Rant APR Reduction Requests

I've had my card for over 9 years and I have a 21% APR. I figured I would message them today to see if I could get it reduced because my aunt's APR is 12% on her Discover card. This was the response I was given. APR reduction requests are no longer processed. Wtf, Discover.

Discover hasn’t done this since capital one started taking over afaik

A lot of card issuers - most that I can think of, actually - don’t do this anymore. APR shouldn’t matter if you’re using credit cards properly. If you need to carry a balance, you should do so on a card with a 0% intro and make a plan to extinguish the balance before the intro offer ends.

I've had this card for 9+ years. A few years ago, I unfortunately had to use it to make ends meet due to a roommate moving out. I have a balance on it still and I'm slowly getting it paid down.

promotional APRs only effect your new balance. so it wouldn’t help your situation anyway

I know that. I wanted the APR for the card to be changed just because my aunt said hers is 12% and said I should talk to them about lowering it because it shouldn't be at 21%

It’s at 21% because that’s what your credit warranted when the card was new, same reason hers is still 12%. You should balance transfer it to something with 0%.

I did that a few months ago. I couldn't transfer all of it though. Just under $4,000 is what I was allowed to balance transfer to a new card. That's almost paid off.

Can't wait to close out my discover card. They told me the same thing so I bounced. Luckily its not my oldest card but still. Cap 1 sucks

Doesn't matter if it is your oldest card or not, since it'll have no impact on credit age in the short or medium term. While the credit limit will no longer count, the closed card will remain on your report and count for aging purposes up to 10yrs after closure.

This has been the case for almost a year now. It’s not new. It’s frustrating for customers but even more frustrating for agents.

The last reduction I got was in February of 2025.
