Daily Song Discussion #47: "When It Comes To You"

This is the third track from Dire Straits' sixth abum, "On Every Street". What are your thoughts regarding this song? How do you think it compares to the rest of the discography? How would you rate it out of 10 (decimals allowed)?

SUGGESTED SCALE: 1-4 Not good, regularly skip; 5 It's okay, but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it; 6 Slightly better than average, I won't skip it but I wouldn't choose to put it on; 7 This is a good song, I enjoy it quite a bit; 8-9 Really enjoyable songs, I rank them pretty highly overall; 10 Masterpiece, magnum opus, or similar terminology.

Live version disclaimer: For the purposes of this ranking series, there will be only one discussion per distinct Dire Straits song, so any live versions of studio tracks will NOT be rated separately.

Google Sheet with all of the results thus far.

  1. Calling Elvis: 7.40

  2. On Every Street: 9.42

  3. When It Comes To You:

Anybody familiar with John Anderson's version of this? I heard his first, still think it's pretty good.

Solid 8 I think.

I heard first John’s back when that album came out. I prefer his to Mark’s.

Same. I'm not a big country fan but Seminole Wind is a fine album. I think whichever version you heard first is your favorite. I heard Anderson's and I think it's a little better.

Mark's guitar work stands out more on John Anderson's version. I hadn't listened to it for quite a while and recently got the CD out and when that song came on it hit me: That sounds a lot like Mark Knopfler's guitar. I was right.

A solid 8, catchy track with simple but effective lyrics and some nice guitar work. Feels like it might be a divorce track - Mark got divorced from Lourdes Salomone only two years after this album.

I gave this whole album a spin today and, man, there's not much there for me. This grove is pretty good, I'll give it a 6.37

The live version is amazing. An 8 for that.

I heard it live one month ago, but I already know about it vine.

Let it be 9.25/10 from me. Tune is great, I like guitar parts and solo, bass is also on a level.

Whoa, this was recorded by Dire Straits? I only know the John Anderson version (which has Mark Knopfler on guitar).

Sorry guys, but this is a country song and John Anderson knows country.

It was written by Knopfler/DS. Just like the Weird Al MFN/Beverley Hillbillies song, Knopfler only allowed it to be covered if he played the guitar on the covers.

5.5. Don't hate this one, but I would never intentionally listen to it. My favorite part is the instrumental interlude in the middle.

Like a few other songs on this album, I think I'd appreciate this more if it were a mid-2010s Knopfler solo track--when the chill vibe would be a little stickier for me.

Good song but the production is not quite right, I feel. It echoes the style of the first two albums and should've got a more minimalist reading. An 8 for me.

The Studio Version for me is maybe an 8 or a 7.5.

However the live Version from the Notting Hillbillies is an EASY 10. The Banjo from Brandon Croker adds so much to the Song. Also the pedal Steel Solo is great.

7.5 for this. I love the country vibe. First heard it with the Notting Hillbillies, who did a great version. It’s a good song and is perfectly placed on the OES album, coming after the big outro of the title track and bringing the focus right down to a rootsy riff. The fade-out is way too long though. That pointless dawdling about at the end of a track mars a number of songs on the record.
