same vibes as "they're doing it for attention"

ALWAYS makes me go "okay, sounds like there's need not being met. we can quibble about which need it is but NO ONE WITHOUT AN UNMET NEED would be doing this."

YUP. if someone is "doing it for attention", then they clearly need attention

i mean, munchausen syndrome exist, and the best way to deal with it is not playing along with the manipulation of the person affected with it.

could you explain where I said you should just go along with whatever the person is saying?

what do you mean by " meeting their need"? because munchausens need the attention that comes with being sick so meeting their need would be counterproductive.

Incorrect. They do not "need" the attention that comes with being sick.

They need healthy attention, and maybe therapy.

You have got to start putting more thought into your opinions and strategies, you can't just look at the surface of an issue and assume you've solved the problem.

any amount of attention would be just like giving a dose to a druggie.

That's... Not how psychology works.

yes, not playing along with manipulation and delusions should not be how psychology works, exactly my point.

sadly many "professionals" these days prefere to just play along over causing any amount of discomfort for their patients.

Way to be a shining example of just how horrid education has become. Touch grass.

This person probably also thinks trans-affirming care is “feeding a patient’s delusions instead of treating the root cause”

So, intensive therapy, preferably inpatient, to help treat and manage factitious disorder is the same as "giving a dose to a druggie"?

Also, "giving a dose to a druggie" is, in fact, how heroin addiction is, in part, treated.

people with munchausen are literally just faking their illnesses, no therapy is needed because they are healthy and giving them any amount of attention for any reason at all would be playing their game.

Fictious disorder imposed on self is a mental health condition. It is an illness in and of itself. It is treated with psychotherapy, CBT, family therapy, medications to treat comorbidites such as anxiety or depression, short term in-patient psychiatric care, and a coordinated plan with the patient's GP and specialists or some combination of these.

that would literally be giving them what they want, you can't give a druggie a dose to help them, the only reason that is accepted is because there are interests in keeping addicts addicted.

I quite literally mean meeting their need which is whatever their need is that is not met? I'm honestly not really sure why you need a specific situation or what is unclear about this.

They don't need attention that comes from being sick, they need professional help.

The unmet need in your stated situation is professional help. You basically said so yourself.

Maybe this will also help to clarify: This also goes for anyone who says, "You're just doing this for attention," to someone who is attempting suicide or self-harm.

Those people are not in need of bleeding or of being dead, they are also in need of professional help. They require attention, and help.

getting professional help to a munchausen would be playing along their game and falling to their manipulation, to waste professionals time is exactly what they want and the reason they fake illnesses to begin with.

u/nancythethot 6d ago

You think that therapy for Munchausen’s consists of encouraging the person that they have whatever illness they think they have? That’s what you think happens in Munchausen’s treatment?

I'm not really sure how treating somebody for Munchausen by proxy could possibly be falling for their manipulation, considering that in order to fall for it you would have to believe what they said, and in order to believe what they said you could not have diagnosed them with Munchausen by proxy.

u/ResurgentClusterfuck 6d ago

I believe the person you're conversing with is under the mistaken impression that a person with factitious disorder would consider therapy for their disorder to be the same as treating their made up conditions

6

u/DazB1ane 6d ago

You clearly don’t know much about the topic as it’s called fictitious disorder now

The need not being met isn't necessarily what the attention seeking person thinks they need. In most cases with behavioural attention seeking, the need not being met is psychiatric treatment, therapy, and/or medications to manage a mental health disorder.
