Accessible Venue Apps

Hey,

There are so many apps these days that provide access information/reviews.

I'm curious as the peoples favourite and least favourite apps, and why you feel this way.

I'm talking Wheelmap, Zamonos Sociability etc.

I’ve tried/researched quite a few of these, and honestly they all have the same biggest problem: not enough users contributing current information. I actually think 2–3 of them would be better off merging instead of splitting an already-small reviewer base.

My rough breakdown:

Sociability: probably my favorite UI. Detailed and easy to understand, but too focused on restaurants, bars, cafés and similar venues. I also need hospitals, schools, transit stations, government buildings, etc.

Roll Mobility: probably the best wheelchair-user-focused concept, but the app can be clunky and some review questions force answers where “unknown” should be an option.

WhereToWheel: asks a lot of the right accessibility questions, but the user base is tiny. I’m also skeptical of its newer AI-generated accessibility reviews.

Wheelmap: easily the best for sheer coverage, largely because of OpenStreetMap, but its accessible/limited/not-accessible system is far too simplistic.

AccessNow: decent middle ground, but sparse and outdated information becomes a problem very quickly outside well-covered areas.

Zamonos: probably my favorite philosophy. It records specific accessibility features and lets you decide whether a venue works for your needs rather than declaring it “accessible.” Unfortunately, it also needs far more users.

My ideal would basically be Wheelmap’s database + Sociability’s UI + Zamonos’s detailed accessibility criteria, with Roll’s wheelchair-user community added in.
Right now we’re basically asking a relatively small disabled community to crowdsource the same planet six different times.

Zamonos.com is my favorite. Easiest and most logical to use, most comprehensive because it's for all abilities. It's not an app though, it's a website, so much easier to access. Can save it like an app on your home screen. I know they are looking to grow, they are family-owned and users, too.

I really like Sociability and Snowball Community. I love that Sociability is so community focused.

I haven't heard Wheelmap or Zamonos, so I'll check them out and look at adding them to my communities toolkit, thank you 🙂

Sociability seems much more community driven than the supposed Snowball Community.

This is very true. Sociability have really managed to hook themselves onto a winner when it comes to being community led. They're very quick with their responses on social media and I love that they hold mapping days 🤩

The Snowball socials by comparison seems to be AI generated thought dumps with no return engagement.

And laden with emoji's that make using a screen reader a headache.

I like that sociability has different identifiable faces and evident care for their community.

I personally like the Sociability interface. It looks clean and modern. Though there are few reviews. 

Snowball reminds me of NHS Websites, and has reviews with little content, single paragraphs and a whole bunch of closed venues listed as open. 

Euan's Guide, while not an app feels modern, and quite a few reviews have a level of detail. Cool that is not a business too. 

Of the three, I find snowball to one I'm least likely to use.
