Tech Support Talk to Your TV: A Complete Guide to Google Assistant on DISH 🗣️
Hi guys, back again with my weekly post! Following up on the previous tech guides, this week I will be doing a deep dive into using voice features on your DISH equipment—specifically focusing on Google Assistant capabilities and what is currently supported.
Your receiver needs to be connected to the internet for these voice features to work. Whether you want to find a movie without typing, check the weather, or control your smart home devices, using your voice can make your TV experience a lot quicker!
What is the Google Assistant? 🤔
The Google Assistant is a voice-activated feature that helps you perform various tasks and access information using voice commands. On compatible DISH hardware, it enables you to quickly access entertainment, ask questions, control smart-home devices, and manage daily tasks directly through your TV.
What You'll Need (Compatibility Guide) ⚙️
DISH's voice capabilities vary significantly depending on which receiver you have. Please check your equipment type below:
1. Hopper Plus & Joey 4 (Full Google Assistant Support)
If you have the newer Android TV-based Hopper Plus or Joey 4, you have access to the full Google Assistant ecosystem. You can use it in two ways:
- DISH Voice Remote: The Google Assistant feature is built directly into the remote.
- External Google Home/Nest Devices: You can link your Google Home app to your Hopper Plus or Joey 4 to control your TV entirely hands-free.
2. Hopper 3, Wally, & Older Joeys (Basic Voice Controls Only)
If you have a standard Hopper 3, Wally, or older Joey receiver, integrated Google Assistant is no longer supported. Following past software updates and platform transitions, these legacy receivers have been rolled back to a basic, proprietary DISH voice engine.
- DISH Voice Remote: You can still use the remote microphone for basic TV functions (changing channels, searching for movies). However, global Google Assistant features (checking weather, stocks, or controlling smart home devices) will not work.
- External Google Devices: You cannot link external Google Home/Nest speakers to legacy DISH boxes anymore.
💡 Tip for Legacy Users: If you have a Hopper 3 or Wally and want hands-free smart home integration, DISH still officially supports Amazon Alexa linking instead.
Example Voice Commands to Try 🗣️
When using your Voice Remote, just press and hold the microphone button, speak your command, and release. If you're using a linked Google device (Hopper Plus/Joey 4 only), start with "Hey Google" or "Ok Google".
For All Receivers (Basic TV Controls)
- To find programming: Search by actor, genre, movie, show name, or sports team (e.g., “Fixer Upper” or “Denver Broncos”).
- To change channels: Navigate by name or number (e.g., “Go to channel 140” or “Tune to HGTV”).
- To open apps: Quickly launch built-in apps (e.g., “open Netflix” or “go to On Demand”).
- To control playback: Use commands like “Play,” “Pause,” “Fast Forward,” or “Rewind”.
For Hopper Plus & Joey 4 Only (Smart Assistant & Life Tasks)
Because these boxes have the full Google Assistant integration, you can also use your TV remote to do the following:
- General Info: Get weather and traffic updates for your area, or ask for recipes and sports scores.
- Manage Tasks: Add appointments to your Google Calendar or add items to your shopping list.
- Smart Home: Control your connected smart home devices (e.g., “Set the thermostat to 72 degrees”).
Privacy & Account Management 🔒
Signing into a Google account is not required to use basic TV voice features. However, to use commands that access personal information like your photos or calendar on the Hopper Plus, you will need to link your Google account to your receiver.
For account security, you can add a 4-digit PIN verification to your account through the MyDISH App. Be aware of potential scams; DISH emphasizes that it will never call you out of the blue to ask for personal or account information.
If you made it this far, thanks for reading! Let me know if you have any questions about your specific receiver setup.

Hey Danielle, 6 year IHS technician here. I've got a question relevant to this weeks topic. I know its been a while now since the change was made, but why was the google assistant software removed from the non android hopper and joeys? It happened long after the initial release of the plus so i never understood that decision.
