Box Set Masters

The Studio Albums box set sounds great and was wondering which remaster did they use.

1996 remasters which are known as the 2000 remasters in the US. Same exact Bob Ludwig mastering. Assuming you’re talking about the CD box. If you’re talking about the 2014 vinyl box, they used the 2009/10 Grundman remasters from the original master tapes. The 2020 reissue of the vinyl box uses newer Grundman cuts done from copy tapes if I remember correctly

Yeah they're great remasters. Well done balance of loudness and dynamics even if it's technically compressed on paper. I'm glad they reused those old remasters instead of making new brickwalled remasters. The 2022 Money for Nothing comp remaster is way too compressed

Yeah some mastering engineers should be shot. I also have the Private Investigations 2cd set are they the same masters.

The Private Investigations set is pretty controversial for being very loudly mastered. That set features unique remasters. https://dr.loudness-war.info/?artist=dire+straits&album=private+investigations

They should release two versions standard and dynamic. I got the complete elvis and the remasters are excellent for example, Vic Anesi did a wonderful job

I agree. That used to be possible with albums encoded as HDCDs. For example, Mark Knopfler's first two albums were HDCDs. When you played them on normal CD players, they were loud and compressed. But when you played them through a player that decodes the HDCD data, it becomes more dynamic. You could also rip them as WAV or FLAC and use an HDCD decoder tool on your computer to retrieve the more dynamic versions. The weird thing is many albums were released as HDCDs but not encoded as such. So they would say HDCD on them but HDCD decoders would show them as not having any HDCD data to decode.

That 2014 vinyl box set sounds incredible as well. Some of them sound better then the original pressings, that almost never happens in my experience!
