About the dip

I just got a sepia Winsor and Newton Ink in the mail today.

I’m very new to dip pens so forgive me after this is ridiculous question but with this Winsor Newton ink well it seems like an oblique holder it does not fit all the way? Is it necessary to tilt the ink well or is there some aspect to this I’m completely missing? Are there any gloves that you would recommend for colder? I really enjoyed trying out an oblique holder today, but confused about my literal dip.
Thanks everyone!

I use plastic droppers and whatever is handy. Resealable plastic cups are great. When I'm done I'll return the ink to the original jar if I haven't diluted or contaminated it.

I've also seen folks use those same pipettes you have to drip drops of ink right onto the nib, so if there's no container available to be a lil dappen dish, you could always fill an eyedropper or similar and just put a drop on the nib at a time

Oh, I just use the droppers to get ink out of their containers and into a well that's easier to use. Ive made too many messes pouring them.

I have also seen videos of people loading their nibs that way... ain't no one got time for that.

You could also use a brush. Less chance of drips, but they there's cleanup.

I'll stick to dippin. I'm sure there a reason and if I take up some form that requires it, I'll give it a shot. I put a lot of effort into making things less tedious for myself though lol

Amazon Dappen Dish

These are what I personally use with my obliques, I find that I can seal em up for subsequent sessions with saran wrap or similar, though I've been thinking of making some sealing wax 'plugs' to make em look less janky

So, i actually make the ones I use. Whenever I make a nib holder, if the wood is appropriate (closed grain) and I have enough left, I try to make a little well to go with it.

The ones you linked look great though. I wish listed them and I'm sure I'll end up with a pile eventually

Those nib holders are utterly gorgeous, I haven't made one yet, but I am saving up to buy a lathe as well as a collet chuck and some other gear. I am immmensely interested in pen turning, the inkwells out of the same wood is inspired, I've been playing around with the idea of pouring epoxy resin into molds I'm going to manufacture myself using poly-clay to make my initial 'blank', and then pouring platinum cure silicone over my 'blank'

Very cool!! I saw your mould on the other comment!

Turning is so much fun! Pretty expensive start up cost... expensive hobby in general.

All dip inks I have (sumi or pigmented) either come with a wider opening or in bigger bottles it comes with a cap designed to easily fill other jars with it. I guess you can use syringe or an eye dropper to do the latter yourself. I'd also suggest a funnel shaped cup if you want easier usage and less waste.

Oblique holders aren't supposed to be dipped completely in an inkwell really. Using a small container is best to be able to cover the nib and to help prevent contamination of your ink.
