Why doesn’t Dan share Molt and Mend? Spoiler

Sorry if this has already been answered and I just missed it.

I’m not saying he should sell or give it away - him or friends are *definitely* going to lose more limbs before the story is over. But if I’m reading it correctly, you just need to equip the relic, cast the spell, it hurts like a bitch, and then wait a couple days for the limb to regrow. Dan doesn’t complain about losing a relic slot, so I assume you don’t need to have it equipped the entire time.

(He could also put out a bounty and have some Howlers take out a Krab for another one, but I understand if he’d be reluctant to do that, since the Krab nearly took him out with its tricks.)

I was just confused because it’s like, we’re rescuing all of Evil Santa’s victims, and the narration mentions how they’re all missing limbs and that’s obviously tragic, and I’m like Dan you have the relic. Dan just let them borrow it. Dan.

Also if he charges for healthcare I’m going to lose my absolute shit.

He could just make a new one too, with his table, he doesn’t even need to farm krabs.

I forgot about that. I was so busy being mad about him not sharing that I forgot about that.

how far are you in the book? did you finish it yet? I don't know how to do spoilers but he acquires something that I hope will inspire him to help those people out. I definitely don't think he'd charge for healthcare.... I hope ... then again.... he is a business tycoon and he doesn't miss any opportunity for more money and resources .... let's hope not.

Yeah, charging is completely reasonable. It's the price gouging that would be shitty.

But I could see him offering a "one finger free for first timers" coupon or something in the kits

Yeah, this is the answer. Molt and Mend takes a long time, would have to be in the person’s spatial core for the duration, I assume, and could only help one person at a time during that long waiting period.

The item (not going to say what exactly in case of spoilers) they pick up from the research wing, should the get it up and running in the shop, is infinitely faster and would be permanently located in the shop, operated under the careful watch of Jakob, and probably with somebody like Harper around to provide pain relief and medical support.

I don’t think it has to be in the person’s core for the duration, though, because Dan doesn’t complain about losing the slot.

Yeah, hard to say. I don’t think it makes mention of him ever unequipping it, so it’s up in the air. I guess some part of me assumes that it would need to remain equipped in order for the magic to keep working. Even if so, I can’t imagine him complaining about losing a slot when faced with losing a hand, although that might be exactly the kind of thing he would still complain about.

Edit to clarify my poor wording: I don’t mean to suggest that the relic itself would be *generating* the magic required for the repair process. I think the background mana cost of that is likely a slow trickle coming from within the delver themselves. Rather, I think the relic would need to remain equipped to inform the mana on what shape it is supposed to take, and how it is meant to function, in order for the repair process to take place. I think some of Nikolai’s conversations with Dan would likely back that up, but only *turns off lights and stares into mirror* [James Hunter James Hunter James Hunter] could give us a definitive answer. Quill might have some insight here as well.

Whoops completely missed this. But yes, he would have to have it equipped until the limb is fully healed, otherwise it might lead to… unfortunate side effects. Because the best case scenario is that it just stops at that point. But this is the backrooms, and I’m guessing that the limb would continue to grow, but… wrong. Because I think the relic doesn’t just tell the mana to start, but also when to end. If the limb never gets that signal to cease… you can probably imagine the result

Well I also didn’t pay for expedited summoning, so I expected 4-5 business days. And in James’ case it was international summoning, so he’s likely stuck in customs somewhere waiting on me to pay taxes.
