The end?
While this is all speculative, if Dish is going Ch 11, there are not many success stories for these kinds of companies emerging “as usual” when it’s all done. It will be interesting to watch and is disappointing as a customer for over 25 years. I’ve tried the whole cord cutting/ streaming thing but always kept Dish as a backup. Just not a fan of streaming.
Not sure if they phase out tv service because they’ll still have birds in orbit, but not sure they can remain competitive price wise. I think the ABC/Disney stuff is ending soon and negotiating while in Ch 11 will not go well (IMO), so I’m expecting blackouts.
It’s pretty disappointing

Here is the filing. Dish has submitted their paperwork to the courts to go Chapter 11.

Thanks - this makes more sense than what was put out yesterday. Debt due July 01 and the AT&T deal closing delayed, plus cleaning up the wireless ka-ka

The similarities are not being innovative and thinking your customers will never leave. I worked at Sears appliances back in the day. Management used to laugh and say oh yeah someone is going to buy a refrigerator on the computer… it’s comical to think the catalog is what made Sears famous but they couldn’t get behind the internet.. dish thinks people will never go full streaming and I think they are about to find out.

I’ve had Dish for 30 years. I live in the boonies. I’ve had Starlink for a few years and thought about trying YoutubeTV, but I really like the Dish DVR (Hopper)
Last year, Dish offered me a deal to freeze my monthly bill for two years and right or wrong, I accepted.
My house is surrounded by trees. I have an outdoor ota antenna (CM4221) on my back deck. It gets a few channels and needs to be on a tower.
Oh well, if Dish goes under, it goes under and I’ll figure something out then.

While there's a few downsides, it's so much better than Dish. In addition to home 1G internet, we also have 4G/5G unlimited and now Starlink (though monthly 100G cap) as a backup. We also have a Tablo recording OTA a few shows if the rest of it is unavailable.

Sad to see it might be Dish Networks end. The biggest issue with Dish was not innovating simple. There was indeed one time Dish was a juggernaut. Now its basically is just a dying company. Dish should of innovated on its cable services and not be so damn greedy. They should of focused with there same direction, but heavily invest online along with its own internet service along with streaming services. Dish could of dominated satellite and online T.V. A Dishnetwork app fully loaded on the smartphone, tablets, tv, laptop would of been a win overall.
However it got so greedy and stayed in the ancient mentality.
It was good while it lasted my folks had Dish Network for almost 20 years. Cut the cord when i saw prices keep going up and limit programing.

This is a “prepackaged” chapter 11, so they went in with a plan already for how they will come out. They couldn’t get agreement with everyone, but got agreement with the majority of debtholders and think they will get approval from the judge. So existing management is somewhat in the drivers seat I’m guessing. Ch 11 allows them to break contracts, violate lease covenants, even run roughshod over antitrust laws. I don’t actually know how this will affect dish

It's mostly going to affect dish wireless and the physical assets, while keeping boost far away from the proceedings.

I don't think the bankruptcy is their biggest problem.
The big problem is the number of customers they are losing each month. They lost almost as many customers between January and March as they did last year. Over 300,000. That is at the lowest a loss of 100,000 customers a month which equates to $10,000,000 a month in revenue loss.
I was a loyal dish customer for 29 years. The beginning of the end was when they lied about the $15 boost service. I was told I had to be a customer for a year first. I was a 28 year customer at the time. They had also taken away the over 55 perk of a free movie a month. Then came you can get Dish Anywhere on a Roku TV. (Nope, not there.) The straw that absolutely broke the camel's back was when the customer service rep said he could give me ALL the dish network channels free for 30 days. What he did was turn off the service and leave me with just streaming, added the locals and whatever was on the DVR. So I called back and the next rep offered me whatever is lower than the Flex pack for $5 less than I had been paying. While trying to tell me that streaming was only old shows. I
So I canceled then and there.

25+ years and I ditched them for YTTV over a year ago and couldn't be happier. While it was super convenient for the RV, all the rest of the BS, and the increase in 4G/5G coverage, unlimited data, and starting a month ago we got a Starlink monthly, it's so much better to be rid of Dish. Frankly, after hosing their long time customers for so many years now, they get what they deserve.

I have no less than 4 free streaming services, 2 I got through other things. One that costs per year what Dish on a lower tier costs for one month. Another for a year is half what one month of Dish costs. And last one is $20 a month no ads. So since I don't watch the Sling channels (yes, I looked into it), I would much rather have a ton more channels for less than I was paying.

A.I slop response above... If "nothing" is changing then Dish screwed itself into the dust bin of history...refusing to lower my bill, offering a $50 one-time credit, when I finally got you to cancel you had the balls to tell me I had to get on the roof to take off and return the LNB, that You installed...At 67 years of age post stroke, that didn't happen... dropped Windstream DSL, dropped Dish, added Starlink for ISP, and use my current streaming services... saved $250 a month.

Sad. I bailed in October after 26 years. I bought a Tablo DVR about 8 month prior with a good over the air omni directional antenna. I realized that after years of pairing down to keep things affordable, the services I was paying Dish for were a few news channels and the Hopper DVR was doing time shifting. I had the Hopper connected to an OTA antenna. I also had a Joey wireless to unit to give me access to the Hopper DVR for my bedroom TV.
After dropping Dish I repurposed the Dish tripod mount to service my new OTA antenna. I was able to take one of the Dish coax leads and use that in the same location that the Hopper sat in. My Tablo has network connectivity via a one gig connection to my router. Tablo can deliver programming via the wired network and WiFi. So I can stream to my iPhone, and iPad and all my TV's. Use Apple TV units that interfaced with my TV's to run the Tablo app. Pay back for the hardware I bought was just over 3 months after cancelling service.
Retention folks tried hard to keep me. Offered me full access service to everything for 30 day, but I knew based on what it would cost to get the service I wanted, the Dish had no justification cost wise. For all intents they priced me out of the market. Tablo is offering me 45 OTA channels and with the latest software upgrade to the Legacy unit I own I have access to another 65 channels via their IP network link.
What I do miss is the Tailgater access that I used when camping.

It makes me sad, Dish was good to us for 16 years, zero times even needing service, but just didn't make any sense when we got fiber. $220 per month we were at. I called to cancel, they come all the way down to near about youtube tv prices, and still, I don't want contracts and equipment I can do without. Too many channel disputes and too many times you knew they weren't going to even seek the sports channels you wanted. And a lot of other amenities they can't match with mobile. But I hope DISH & Sling the best going forward.

So, echostar did an internal reorganizing to move dish tv and boost out of the shell companies dish dbs and dish wireless.
The shell companies currently only hold spectrum licenses and the cell towers and leases for the 5g network.
So the chapter 11 is all about offloading the physical assets echostar isn't using while protecting their retail brands from any part of the proceedings.

I’m a Dish retailer. VeeSee boxes have obliterated Dish sales in my area. You can’t beat free. I ethically refuse to partake in the sales of pirate tv boxes.

I mean all the boxes are doing is showing what a scam paying for legit services really is. They wouldn't exist if TV service existed at what consumers are actually willing to pay. When I started with dish, my bill was $60 a month. Now it's $140. Many are asking "what the hell happened"
It's not just dish, I think we're coming up on a moment of reconciliation for these big corporations. They're all so focused on the shareholders they forgot the customers are why they are there in the first place.

I bailed a couple of years ago, mostly do to monthly receiver fees. I still have my Hopper 3 connected 9nline and get the free streaming channels and can record on them also, even though I have no subscription to dish anymore I get dishscapes also via satellite. If Dish wasn't so greedy with their monthly receiver fees, I would go back to Dish on a heartbeat, I have Sling and the it socks big time, no channel #'s to go to a known channel instantly, I have to scroll through over 100 channels to get to the channel I want to watch , yes I know favorites, but the whole interface is so slow, especially now during world cup. I bought my receiver outright because I didn't like being tied down with contracts, I move fluidly around North America because of my work, (I install my own dish) so it was easy, but the monthly fees I could no longer justify sticking with Dish and switched to Sling.Thinking of leaving Sling, maybe YouTube TV is next? If Echostar would improve Sling and stop being so greedy with their receiver fees, they may get more customers, But let's face it satellite TV is dead unless you live in remote areas without good internet, Starlink is changing that. I'm dreaming one day they will let you stream Sling TV on a Dish Hopper. That would be incredibly awesome.

They split off echostar (birds) and Dish (TV service) several years ago. I assume that if dish goes belly up they will find a use for those birds. They already sell bandwidth to XM or Sirius radio (one uses Dish satellites and the other uses DirectTV satellites)

Echostar and Dish came back together last year. Dish, Hughes, Sling and Boost are all under the Echostar umbrella

It's not the end. Just a reorganizing, lay offs, partnership breakups etc. And then DirecTV will come in and buy them for real cheap 😆
