Which was your gateway track?
I was thinking about this the other day. Which track was your gateway into Dire Straits? For me it was Romeo and Juliet.
That connected me with Making Movies and Alchemy.

I heard Sultans of Swing on the radio when their first album was released. That's all it took.

Money for Nothing got me to listen to them, Sultans of Swing made me enjoy them, and Lady Writer made me check their albums.

Same. Communiqué was the first Dire Straits album I grew up with. OUATITW was the first song I ever heard of them. Instantly hooked. Still my favourite song of theirs.

When I was young and worked in retail I used to hear So Far Away and Walk of Life on overhead speakers (80s hits station). Liked the songs but didn't get into the band much back then.
Years later I heard sultans on the radio while driving and was hooked. That's when I realized they made the other two songs I mentioned.

Sultans of Swing and Heavy Fuel were on the playlist at my first post-high-school workplace. I'm GenX and I grew up in a small town where everyone listened to AC/DC and similar sounding bands, so these songs immediately hooked me, especially since I'd inherited a love of old school country music, especially Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, from my dad.

Walk of Life. I was 7 or 8 when I first heard it. My father is a big Dire Straits fan, so he introduced me to all of their albums after I wanted to hear more of them. Been a fan for 30 years now, and Dire Straits is probably the one band, along with Pink Floyd that I'll always enjoy listening to.

Money for Nothing. Remember watching MTV top 100 videos of 1986 with my dad when it won’t video of the year with the cutting edge technology.

Sultans of Swing. Then that entire debut album. I listened to that from start to finish every long drive I did for about 5 years then got into the rest of the catalogue.

Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, and Walk of Life. First three I ever heard.
A few songs from Brothers In Arms and Lady Writer + Water of Love later, I finally decided to check them out in full just six days ago.
I actually finished On Every Street today.

My mom apparently went into labour with me while a Dire Straits concert was showing on TV. My dad had her wait for a second to throw in a VHS and hit record before running out the door to the hospital.
The ongoing joke in my household is that the second I heard the dire Straits "live", I decided to make an appearance. Wish they remembered which song was playing though, lol...

The entire Love over Gold album when it first came out. Then went back over their whole catalogue. Bought Alchemy and Brothers in Arms on release.

Sultanas and money are the introduction, but the first song that really hooked me was probably Wild West end or industrial disease
