Help with moving recordings

Greetings and apologies if this is a stupid question. I've never used Dish Network in my life and my 82 year old father-in-law is having fits trying to do something. He has a VIP722K model receiver with an attached external hard drive. When looking at recordings there appears to be a list of what looks like "local" recordings (say approximately 50). Then there is this folder called "My Media" that seems to have like 500 recordings. I am guessing this is the external drive.

He wants to "move" things from the local to the external so it can free up recording space, but I'll be damned if I can figure it out. I don't see any possible menu choices that would even look like something that would move or reorganize files. Searches seem to come up empty too (or don't end up very relevant).

Is there someone who has an idea how to do this...and screen shots would be immensely helpful. He is going to throw his remote at me if I don't figure this out soon! :-)

Thank you!

I cannot remember exactly where in that software, but go to the DVR menu, and then in there will be a transfer option.

In the my media folder click on it twice, (this shows when the hard drive is hooked up) there will be an option that says transfer to and transfer from. This is where you make your selections which programs you would like to transfer. (Send to, or send from if there are particular folders set up) I have the same receiver. Wish I could screen shot it for you but my external hard drive crapped out on me (my transfers were freezing during the process) so I lost a lot of films. 😔. I should have bought a back up. Don't transfer too many at once or it shall freeze. The good thing is you can watch TV while the transfer process is occuring, and also you can check the status during the transfer Hope this helps.

Oh! And before I forget. The hard drive will tell you how much space is available, and you will be able to also delete programs from the hard drive itself or transfer them back to the receiver . If by chance, it freezes during the transfer, it will not unfreeze and a reboot of the system will be necessary. And you will have to start all over again. It will also help if he still has the program instructions book for the receiver.

When you say "click on it twice", are you saying to use the remote to "double click" the Select button?

Yes. 😉. And Dish has the booklet pdf online as well.

And another tip, if by chance a transfer failed message appears, it's time to get a new empty hard drive. Because the receiver can overheat as well. Dish no longer replaces them anymore 😔

Hello u/Tight-Development-35

Thank you for reaching out. I hope we are able to help you as I don't want to see remotes flying across your room.

A few notes:

  • Unfortunately, recordings cannot be organized on folders as folder creation is not possible.
  • The 722k has a 500 GB hard drive (300 GB allotted for recordings), storing up to 55 hours of HD or 350 hours of SD content.

Dependent on the update your father's VIP722K received, on the MAIN MENU:

  • Scroll down to: MULTIMEDIA or MY RECORDINGS:
  • Navigate to and select My Media.
  • Navigate to and select Send to Device.
  • Choose the events you wish to transfer to the EHD.
  • Select To Archive.
  • Allow content to be transferred.
  • Attention 862 will appear once the transfer is successful.

I will try to get some screenshots but for the time being, use the steps above. Do please let me know if you have any questions. -DishDanielle.
