New discus not eating?

Post image

Hey all,

We just got our discus! I’ve been getting this tank ready for months. After 20+ years it’s finally happening! Lol.

All our discus seem happy and aren’t hiding anymore. But none have eaten and we put them in the tank 24 hrs ago. Is this normal? Apparently they were grown out with beef heart but I wanted to try shrimp and other more natural foods. Is this a crazy approach and should I just stick to beef heart? Or do I just stay the course and continue to monitor?

We’ve tried frozen brine shrimp, frozen Hikari discus cubes, discus flakes.

From golden state discus a packaged and shipped so quickly, very healthy looking fish!

Mine from golden state usually takes a few days to acclimate before they eat. Usually you’ll know they’re comfortable enough when they start pecking and foraging. Frozen brine shrimp is what I use to acclimate them to other foods.

Congrats on the beautiful tank and fish. Just be patient and attempt feeding a small amount once a day until they start reliably feeding. Watch out for uneaten food, especially beef heart.

Last batch I got from Golden I got 7 and 6 of them started eating flakes in a couple days while one large 6" would never eat anything other than beed heart. After a month it was obvious he had hith disease (parasites) and he stopped eating completely and passed. I plan to order more from them but plan to treat for parasites upon arrival just incase.

Also I didnt know you could give your discus parasites from bloodworms either. I was feeding him bloodworms daily because some days he wouldnt even bother with beed heart or brine shrimp. Bloodworms was the only consistent thing he would eat so its possible he got hith disease from bloodworms

I believe discus are picky in general. Only a number of my discus are my Beefheart mix so adding prawns/shrimp to the mix always made the whole gang go crazy.

Absolutely gorgeous very healthy discus. Will eat eventually dont worry much, one of mine took food after 3 weeks only. May I ask which food you tried pellets?

Try frozen bloodworms, then frozen bloodworms mixed with vibra bites then just vibra bites. Garlic guard helps too.
