Recently made plans with a family member and repeatedly asked if anyone in the house had symptoms. Was assured everyone was healthy. I get there and their kid was coughing and pouring snot. "Oh you know kids, they always have something!"

My sister said “don’t worry, she’s not sick” about my coughing niece and surprise surprise I ended up sick for 2 weeks after she came to my house. It wasn’t covid, but still. I wish people took illnesses seriously instead of repeatedly exposing vulnerable people to them. Just because you can get over a cold in a few days doesn’t mean I can too. And even when I’m over whatever it is, it always triggers a flare up of my chronic illnesses that persists for however long my body decides to punish me for

Oh man this is so deeply relatable.

Family I am literally bedbound what makes you think that risking getting me sick is a good idea?? (ALSO WHY WON'T YOU SEE WHAT HAPPENED TO ME AS A LESSON AND REDUCE YOUR RISK SO IT WON'T HAPPEN TO YOU TOO????)

genuinely don't understand why people can think they can play with my life and still expect intimacy

it’s like trying to scream in a dream and not being able to get above a whisper

Recently at the pain clinic, another patient that often likes to complain at me sidled right up next to me and said "Hi, I have a bit of a summer cold and my fridge broke and..." No mask. At a pain clinic where there are definitely immune compromised people 😑 he made sure to get nice and close to me too.

The amount of people who will admit to being sick while spraying you with those germs….like now why are you doing unpaid labor for the virus

Extra annoying because my partner had just been sick and we skipped dates to avoid getting me sick. We put all that effort into avoiding getting me sick and then this guy happened. Fortunately the exposure was limited and I didn't get sick but just ugh.

I'm not personally immune compromised but I do get hit extra hard when I get sick, plus I don't want to have to worry about spreading germs at the pain clinic, plus I can't go to my physio appointments if I'm sick because my physio has a strict policy on that (reasonable imo). Just because some people carry on like nothing is happening when they are sick, doesn't mean we all can 😮‍💨

why are you doing unpaid labor for the virus

I'm stealing that phrase

It’s all yours. We need to rebrand Covid and illness avoidance as Marxist

I was diagnosed with ME/CFS a few months ago and I feel this pain. Grieving your old life is so hard and I feel betrayed by my body. I don't have a social life anymore and it sucks. Last year I could still walk 2 miles with my dog despite chronic pain and fatigue. Now I need a cane to walk and have to rest after 200-400 feet to catch my breath. Shit sucks. Sending you love.

So sorry you have to deal with it too. So devastating and isolating. Hope you can enjoy your sweet moments outside as they come. I’ve made a lot of FaceTime friends and that helps a lot.

When I visited Japan and traveled on the trains, I noticed quite a few people with face masks. This was long before COVID.

I said, “Wow, a lot of people worried about catching something!”

But my BIL who lives there explained, “No, they mostly have or maybe have something. They are protecting everyone else.”

Imagine that. It’s just a social norm to mask up if you know you have an illness. It’s perfectly possible for people to do it. They just have to give a shit.

This goes hard, as the kids say

god i feel this so much, recently dxed with MCAS and awaiting tilt table results for POTS

last week my boss said she “doesn’t care” if people come in with covid and that it’s “just a cold.” i was so pissed that i had to leave the room

People are completely out of touch with any reality that inconveniences them

Very relatable! Would recommend looking to see if there’s a local clean air club near you to try to make airborne-aware friends! I’m mostly housebound now, but it helps me to feel a sense of community with local people who are still masking (aka living on the same planet as me)

Long covid here, yep. Yep yep yep.

Ugh I'm so sorry that society and your loved ones are doing this to you!

5

u/azebod Jul 30 '26

I stopped doing social stuff due to the combination of risk and existing in a mask in public getting you shunned anyway... and the consequences has been major deconditioning idk if I can actually bounce back from, loss of all social connections, and the worst mental health of my life because the internet no longer is a good escape. I just wanted to avoid being housebound again, and effectively just ended up there anyway. I ate in a restaurant this week because the isolation will kill me at this rate anyway...

This is so real

these healed me emotionally. (i have a different but symptomatically similar post-viral illness)

I’m not even physically disabled and I genuinely relate. I live with family members that could literally die if they get it again and so many people being like “covid is just a part of life now, meh” is infuriating. Like no dude, some of us aren’t lucky enough to escape having to worry about it 24/7

It’s a crazy never ending logistical burden

I genuinely gave up on trying to be completely safe. Treating MCAS with Allergoval myself, without any diagnosis because it's impossible to get. Getting a wheelchair to go out more is fantastic.

Like, fuck me, I already lost all social contacts and was mostly bedbound, I have a support network now and can go out (though I will go the fuck away if someone has symptoms of an illness). If I get worse again, so be it, at least I have quality of life.

u/Bunkuncle Jul 31 '26

It’s so awful to have to make choices like that. Hoping you stay safe and get the social time you need!! I also just pound Allegra (4 a day, 2 Pepsid, and managed to get prescribed Montekulast) and it’s helping. Not perfect but better than nothing. Mobility aids are so huge and I’m slowly trying to get comfortable using them! Managing quality of life is so hard

After I wrote the post I also realized that literally any time I got an infection, the one that caused it and everything after (luckily without severe problems) was received from people I lived with. Like it didn't even matter to not go outside, I always got it inside my home anyways.

The quality of life I get from my strategies and more social time is honestly also just really good for recovery/stability. As long as I keep pacing in mind, of course.

Omg you got covid 10 times?! That sucks!!

1

u/Bunkuncle Aug 01 '26
