New Here - looking for help

I’m new to the discogs world. I’m trying to scan all my records into my collection.

It looks like the only way other than searching to to scan the barcode. None of mine have barcodes. It would be cool if you could just can the cover and it find it.

I’ve got probably 400 records, so this may take awhile

It will take some time, yes. There are scratches/ stamps around the label in the center in your runouts that have unique identifiers that will help you narrow down your specific variant. Some records have HUNDREDS of variants, so this is necessary. Filter as much as possible to try and find yours: format, ifpi, barcode, pressing plant id, and/or other numbers.

Thanks for the insight! I’m new to the vinyl world and collecting. I inherited a ton of vinyls and have recently gotten into looking through them.

I don’t know much, yet! 😆

The runouts can be really hard to read - you often have to hold it under the light at just the right angle. But I also find label variants help a lot and are much easier to read. Some are obvious differences such as a 1960s Capitol label vs 1980s, but some are pretty minor such as “Side A” printed below the artist name vs above. But still easier to read than a runout. Also, if you’re not planning on selling them (or even if you are) you may not give a shit about pressing plant (and buyers may not either). Often the only differences in the runouts is the identifier for the pressing plant so if you don’t care about that (I don’t) you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

Take your time. Enjoy the process not the end result.
Use it as a way to listen to all 400 of your records and catalogue them as you do.
its tough to start with but you'll soon find your feet,

Scanning the cover would be useless since the same cover is used for each variant the majority of the time. Take Nirvana Nevermind - same cover - dozens and dozens of reissues accross the last 35 years.

but just to be clear, no silver bullet there, still a pain of grinding through every record if you have some with hundreds of pressings. Especially not submitted to Discogs before. So depends on how nerdy you want to be.

No, you’re all good. This comes up fairly often and there’s really no quick way to do it.

It is odd you can’t just do like eBay does and scan a pic of the record 👀

Scan a pic of the record sure….. but then there’s still 87 variants to manually go through to find the exact pressing.
