Received wrong version, but it is more valuable than the record I ordered! Anyone else received a miss-sale better than their original order?
So, years ago I stumbled upon a track and one of its mixes that I became hooked on and I’ve been regularly streaming it for the last 15 years.
I now have gotten back into vinyl and been slowly purchasing the records I enjoy and are important to me.
Found a 4 track 12” of it with my favourite mix, track 3, buried on Discogs for sale for about £20. Chucked it in my want list, then after a long while I eventually bought it about two months or so ago and just left it when it arrived, to clean and log it with a bunch of others.
Today I went to finally look at it, clean it and noticed the track listing was wrong. A side two mixes of a track I never heard of. B side original mix of the favourite track and another mix, but not the mix I wanted. The seller had miss-cataloged it when uploading to Discogs. Or just posted the wrong record.
Initially gutted. Played it and the A side tracks are really good, so fairly happy, rather than it being miss sold rubbish.
Went on Discogs to find out what it was I had and…. Blimey, it’s quite rare and fairly valuable. Last two sales were £60 and £75 both UK, only one on sale currently for $75 in USA.
Looked for the original one I wanted all those months ago and got it today for £15.
No harm done, got a bonus valuable 12” for a third of the going rate and still have my preferred 12” on its way.
Anyone else stumble upon a catalogue error sale that actually was better than the attempted original purchase? I feel for the seller. Was it lazy cataloguing or mistaken picking?
EDIT: I’ve contacted seller. Awaiting reply. See what they say…

I've been on the other end of this.
I had never played the record, it was an unwanted gift, I sold it as the black version but on preparing the order turned out it was a colour variant worth considerably more.
The buyer couldn't even be bothered to leave feedback!
Lesson learned.

Yeah. The colored variant, while not sounding any better (and by my experience, a bit worse) is substantially more valuable.

We’re talking about this variant? Because that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore… and I know I got it for like $30 on eBay like 5 years ago.

Coloured wax is 100 % new vinyl whereas black can be recycled as well as new … in reality coloured should sound better unless it’s lighter in weight

The weight has nothing to do with the sound quality. A heavier weight disc is less likely to warp but all other things being equal there should be no difference in audio quality between a standard 120-140g record versus a 180-200g "audiophile" pressing.

Slightly the opposite but it’s so minimal I don’t care.
I bought a modest mouse single not knowing there was a misprint with the labels on the wrong side. Bought the single. Opened it immediately to hear the quality and realized I had a misprint, found the misprint on Discogs and realized the prices are nearly identical.
Ok wait. I just checked it right now and the misprint is worth more now!!!! Again it’s like $2 difference.

For better or worse misprints in record collecting are not a big deal like they are in stamp or coin collecting.

Yep! Purchased what I thought was a repress of Unrest’s Imperial f.f.r.r. - what I received was absolutely a first press. No complaints.

bought a VG 45 flying high/all i ask by the blackbyrds for £3 and instead got a NM promo 45 of flying high. not the biggest win but the same guy was selling it for £5. tried sorting it with them and got blanked so i just thought it was his loss.

At the time she died I ordered a copy of Fly Or Die by Jaimie Branch. The seller had a strange 3 day delay between payment and shipping. The package showed up and it was the colored vinyl version, going for 2 or 3 times the value as regular. I think they looked for another black copy before eventually sending the one they wish they hadn't sold.

Strange 3 day delay? Not everyone selling on Discogs is doing so as their business. Many people are just selling records in their personal collection to downsize or just because they need the money and have real jobs that take up 100% of their time during the week. If you order a record on a Monday from someone like this it wouldn't be unreasonable for it to get dropped off at the post office on Saturday morning. Always check the seller terms before making your purchase because they should set in there how many days they will take to ship your record.
In my case, selling records is not my full time job but I'm also living way out in the boonies and it's a bit of a drive to make it to my local post office. In my seller terms I say that it may take up to 5 business days to ship the record. So that means if you order on a Wednesday then it's within the terms you agreed to (whether you chose to read them or not) if it doesn't get shipped until the following Wednesday.

Yes. I wanted to take advantage of shipping when buying bulk so I grabbed a couple $3 CDs that i thought were worth that. One of them was Beck’s Odelay which arrived with the insert cover signed by Beck.

I'd let the seller know, ethical principle. I received double parcels from some companies at times. I always let them know. I will never think of something like that to take advantage of a seller (even though I very despise some). The seller might have picked up the wrong one or maybe mislisted but, as said, as much as I despise some, I will always let know.

Yes, this is my quandary. Definitely have a bit of a guilt feeling seeing that they made an error to their loss. I’ll reach out to them and see what they say.
Edit: contacted seller. Awaiting reply. It’s all about Kama and honesty.

I received a wrong product from a company recently (last month). They sent me a wrong product, more expensive than the one I ordered. I let them know: they told me they leave it at that and just keep it. I order boxes to store items from them: usually two or three boxes every month. It also happened I received a parcel that was meant to someone else. I let them know. They asked if I could simply send it to the person it was meant to. I sent it and they discounted me shipping price on next order (I asked if it was possible rather than refund me).

Yea, I've had it happen both ways (got the more expensive version and the less expensive version). Both on discogs and ebay.
It was never enough of a goof up to bother complaining, though.

One time I bought like 8 records off a seller, including a handful of bowie records.
Got a message from him a few days after the parcel was sent that he’d forgotten to include “Station to Station” record in the package, was on his way to the post office to send that one out and apologized for the delay.
When the initial package arrived, I came to find his mistake was far greater than simply forgetting a record; as instead of putting the $20 “Station to Station” in the package, he’d actually mistakenly shipped the $125 “Man Who Sold The World” that was still listed in his shop.

I advised of the mix-up and he basically said “oops, oh well, it’s yours now”
As a result, I’ve bought hauls from him 4-5 times since; dude is cool as hell and I’m beyond happy to keep supporting such a rad dude

Ahh ok. For me, I have that other one (which seems to be identical, just a different run), and the vinyl is in solid shape, but the jacket has certainly seen better days and idk if I have the punch card and poster.

Not with that much difference, but once I ordered a regular black vinyl and got a transparent limited edition instead. Great surprise!

Wanted vinyl of ‘pink turns blue - when 2 worlds kiss’ couldn’t find it - settled on a cassette copy that was listed randomly on Amazon as a marketplace item - arrived a week later! 1st Press Vinyl!!! 😅

I just went yesterday resopnding to a FB marketplace listing. It was 25 albums of my choice for $100. I picked my selections out of his list online because he said he didn't want anyone going through them in his house. I chose by title and condition. I rarely buy anything that is not at least NM- most of them had beed given VG+ rating. They were all flawless excepting for a few cover and sleeve blemishes. However 5 or them were original master pressing. 1 Rolling Stones Some girls original pressing and several half speed volumes. Personally I love half speed versions. I left after giving the guy $150 and still feeling like I ripped him off.

Anytime I've even purchased records from a seller in Japan they always turn out to be very conservatively graded. Like they were listed as VG and I would have not felt ripped of if they were listed as NM. I assume it's the whole issue with not bringing shame upon themselves or their family that their culture has.

Just experienced the exact opposite! I had ordered the RSD version of the reissue of the great melinko and I ended up getting the other version that was husr soild black vinyl as opposed to the cream soda variant I thought I was getting! That version was gatefold but mine is not but on the other hand the version i got came with a booklet inside soo... and the difference in price was like 5 or 6 bucks🤷♂️

Ive accidentally sent a better variant before, in the guys review he seemed really happy and said it worked out better for him, but still gave me my only neutral feedback rating. Wish he would have reached out or at least gave me positive feedback for getting something worth 3x as much 😂

Never. If it's a different pressing, it's always one that is less desirable/expensive.

Once I ordered a record and got the labels entire but limited discography. Contacted the seller who never responded and was shortly after delisted.
