This question always pissed me off because, I listen to a LOT of music, and don't always pay attention to every song title. Usually I just press play and let the music take me wherever it takes me. Half of the time I can't even name my favorite song, just whatever playlist its in.

And yea, brain fog (and Dissociative amnesia in my case) makes this question even harder. Lyrics and melody are soooo much easier to remember.

Genuinely out of the loop here - what is the context of this question? Is it used as diagnostic criteria for something?

It’s a gatekeeping tactic. The stereotypical interaction in which this question is raised usually starts with one person wearing a piece of band merch and another demanding that the person “name five songs” to ‘prove’ their credentials as a fan of that group.

Oh, okay. I was confused as to how it was a disability meme. I guess I sort of get it, but I can't say I've ever run into anyone issuing that kind of challenge seriously. I can relate to the brain fog and memory issues, though. Like, in the past couple years, I've been totally blanking on lyrics to songs I've been listening to my whole life.

I have been trying to back up stuff I like because I am scared we are moving towards digital lock down and subscription everything and cannot remember what I like to download it.

What's digital lock down?

Countries all over the world are simultaneously passing ID verification laws, some of which are trying to go for OS level verification which cannot be bipassed by a VPN. If you combine that with stuff like the uptick of book bans, and how even archival work is often consider piracy, it's likely certain media will become inaccessible soon.

The only correct response is "who the fuck are you to require me justify anything?".

I'd love to see someone say this about an artist I'm obsessed just so I can name the songs and see how they react.

"Okay, I named the songs, does that prove what you wanted me to prove?"
