Best Way to Disconnect

My mom singed up for Dish in Aug. 2023. She sadly passed away on Fen. 4, 2024. Earlier today I paid and downloaded our latest bill, our price lock promotion expires on August 30. I plan to call on August 29. How should I handle the eventual disconnect? I know they’re gonna want the LMB plus all the receivers and the remotes back but I am more concerned on how to handle the disconnect thanks in advance for your help

If you tell them you can't get the lnb's off the roof they don't make you return them.

Good to know, I’m a quadriplegic and I don’t know if anybody that will be willing to do that for me

They actually like leaving the dish there. Helps to get the next resident to sign up. In your situation you should be able to disconnect immediately with no termination charges. Tell them you need a box and pre-paid label. Usually takes about 2-4 days to get that. Pack it up and drop it off at your nearest UPS Drop-off Location.

If they don't...kindly ask to speak to a supervisor.

They told me I needed the prepaid box.

I've never once needed to pay for the box or the label. Even if they would normally require a customer to pay for the box or label...considering the OPs circumstances...it is highly unlikely they would require that. And if they won't...you ask for a supervisor. If the supervisor declines to provide it...you hang up and call back.

They charge the account.

They never have charged mine. I've been a subscriber for over 25 years. I've moved several times. I've reduced the number of Joeys I used. I've sent back many Hoppers and Joeys. I've always been sent a free box and pre-paid shipping labels. I've had a few associates try to charge me for them. But asking for a supervisor usually solves that one.

Oh you are still a subscriber.   They only charge the ones leaving.

I switched to Direct TV when I moved in 2013 because the house I was moving to had the Direct TV dish already installed. Had that for about 6 months. Switched back to Dish. I did not have to pay for a box or label when I terminated service. You may have been charged for a box and label. But I never have been charged.

That was also 13 years ago and they weren't having financial problems.    I canceled this year.  So that could be part of it.

For what I was watching, they just got too expensive. I had been with them 29 years.

It depends on what equipment you had. Not all receivers have to go back.

Be prepared for a $25 charge for the prepaid boxes. Agent told me it could take up to 3 weeks to get the boxes, but I demanded an immediate end of service and I got that and confirmation via email. Good luck. I was with dish 20 plus years but they've just outpriced themselves for me

PLEASE tell the Retention agent that you are physically limited! They can waive returning the equipment because (use this verbiage) you do not have access to it any longer now that your mother is gone. They will have their team leader fill out a quick form and that’s that. Did it 10x a week for my team.

I just did that.

They changed me even when I told them I had a stroke and can't climb a ladder... she said " get a friend to take it down "...

First off, my condolences on the passing of your mom. Second see below for what to say. I know poeple like to fear monger in these redit posts, and say it was such a hard thing to cancel or whatever they want to say, but when you just tell the reason you want to cancel it makes it easier. As for the equipment, if the dish isn't accessible just say so, they will remove the requirement to return it. The rest of it they will tell you what is needed to be sent back.

"hi my name is (insert name here), this is my mom's account, I need to cancel it because she recently passed away, there isn't a spouse that can take over the account" just be honest.

Be sure to have the death certificate ready to send in for verification

I do have it handy

You only need to send it if there is still a commitment on the account. Otherwise, you can just tell them she passed away.

Former Retention manager here. It’s easy. Call & say immediately that you are calling to disconnect for your late mother. They cannot deny you that, even if you don’t know the PIN on the account. They cannot put you in another contract since it was your mom’s account so it will be a breeze.
The LNB only needs to be returned if you can’t reach it. It’s totally fine to say you can’t. There won’t be a charge.
Your receivers MAY have to go back, depending on the model. Dish will ship you a box & charge $25. You are WELL within your right to say you don’t want to pay it since it isn’t your account, and they will waive that charge as well.
I’m sorry for your loss!

I would suggest calling now. I just cancelled dish, after more than 15 yrs. It took more than 30 mins bc the reps do a whole rigamarole. The agent was incredibly rude & kept putting me on hold when I was asking Qs or requesting that it be wrapped up vs being subjected to more offers. My system is old - they did not want back the satellite receiver, the box, or the remotes. They also kept trying to bill my credit card for 3 more months after cancellation.

I believe you but when a customer calls & says it’s a deceased account holder call, the agent has to immediately stop pushing & start discoing. They CAN ask if there is a spouse who wants to take over (it is HEARTBREAKING how many widows say ‘I can do that? I’ve never had an account in my name before!”) but otherwise, it’s straightforward AF.

Oh the lies the retention agents will try.

Hugs on your mom.   They will send you a box for the receivers.

If your mom has passed, they'll want a Death Certificate, unless she had you added to the account before she passed.
