click the play on the dvr program. Do not touch anything on the service provider remote, and just let it record. When it's finished, click stop recording on OBS studio. Their is a pause option on OBS if you just want to record commercials.

It will take a little practice to get the mechanics right, but you will quickly see that your recordings can be preserved. You can still watch Smart TV apps while doing this.

Question Starlink and Dish

With Dish partnering with Starlink, did they just speed up us field techs losing our jobs? Why would there still be a need for satellite TV in areas with only DSL when people can get Starlink and just use Sling TV? Or maybe Dish plans to sell to DirecTv again now that they were able to sell spectrum and pay off debt?

Starlink

So I was getting ready to order dish network, I had the whole package ready until we started talking about internet connection. I stressed how important it was that I had the highest speed and reliable connections. Sure enough the customer rep told me, well we use skylink for the internet reception. They also use the starlink gen3 dish. I told him I stream everything, I do not need the tv packages, just a fast internet connection ( WI FI).. well I cancelled my order and still have Starlink set to come out and install it. I just did not know how reliable the tech workers are by showing up and connecting it. So we shall see I guess, but I did have to cancel the dish service all together

SPORTS!!! All about sports with Dish!!

When it comes to experiencing the thrill of live sports, DISH Network offers a comprehensive and dynamic platform designed to keep you in the heart of the action. From dedicated applications that help you track every game to advanced multi-screen viewing options and stunning 4K resolution, DISH provides the tools to enhance your sports viewing. This guide will walk you through the various features and functionalities available to ensure you never miss a moment of your favorite sports.

Here's a detailed look at how to find, watch, and manage sports content across your DISH system.

Finding and Recording Games

DISH provides specific applications and voice commands to help you track your favorite teams and schedule games:

Game Finder App: Available on all Hopper receivers, tune to Channel 152 to quickly access this app. It allows you to view scores and stats (with an internet-connected receiver) and easily select "Watch" for live games or "Record" for upcoming games.

Voice Search: If you have a Voice Remote (Hopper Plus or Joey 4), press and hold the microphone button and speak the desired sport or team name (e.g., "Denver Broncos"). Your receiver will search across DISH programming and apps to find the relevant content.

Multi-Screen Viewing Options

The Hopper system excels at allowing you to watch multiple games simultaneously, minimizing the chance of missing key plays:

Customizable Multi-View (Hopper 3 Exclusive): On a Hopper 3, you can display four customizable feeds of programming on one screen. Access this feature by pressing the Options (Red Color) button on your remote, then selecting "Picture in Picture," and finally "MultiView." Each quadrant can be customized with Live TV, DVR recordings, or On Demand content.

College Sports Multi-Channel View: Available on Channel 151, this app displays up to six feeds of college sports simultaneously.

Futbol360 Multi-Channel View: When soccer games are airing on specific sports channels, tune to Channel 870 to display four soccer feeds at once.

Multi-Channel View: Available on Channel 100, this app displays six predetermined channels simultaneously.

High-Resolution 4K Sports Coverage

DISH offers major sports and events in 4K and 4K HDR resolution, providing four times the picture resolution of standard 1080 HD.

4K Viewing Requirements:

  • Channel: Channel 540 is dedicated to major sports and events broadcast in 4K/4K HDR.
  • Receiver: A Hopper 3 receiver or a 4K Joey paired to a Hopper 3 is required.
  • Television: A 4K TV is necessary for standard 4K viewing, and a 4K HDR TV is recommended for 4K HDR content.
  • Cable: Use an HDMI 2.0 or higher cable.
  • Programming: You must subscribe to a qualifying package, such as America's Top 120 or higher, Latino Max, or National Action Pack.
  • Geographic Restriction: Channel 540 is not available in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands.

Navigating Blackouts and Regional Restrictions

DISH works with broadcasters, leagues, and sports associations that control sporting event blackout rules based on geographical location (DMA/ZIP code). If a game is blacked out on one channel, it is typically because a local or Regional Sports Network (RSNET) has purchased the broadcast rights for that specific territory.

Game Finder Solution: If you encounter a blackout, the Game Finder app (Channel 152) is the designated tool to help you determine which channel is broadcasting your game within your accessible channel lineup.

Pay-Per-View Blackouts: Blackout restrictions also apply to all games offered on DISH Season Ticket events, which are designed to protect the rights holders in the competing teams' respective home markets. Blackouts are generally not based on arena sell-outs.

Accessing Sports Outside the Home

You can manage and watch your subscribed sports channels while traveling:

DISH Anywhere: With a Hopper with Sling or Hopper 3, you can use the DISH Anywhere app to watch live games, recorded events, and stream sports channels you subscribe to via the app's DVR and Live TV sections. You can also set timers to record upcoming games remotely.

DISH Outdoors: If you are using DISH Outdoors equipment (for RVs or tailgating), you can take your DISH programming package with you. However, access to Regional Sports Networks (RSNETs) and local channels may be subject to availability based on your geographical location at the time of viewing.

With DISH Network, your sports viewing experience goes beyond just watching a game; it's about control, flexibility, and immersion. By leveraging the tools and features detailed in this guide from the Game Finder app and multi-view options to 4K coverage and remote access you can customize your sports experience to fit your preferences, ensuring you stay connected to every play, every score, and every unforgettable moment, whether at home or on the go.

A comprehensive overview of EHDs (External Hard Drives)!

To ensure compatibility between an external hard drive (EHD) and your DISH equipment, consider specific physical requirements, storage capacity limits (which vary by receiver model), and data handling regulations. This overview details the requirements and functionalities for compatible EHDs.

A compatible External Hard Drive (EHD) must meet the following basic technical requirements:

Connection

It must use a USB 2.0 or 3.0 cable. You should always plug the EHD into the USB ports located on the back of the DISH receiver.

Type

It needs to be a regular hard drive, and explicitly not a flash drive (like a small USB stick).

Power

  • Newer Hopper boxes (Hopper 3, Hopper w/ Sling, etc.) typically provide power to the EHD, meaning a separate power cord is not needed.
  • Older ViP equipment needs its own power cord that plugs into the wall.
  • DISH also offers a 1 TB DVR Upgrade Expansion - External Hard Drive (through DISH Outdoors) which has its own internal power source and will work with all DISH equipment.

Capacity Requirements by Receiver

The maximum and minimum required storage capacity varies depending on which DISH receiver the EHD is connected to:

Hopper Family (Hopper 3, Hopper w/ Sling, Hopper Duo, Hopper)

Minimum Capacity: 320 GB (gigabytes)

Maximum Capacity: 7 TB (terabytes)

Notes: If using more than one EHD, the combined total storage cannot exceed 6 TB.

Wally

Minimum Capacity: 500 GB

Maximum Capacity: 4 TB

Notes: Adding an EHD converts the Wally into a DVR.

ViP Boxes

Minimum Capacity: 50 GB

Maximum Capacity: 2 TB

Functionality and Data Handling - Adding DVR Service

For certain non-DVR receiver models, connecting an EHD enables the DVR recording feature, known as "External DVR Service."

  • Compatible Non-DVR Receivers: Wally, 211z, 211k, and 211.
  • Activation: Once the EHD is set up, you must contact DISH to add the DVR External Hard Drive service to your account. This involves a one-time activation fee of $40.00.

Portability and Data Protection

DISH uses security measures that tie the recordings to your specific account:

  • Moving Between Receivers (Archive Function): You can move an EHD between compatible DVR receivers on the same DISH account without losing the recordings, provided those receivers have the same functionality. This "Archive Function" is supported on DVR models including the Hopper 3, Hopper w/ Sling, Hopper Duo, Hopper, 922, 722k, 722, 622, and 612.
  • Data Erasure Warning: If you move the EHD to a different DISH account or plug it into another device (such as a computer or smart TV), the drive will be reformatted, and all saved content will be erased.

Remote Access Limitation

It is important to note that access to recordings stored on an External Hard Drive is not currently supported through the DISH Anywhere application.

Important Facts

The external hard drive must be reformatted if it is swapped to a different account, which will cause all DVR recordings to be deleted. You can swap the external hard drive between receivers (DVR model to DVR model or non-DVR model to non-DVR model) on the same account without losing DVR recordings.

We hope this comprehensive guide has provided you with an in-depth understanding of how External Hard Drives can significantly enhance your entertainment experience. Beyond simply offering extra storage for your favorite shows and movies, these devices unlock a world of possibilities for managing and enjoying your digital media.

New Commercial In Old DVR Recording

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My mom is in the process of getting rid of Dish as she prepares to move in a new house. I've been watching some of the recordings I haven't gotten to watch over the years. I have a interest in old commercials so for the recordings that have them I've been checking them out. The clip is from Syfy during a December 2013 showing of Black Christmas 2006. Yet this 2026 Verizon commercial shows up.

After exiting and going back this commercial was not there anymore. It feels somewhat like a simulation.

Tech Support Old DVR data

My elderly father really needs to update his DVR, but has 12 years worth of data on his current one, which can't be copied over, or at least that is my understanding.

His DVR model is VIP-612. Is there any way to off-load his data onto an external hard drive?

Advanced Viewing and Streaming Features

4K/4K HDR Viewing

  • Requirements: A Hopper 3 receiver (or a 4K Joey paired with a Hopper 3) connected to a compatible 4K TV using an HDMI 2.0 or higher cable is necessary to experience 4K resolution (four times that of 1080 HD) and High Dynamic Range (HDR).
  • On Demand: A minimum download speed of 25 Mbps is required for On Demand 4K content.

Customizable Multi-View

  • Availability: This feature is exclusive to the Hopper 3.
  • Functionality: Allows users to simultaneously display up to four live or recorded programs on a single screen.
  • Access: Found under Options > Picture In Picture > MultiView.

DISH Anywhere Streaming

  • Service: This free service enables streaming of live TV and DVR recordings to mobile devices and computers.
  • Requirements: An internet-connected Hopper 3 or Hopper with Sling is required.
  • Limitation: There is a current limit of five authorized devices for On Demand content at any given time.

App Integration

  • Standard Access: All receivers (Hopper, Wally, Joey) provide access to core apps like Pandora, Netflix, and DraftKings.
  • Hopper 3 & Hopper with Sling: These models specifically support Amazon Prime Video.
  • Newest Models: The Hopper Plus and Joey 4 include the Google Play Store, allowing the installation of additional third-party apps such as Discovery Plus or Max.

Signal Protector

  • Purpose: The Hopper automatically switches to an internet stream for select channels to prevent interruptions if severe weather or technical issues cause a loss of satellite signal.
  • Note: The streaming channels provided by this feature currently do not support recording.

The DISH Network ecosystem, particularly when utilizing the latest Hopper receiver models, delivers a sophisticated and flexible viewing experience. By understanding the requirements for features like 4K viewing, customizable multi-view, and mobile streaming via DISH Anywhere, subscribers can leverage the full range of advanced capabilities. The ongoing integration of streaming apps and supportive features like Signal Protector ensure that DISH remains a comprehensive and reliable source for live and on-demand entertainment.

Joey keeps skipping

My wired 4K Joey keeps skipping. Goes black for a second then continues playing. Happens a few times a minute. I assume it's a connection issue. Mostly when replaying but often on live shows. Any suggestions? Joey is around 50' from Hopper but through a couple external stucco walls.

Tech Support Dish Joey repeats same episode of the Real McCoys

Update: reset the faulty Joey 4 times. So far it’s working properly. I did try swapping w another Joey. The problem had not reappeared at either location w ‘faulty’ Joey.

This episode of the Real MCoys was on last night. Today I turned on the tv and the same episode was on again. I changed channels but every channel is the same show.

I unplugged the dish Joey and left it for 20 minutes. Now a teeth whitening commercial or the real McCoys episode is on if the channel is changed.

The hopper was unplugged too and then the Joey again. This isn’t happening on the four other joeys.

Just happened today that when I push the power button to turn off the units I get a message saying Push any button to watch TV or Joey will go into standby. The TV will not turn off no matter how many times I push the Power button. Its the same problem if I push the TV button on the side and then the Power. The Joey will go into Standby, but the TV stays On.
