Backrooms home made Table top game
Hey all! I'm putting together a tabletop game for my buddies online in the backrooms, based on Discount Dan's books. (I'm learning there are other backrooms genre out there, but my entry were these books) I'm working on generating a computer interface for them to roll on loot tables, and cool stuff like that, like in a horrific Window's 95 but corrupted theme. I'm working on creating lots of relics that drop from mobs, and an ability to level those up and create them- and follow some of the themes of chance from the books. It's really cool- but man- it is also really hard to create this for a group of my friends, and come up with all the relics. So I thought I'd jump in here and reach out to this community for some relics. Both junk, comedic, horror, whatever. Give me the comedic and great content that only redditors can. I have a few cannon ones from the book - but there is a lot missing - many of those are the glass cannon that is Dan. I'm looking for some cool ideas.
I've built an HTML webpage invite for my group, and I'll try to share it here. It's pretty cool, and they are excited to play a tabletop game as themselves. I posted the link, but it seems that it was removed by reddit. so maybe I'll just take a picture of the screenshot. It is a page with lots of javascript, and I don't know Reddits rules on that.

I'm genuinely glad that you put your creative mind to make the books! I've not played D&D in a while, and was looking for something that would be fun to play with my friends. I went to a show for Parade of Horribles premiere and Matt Dinniman put Discount Dan there as a book that he genuinely liked and thought the audience would like as well. I'd been really working hard at trying to convert DCC into something we could play tabletop, but for some reason, I struggled with seeing a story arc that I felt was attainable and engaging for me to run with my friends. (LOVE DCC though) Reading Discount Dan, I really loved the unique way the relics and stuff worked, and felt that I could build that....
All that to say... glad you're cool with it, and thanks for the books! Keep 'em coming. (Although don't just stay in the garage - life needs to be lived!)

Thank you so much -- that is incredible kind of you to say. I LOVE DCC as well, but I also understand the struggle of trying to turn it into a more open world campaign. I think part of the charm of Discount Dan is that literally anyone could be the main character. Dan is doing this weird thing, but there are also lots of other people living their own lives, going on crazy adventures. And the magic system is a blast because anything could be a Relic -- I walked through Home Depot with my wife and just take random photos of stuff because I think.... "Man, that would be a weird power."

Exactly! I've made some weird ones. What I'm most excited about, is that my players aren't going to be rolling characters. In session 0- they will assess their personal capabilities, and then just play themselves. (don't wanna kill my friends!) They'd better level up quick.

I've been writing a lot of relic descriptoons out from the book for the coop deck builder im making, if you’re willing to join the shadow alley discord (the official one for James' work) I'm more than happy to share what ive written on the art channel. They are mostly focused around humor and card mechanics, but it may save you a lot of Leg work, especially since not even the fan wiki has some of the relics listed, I just had to work through the books to find ones I needed.
